Retrofitting the existing surface water drainage systems using SuDS technologies can improve the living conditions of the refugees by addressing environmental challenges such as flooding, erosion and outbreak of water-related diseases across the camps. In this paper, evaluation of pollutant removal and hydraulic performance of laboratory experimental set-up of SuDS technologies mimicking stormwater management conditions for African IDP and refugee camps is presented. Two rigs of engineered wetlands and two rigs of filter drains (FDs) constructed using locally sourced low-cost sustainable materials were evaluated for stormwater attenuation and pollutants removal efficacies. The results showed that both the engineered wetland systems and FDs for simulated refugee camp conditions showed a significant reduction in the organic loading levels for chemical oxygen demand, biochemical/biological oxygen demand and turbidity and nutrients present in the stormwater. In addition, the engineered wetlands and FDs are effective in attenuating significant proportion of precipitation.","PeriodicalId":54571,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Municipal Engineer","volume":"256 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2018-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75849732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the LGA, the country currently has a £12 billion backlog of repairs, and one in five roads is classed as being in poor condition, so something has to give, and why should it always be the road user? But what advantage does the lane rental model have over permits? And how easy will it be for councils to follow early adopters Kent County Council and Transport for London and dramatically cut disruption? Jonathan Williams, Product Consultant of Yotta, UK, believes lane rental is a great idea, but not necessarily the easy option. Success, Williams says, lies in the execution. So what do councils need to think about to get it right? This article takes a look at the key challenges roadworks pose and looks in detail at the viability of ...","PeriodicalId":54571,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Municipal Engineer","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2017-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87861129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates the impact a hypothetical tramline would have in Bristol. This study was conducted in light of proposals for a bus rapid transit (BRT) network in Bristol. The literature review undertaken concludes that while BRT systems tend to have lower capital costs, a tram system could also be considered. At near-capacity operation, trams may be more effective in encouraging a modal shift away from travelling by car. Evidence from a preliminary simulation model, which was built to evaluate the demand a hypothetical tramline from the airport to the city centre would attract, suggests that a tram would encourage users to switch to public transport. Suggestions for further work for model refinement coupled with better understanding system impacts of the proposed tram system are included.","PeriodicalId":54571,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Municipal Engineer","volume":"74 1","pages":"185-185"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83759134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A decade on, the Manual for Streets signalled a rebalancing of the hierarchy of movement towards the pedestrian, redressing the dominance of the car and transport engineer in ensuring effective flow of traffic. The notion of social inclusion in transport also brought into play wider consideration of how the built environment, fear of crime and other barriers conspire to restrict mobility and access to public transport. This paper critiques access in the UK’s urban environment and to formal transport, including an assessment of design and planning guidance in the form of toolkits and models which have been developed in this period to assist transport and urban planners and designers in street and transport service provision. This will draw on a 6 year study of accessibility and user needs in transport with a focus on urban design and social inclusion. A street design audit approach will then be outlined, which responds to these access imperatives and seeks to join up the whole journey environment.","PeriodicalId":54571,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Municipal Engineer","volume":"19 1 1","pages":"32-44"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2015-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78410404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
