The beam joint region is however vulnerable for deterioration and for design/detailing shortcomings. This study explored the nonlinear numerical modelling potential of the behaviour of a series of impaired half-joint beams. The major defects were: diagonal-bar/ U-bar unavailability; shear reinforcement inadequacy; and reinforcement corrosion. The results highlighted the numerical simulation capabilities to capture global/local behaviours of the beam series. The load capacity prediction offset was in an impressive range of −16.7% to +1.5% and, in contrast, the predictions from the commonly used strut-and-tie model (STM) showed offsets in the extent of −39.2% to 16.9%. Subsequently, an experimental study was established using the FE model to explore the retrofitting potential of defective half-joint beams with a deep embedded (DE) technique. The strength enhancement was almost 30% and the internal load paths as well as the failure mode of the defective beam alternated favourably with the post-installation of the retrofitting element. Thus, the DE technique was identified to be an ideal option to retrofit impaired half-joint beams.","PeriodicalId":54570,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Structures and Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86965075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The monitoring was performed within the activity of a research project aimed at providing a general framework to check the structural health of heritage structures and real-time detect any potential damage that may compromise their safety. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the selected case study (a tunnel-like masonry structure) represents a challenging experiment both for the type of structure itself and for the technical solution employed for installing the monitoring system. After a brief description of the installed monitoring system and the design of the sensor layout, this paper summarizes the lesson learned after one year of monitoring.","PeriodicalId":54570,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Structures and Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83385476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present work cyclic test was conducted on exterior beam-column joint made with slag based geopolymer after exposing the specimens to natural fire. Further, mechanical properties of reinforcement embedded in fire exposed specimen were also determined and analysed. Cyclic test results indicated that deterioration of geopolymer and rebar alter the failure pattern of fire exposed specimen from desired beam end hinging to joint shear failure. Peak load, stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation reduced significantly in fire exposed specimen compared with unheated control specimen.","PeriodicalId":54570,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Structures and Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90289876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The extent of the weight savings depends on the type of member and  the mode of loading. Lighter sections lead to reductions in carbon and, usually, lower material costs. The reduction in weight can also lead to a cost saving in the foundations, welding, fabrication, transportation and erection. As a result of these benefits, steels of higher strength are being used increasingly in a range of applications in construction, particularly for heavy columns, transfer beams, trusses and bridge girders. Certain aspects of the design and fabrication of HSS require special attention in order to exploit fully the benefits of the high strength. In 2018, ICE awarded a grant from the ICE Research and Development Enabling Fund for SCI to write a guide covering both design and execution of HSS of yield strength from 420 MPa up to 700 MPa, giving ‘holistic’ guidance covering strength, stability, serviceability and fabrication. The High Strength Steel Design and Execution Guide, was written in collaboration with experts in the steel construction supply chain, and was published in 2020.","PeriodicalId":54570,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Structures and Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78822587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite several preventive measures been taken, substantial financial loss was reported in the past earthquakes, and one of the main causes was attributed to damage or collapse of the ceilings due to excessive ceiling sway during earthquakes. This paper proposes a practical approach of incorporating customized viscous dampers into the suspended ceilings to mitigate their seismic response. Unlike conventionally been done in most fabs where diagonal bracing rods were added between suspended ceilings and structural floor slab to mitigate ceilings’ vibration, it is proposed to install customized viscous dampers in between the ceiling and the column/wall. An analytical model to simulate the vibration of a suspended ceiling is first developed, followed by shake table tests of the ceiling-structure model to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed approach. Results indicated that when equipped with the viscous dampers, the displacement responses of the suspended ceiling can be significantly reduced, and incorporating the dampers into the ceiling with added bracing rods is shown to give the best seismic performance.","PeriodicalId":54570,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Structures and Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90863807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The test results showed that the area of corrosion-induced cracking on the tension surface of the beams firstly increased when the static load level increased from 0 to 0.2, then decreased as the static load level increased from 0.2 to 0.4, thereafter increased until the static load level reached 0.6. The maximum width of longitudinal corrosion cracks had a strong linear relationship with corrosion duration and tended to increase with static load level and RCA replacement ratio. The lognormal distribution satisfactorily described the probability distribution of the width of longitudinal corrosion cracks. For the beams with a larger static load level, the degree of scatter of the crack width tended to increase, and the shape of the probability distribution curve tended to be flat. The research results are helpful to improve the durability design theory of recycled aggregate concrete beams under load and can play an important role in promoting the engineering application of recycled aggregate concrete beams.","PeriodicalId":54570,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Structures and Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90747308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current market shows a dominance of rectangular cross-sections in engineered timber solutions. Roundwood, as traditional material in the past, is not common anymore due to missing applications in modern structures, lost knowledge in handcraft skills and high costs of CNC-based manufacturing. However, solid timber with round cross-sections outperforms other engineered wood products, such as glued laminated products, in terms of energy consumption and environmental aspects. To overcome restrictions in joint technologies and to increase the usability of roundwood, especially in truss structures, new-type connectors have been developed. The investigations split in two research topics: the connection design in roundwood with modified bonded-in rods and the design of wood–fibre composite moulded connectors, presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":54570,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Structures and Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77778452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results are as follows: 1) The bearing capacity of the IBEPsc is controlled by the maximum principal tensile stress; the optimal structural parameters of the IBEPsc for a self-insulated wall with a large safety margin are presented. 2) The consideration of strips vs. whole plates and the selected upper bearing constraint type have little influence on the mechanical properties. In practical applications, the strips and whole plates can be reasonably selected according to engineering needs, and these components can be connected with the main structure by conventional mortar. 3) According to a qualitative analysis and comparison with common I-shaped thermal insulation walls, the IBEPsc requires the least material and weight while ensuring a sufficient safety margin in terms of mechanical and thermal insulation performance. Hence, biomimic techniques can play a key role in breaking through the limitations of traditional structures. This paper can help direct the application of beetle elytron plates in prefabricated wallboards.","PeriodicalId":54570,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Structures and Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2021-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90870678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Six square-section columns were cast to investigate the effects of different reinforcement types. The results showed failure modes depended on reinforcement material, shape and stirrup spacing. Across all specimens, steel-reinforced columns had higher loading capacity and better ductile performance, followed by L-shape and then round polymer bars. Smaller spiral spacing increased confinement efficiency and ductility and provided sufficient restraint against longitudinal polymer bar buckling. Finite-element models were also calibrated, and the results were in close agreement with experimental measurements. Based on the calibrated models, numerical parameters were studied to understand further the behavior of composite columns reinforced with glass-fibre-reinforced polymer.","PeriodicalId":54570,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Structures and Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2021-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83426643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
