The text would be of particular interest to engineering students—it is about their profession—as well as of interest to people in the field of the history of technology. The main strength of the work is its sometimes novel choice of topics. Its occasional weakness is the failure of some important subjects to appear. Historians of technology will recognize some familiar names in the list of essayists. Merritt Roe Smith writes about Eli Whitney’s role in the American system of manufacturing and demolishes the notion that Whitney pioneered manufacturing with interchangeable parts. Thomas Parke Hughes writes on Thomas Edison, and Ruth Schwartz Cowan on Ellen Swallow Richards, in 1870, the first woman to graduate from MIT and the driving force behind the establishment of the discipline of home economics.

DWF involves fishing activities conducted in waters beyond Taiwan’s territorial limits, and it is crucial to ensure fair and ethical treatment of the fishermen involved. The analysis of fisherman exploitation entails a comprehensive examination of various factors contributing to labor abuses. This includes investigating working conditions, working hours, payment practices, living conditions aboard fishing vessels, and overall treatment of the fishermen. Evaluating whether these practices comply with local and international labor standards, human rights principles, and relevant regulations is essential. Human action recognition (HAR) involves the use of computer vision algorithms to automatically identify and classify actions being performed by humans in videos or images. HAR technology can analyze footage from DWF vessels and identify actions indicating labor exploitation or abuse. It is essential to address the issue of exploitation and abuse in Taiwan’s DWF industry \u0000<xref>[1]</xref>\u0000, \u0000<xref>[2]</xref>\u0000. Lewis et al. \u0000<xref>[16]</xref>\u0000 explored using “AI” and face recognition as both a speech act and a technological tool for monitoring workers or intimidating migrants and protesters. While this concept has been implemented in various systems, our primary focus is developing a system to detect and address long work-hour exploitation.

An often-cited example is that of textile workers (referred to as Luddites) who rebelled against the machines that threatened their livelihoods as their artisans’ skilled labor was being replaced with less skilled machine workers \u0000<xref>[1]</xref>\u0000. On the other hand, a positive impact of that technology was that the machine workers could do the work with higher efficiency.
