These networks function on the communication between vehicles, traffic infrastructure, and people. One of the major challenges of VSNs is to deal with heterogeneous traffic due to the diverse nature of information and data generated by different types of sensors and devices within the vehicular environment. To ensure an effective operation of the network, it is crucial to offer a differentiated quality of service to each traffic class. Media access control (MAC) protocols offer an opportunity to provide differentiated channel access to the traffic of different priorities. This work is focused on offering comparison of recent MAC schemes in terms of their performance for heterogeneous traffic generated by VSNs. Two protocols FROG-MAC and UrgMAC have been selected: FROG-MAC is developed using a simple concept of packet fragmentation, where the packets of lower priority are fragmented to offer an early transmission opportunity to urgent traffic; on the other hand, urgMAC is designed using advanced cross-layer techniques of two-tiered service differentiation mechanism, adaptive data rate adjustment mechanism, urgency-based contention window size adaptation, traffic type adaptive duty cycle, and multimedia message passing. It has been found that the FROG-MAC outperforms urgMAC in terms of delay, energy consumption and packet delivery ratio.</p>","PeriodicalId":55001,"journal":{"name":"IET Communications","volume":"18 20","pages":"1753-1764"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1049/cmu2.12861","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142860859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Suppose interference is suppressed by obtaining information about all interfering channels, although the spectral efficiency of the system is greatly improved. In that case, the communication overhead between APs is too huge and consumes too many resources for coordinated transmission, and the performance improvement obtained is negligible. Based on this, a new deep learning hybrid precoding technique based on local channel information is proposed in this paper, where APs use local channel state information for direct hybrid precoding, which can effectively suppress inter-AP interference in dense wireless local area network and improve the reachable rate of the system through the characteristics of deep learning networks. Through multi-AP system-level simulations, it is demonstrated that this non-collaborative hybrid precoding method based on deep learning greatly suppresses interference and effectively improves the spectral efficiency of the system.</p>","PeriodicalId":55001,"journal":{"name":"IET Communications","volume":"18 20","pages":"1716-1727"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1049/cmu2.12847","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142860456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Subject to the battery capacity constraint of UAVs, the formulated AoI minimization problem is non-convex due to discrete variables such as the selected hovering points and continuous variables such as the transmit power of SNs. With geographic locations of HAPs, the WPCN is divided into three areas, and propose an AoI-based clustering algorithm to cluster islands for UAVs to traverse subject to the battery capacity constraint. As data freshness depends on the flight distance and hovering duration of the UAV, the <span>f</span>light distance and <span>h</span>overing duration-based <span>s</span>electing <span>h</span>overing <span>p</span>oints (FHSHP) algorithm is proposed to define the candidate area, where the UAV chooses among candidate hovering points to minimize AoI. The FHSHP algorithm narrows the range of candidate hovering points to choose from, and achieves better tradeoff between the flight distance and the hovering duration of the UAV. Numerical results verify the superiority of the proposed FHSHP algorithm compared with comparison algorithms, and show the impacts of network parameters on the average AoI.</p>","PeriodicalId":55001,"journal":{"name":"IET Communications","volume":"18 19","pages":"1650-1663"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1049/cmu2.12860","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142759865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The scheme has been validated in simulations. The work is continued by evaluating the scheme on real-world software defined radio (SDR) equipment. Experiments immediately showed that a demodulation is impossible as the received signal is highly distorted. This comes from the fact that adding symbols at transmission actually generates high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) preventing proper waveform generation by the equipment's hardware. This paper presents a PAPR correction scheme that modifies the waveform. The properties of this modified waveform are analysed and the performances are assessed in simulations with realistic time and frequency synchronization assumption. For the ideal 0 dB PAPR corrected output, the SER performances are close to that of a legacy LoRa communication, while preserving the physical layer security capabilities of the self-jamming scheme. It is finally shown that our PAPR correction scheme effectively recovers the self-jamming properties on SDR devices.</p>","PeriodicalId":55001,"journal":{"name":"IET Communications","volume":"18 19","pages":"1588-1603"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1049/cmu2.12854","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142762109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To tackle the challenges of limited terrestrial communication resources and device energy in FL, a UAV-assisted federated learning and energy collection resource optimization algorithm is proposed. This algorithm harvests the working energy of FL terminals from radio frequency signals transmitted by the UAV via wireless energy collection. Considering energy causality and limited resources, we formulate a problem aimed at minimizing the completion time of FL training tasks. As this problem is NP-hard, we initially employ a greedy algorithm to optimize the UAV's position, then decompose it into three sub-problems: computing resources, power control, and bandwidth allocation. We derive and establish the optimization objective function for computing resources as convex, obtaining the expression for optimal computing resources. The Brent algorithm, based on golden section interpolation, iteratively solves the power distribution sub-problem, while the Lagrange-quasi-Newton algorithm optimizes bandwidth allocation for each user. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm effectively reduces training completion time while maintaining training quality.</p>","PeriodicalId":55001,"journal":{"name":"IET Communications","volume":"18 19","pages":"1621-1631"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1049/cmu2.12857","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142759863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this system, part of subcarriers is assigned to the chaotic reference so that it can carry extra data bits through carrier index modulation, while one of the remaining subcarriers is activated to transmit the data-bearing signal. In addition, M-ary DCSK modulation is also applied to data-bearing signals based on the constellation theory and Walsh codes. Theoretical bit error rate expressions are derived over the multipath Rayleigh fading and additive white Gaussian noise channels. To this end, a simple closed-form analytical expression is derived for the resulting block-error probability (BLEP) under Nakagami-<span></span><math>\u0000 <semantics>\u0000 <mi>m</mi>\u0000 <annotation>$m$</annotation>\u0000 </semantics></math> fading with in general unequal fading parameters for the desired and the jamming link. As a by-product, a novel expression for the corresponding probability of a capacity outage is obtained. An asymptotic analysis and numerical evaluation of the BLEP expression show that in the single-antenna case the jammer will indeed be successful in corrupting the wireless link, unless there is a rather high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) advantage for the desired link. This even holds true, when signal fading for the jamming link is significantly more severe than for the desired link. Finally, the case of multiple antennas is considered and the benefits of array processing and diversity reception at the desired receiver are explored. It is found that receive array processing can significantly improve the resulting BLEP, provided that the desired link is characterized by favorable fading conditions. On the other hand, diversity reception can significantly improve the BLEP, if the desired link has favorable SNR conditions.</p>","PeriodicalId":55001,"journal":{"name":"IET Communications","volume":"18 19","pages":"1632-1641"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1049/cmu2.12858","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142762184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, a novel simultaneous transmission and reflection RIS (STAR-RIS) technology is introduced which enables more degrees-of-freedom in simultaneously serving users in reflection and transmission regions of RIS. This paper investigates a STAR-RIS assisted two-user full-duplex communication system, wherein multi-antenna base station (BS) and single-antenna users are subject to maximum power constraints. Firstly, weighted sum rates are computed for three well-known STAR-RIS protocols, e.g. energy splitting, mode selection, and time splitting. Then, for each of the cases, weighted sum rate optimization problem is investigated to find optimal resource allocations, i.e. base station's precoding and combining matrices, coefficients of STAR-RIS, and power allocations. The optimization problem is transferred into multiple convex sub-problems using equivalent weighted minimum mean-square-error forms. Also, by use of the successive convex approximation method, tunable parameters of the STAR-RIS are optimized. Although the original problem is a non-convex one, proposed iterative alternating technique achieves an acceptable sub-optimal performance. Finally, performance of the system is analysed and compared to some baselines to highlight superiority of the STAR-RIS compared to the conventional RIS schemes.</p>","PeriodicalId":55001,"journal":{"name":"IET Communications","volume":"18 20","pages":"1967-1982"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1049/cmu2.12855","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142860143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are various approaches suggested for its analysis and implementation via simulations but testing in real-time environments is not heavily investigated. This paper carries out the real-time implementation of the GFDM system utilizing software-defined radio (SDR) by emphasizing mainly channel estimation and synchronization. Symbol timing, frequency offset, and channel estimate algorithms are applied using a windowed preamble with two identical halves to satisfy low egress noise requirements. Time and frequency estimation is evaluated in terms of residual offsets along with symbol error rate over frequency selective channels. This algorithm is extended to a preamble composed of multiple identical parts. This facilitates a large frequency estimation range at the cost of complexity.
