Methods Surveys were undertaken at all locations from where the species has been known and counts made of individual-equivalents (occupied 1 m grid cells). Light loggers were used to measure the light regime across a full annual cycle at a control site and at colonies of the liverwort within deciduous woodland and heathland habitat, from which percentage shade was calculated. Key results and conclusions The species was refound at all eight locations at which it has been known previously. A total of 157 individual-equivalents were found and it is estimated that the real total is 189–300 individual-equivalents, with the largest populations at Bonython (64 individual-equivalents counted; 41%) and Poltesco (44 individual-equivalents counted; 28%). High illuminance (> 10,000 lux) was recorded commonly at the control site (29.5% of measurements; n = 52,560), rarely in heathland (2.6–6.6%) and never in deciduous woodland. Compared with heathland, shade in deciduous woodland is higher (annual mean = 78.4–91.1% vs 98.4–98.5%) and more consistent throughout the year. Here we present our arguments for recognising this moss as a new species. Methods The morphology of the new taxon was compared with that of the species of Aloina presently recognised. In addition, most of the type material of the taxa attributed to this genus in the world has been studied. Key results and conclusions Aloina scindulosa M.J.Cano, J.A.Jiménez & M.T.Gallego is described and illustrated as a new moss species from four localities in the Monte Desert area of Argentina. It is distinct from all other members of the genus in the combination of its lingulate leaves with unbordered margins, rectangular and slightly sheathing leaf bases, leaves ending in a long, hyaline, papillose hair-point near the leaf apex, the costa scarcely differentiated, in cross-section with no stereids, and the upper and middle laminal cells and costal surface dorsally prorate in the upper midleaf. Possible confusion with other species of the genus is discussed. The aim of this study was to investigate the value of such records as evidence of change in the condition of protected areas. Methods The study area comprised Epping Forest, UK, where basic bryophyte recording has been undertaken ad hoc since ca 1800 and was again carried out in January 2022. A total of 224 species were included within the analysis, each categorised as either having been found during the surveys in January 2022 or only found during previous recording. Ellenberg indicator values for each species were derived from published literature. To investigate if any of the Ellenberg indicators were significant predictors of whether or not a species was found during the January 2022 surveys, a binomial generalised linear model was constructed (model 1). A second similar model was produced that excluded epiphytes (model 2). Results Regarding the likelihood of a species having been found during January 2022, model 1 indicated that there were highly significant negative relationships with moisture and acidity, and a highly significant positive relationship with nitrogen. Model 2 provided similar results except that moisture was insignificant. Conclusions Basic bryophyte records indicated that the condition of Epping Forest has undergone significant change, to become a site that is less acidic and more nutrient rich. Here, we re-examine and provide taxonomic notes on five species of Marchantiaceae in China. Methods Morphological examination was conducted by using dissecting and optical microscopes. Key results Marchantia convoluta was found to be conspecific with M. papillata subsp. grossibarba. Marchantia hartlessiana and M. polymorpha subsp. montivagans are, respectively, added to and excluded from the bryoflora of China. It was based on Ulota bellii, a species described by Nikolajs Malta for which only two previous collections were known. Despite this sample size limitation, Malta simultaneously published two varieties, each based on one of the two specimens: the type variety and U. bellii var. longicolla. Methods Specimens from 80 localities between 0 and 1430 m a.s.l. from both the North and South Islands of New Zealand were studied. Type material of both varieties of Ulota bellii was included in the study, and the ecological affinities of Rehubryum bellii were analysed. Key results and conclusions Morphometric analysis supports the conclusion that our recent collections correspond to the original concept of Ulota bellii, now combined as Rehubryum bellii. Additionally, var. longicolla is synonymised with the type variety based on a lack of morphological differences. Rehubryum bellii is described in detail and illustrated, and its distribution and ecological affinities are discussed. Rehubryum bellii presents a set of morphological diagnostic characters: leaves with a submarginal band of elongate cells, papillose-denticulate margins in the base–lamina transition, and an endostome with 16 segments. Similarities and differences between Rehubryum and Atlantichella, the sister genus from the northern hemisphere, as well as the distinction from Australasian species of Orthotrichaceae, are discussed. Pseudanomodon attenuatus, previously known as Anomodon attenuatus Hedw., is very rare in Britain. In this study, its population status and ecology in England were investigated. Methods. Located along the River Eden, Cumbria, the three previously known sites for the species in England were surveyed, plus three potential sites along the river. Abundance was evaluated in terms of ‘individual-equivalents’, each defined as an occupied 1 m grid cell, when the moss was growing on rock, or an occupied tree, when it was epiphytic. Geographical coordinates of each individual-equivalent were recorded with a GPS unit. Habitat and community composition were recorded by relevés. Results and conclusions. The species was found at each previously known site and a new site. A total of 127 individual-equivalents were found, and the actual total along the 10.4 km of riverbank surveyed was estimated to be 140–200 individual-equivalents. Along the whole River Eden may be as many as 250–1000 individual-equivalents, because significant amounts of potential habitat remain unsurveyed. The population is confined to the middle to upper inundation zone of the riverbank. About half of individual-equivalents occur on trees and about half on calcareous sandstone. Most trees are Alnus glutinosa; others include Acer pseudoplatanus, Betula pendula, Corylus avellana, Fraxinus excelsior, Quercus robur and Ulmus glabra. Common associates are Anomodon viticulosus, Didymodon insulanus, Homalia trichomanoides and Thamnobryum alopecurum. Edmund August Friedrich Russow was the sole author of three Sphagnum species and coauthor or author of the basionym for four others, three of which have been lectotypified. Russow described S. warnstorfii in 1888 but did not assign a type specimen in the protologue. However, he listed several locations where he had gathered the species. Material and typification. Various herbaria were searched for original material of Sphagnum warnstorfii that had been collected, identified and labelled by Russow prior to his compiling of the protologue for the species. Five specimens were found, which had been collected in 1887 at the localities mentioned in the protologue and labelled by Russow’s hand as ‘S. Warnstorfii m.’. A specimen collected from Techelfer (TU173562a) is designated as the lectotype because it is the only .one that bears the original signature of Russow. The extent and causes of variation in sporophyte production among British dioicous liverworts are assessed. Methods. Reproductive attributes of dioicous species are taken from Paton’s The Liverwort Flora of the British Isles (1999). The extent to which sporophyte production is potentially restricted by low levels of sex expression, unbalanced phenotypic sex ratios, and probable spatial segregation of the sexes, is quantified. Patterns of variation in sexual reproduction are also characterised for species associated with different biogeographical zones in Europe. Results. Of the 188 British liverwort species that are dioicous (62%), sporophytes are unknown in 65, rare in 58, occasional in 50 and frequent in 15. Some species are not or rarely sexually reproductive, but major causes of restricted sexual reproduction are sexual imbalance and probable isolation of the sexes. Among species with skewed sex ratios, female bias is substantially more common than male bias. Sporophyte frequency is relatively high among species widely distributed in temperate and boreal Europe, compared with taxa associated with other climatic zones, including the oceanic fringe. Conclusions. Restricted sporophyte production implies that asexual reproduction and clonal longevity are critical for the persistence of many liverworts. Initial morphometric investigations into the differences between Leucobryum glaucum (Hedw.) Ångstr. and L. juniperoideum (Brid.) Müll.Hal. in Britain showed that some populations could not be clearly assigned to either species. An intensive morphological and molecular study was therefore undertaken to understand the diagnostic characters of the European species of the genus, including L. albidum (Brid. ex P.Beauv.) Lindb., whose reported presence in Europe was surrounded by uncertainty. There has been little agreement among previous authors on the relative taxonomic importance of the different morphological characters, or on their metrics. Methods. Molecular sequencing using nuclear and chloroplast markers, in conjunction with previously accessioned data, allowed judgement of the taxonomic importance of various methods for morphological discrimination. These methods included both existing published techniques and newly discovered diagnostic characters. This integrated process was cyclical, the morphological analysis being directed and confirmed by the sequencing of selected specimens. Results and discussion. Data are presented demonstrating the correlation between molecular identification and certain morphological characters in the three European species of Leucobryum. Leucobryum albidum is confirmed as a locally frequent member of the British flora and it is also shown to be present in Ireland and western part of continental Europe. Leucocyst pore morphology is described and its value as a diagnostic character is discussed. An identification key is provided for the three species.
