Among the current available resources to conduct such studies, mathematic modelling presents great efficiency due to its low cost, speed and reliability. The total charge and grinding media charge are very important variables to conduct modelling exercises that aim at power draw and product size distribution forecasting. However, the common measurement methods require people entering the equipment, which carries a number of adversities related to confined spaces. In this regard, this paper presents the development of a method and the prototype of a device able to measure tumbling mill charges, quickly, precisely, with low cost and, above all, ensuring safety. The result of this work is a method that allows equivalent or superior precision in comparison to the existing methods, whose main aspect is to eliminate the requirement of people entering dangerous environments, such as tumbling mills.","PeriodicalId":54498,"journal":{"name":"Rem-Revista Escola De Minas","volume":"1 1","pages":"311-316"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89854828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of these issues is the role played by friction at the interface between the steel profile and the slab which, under particular circumstances, may be relevant for serviceability limit states and also for ultimate limit states. The Brazilian and American Standards do not yet recognize the friction contribution in the behaviour of composite beams, though they recognize this contribution in composite slabs. This paper presents the experimental tests carried out with and without friction contribution on simple supported composite beams with flexible connectors and the numerical models developed to simulate the behaviour of the tested beams. The experimental tests revealed significant increases in strength and stiffness of the composite beam due to friction contribution and the comparisons between numerical and experimental results displayed good correlations.","PeriodicalId":54498,"journal":{"name":"Rem-Revista Escola De Minas","volume":"2 1","pages":"253-258"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73555846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article illustrates, with a practical example, that it is possible to achieve the modern requirements of quality, safety and productivity, while operating with mining equipment that basically possesses the same characteristics as that employed in the 1950s. The operation involved the excavation of a 6 meter long tunnel and over 25 stoping sections in both rock and concrete by drilling and blasting in an underground gold mine. The article describes how the main operational problems were overcome. An effective drilling pattern was designed in order to be easily achievable with the limited local equipment. The behavior of the local nitrate explosive was effectively predicted and managed. The interaction with the drilling teams was managed in order to determine a meeting point between their traditional working methods and the scientific view of the engineer. At the end of the article some general guidelines are proposed for the management of similar situations, in order to improve the efficiency, productivity and safety of drill and blast operations in small-scale mines.","PeriodicalId":54498,"journal":{"name":"Rem-Revista Escola De Minas","volume":"54 1","pages":"303-310"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73505191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such costs may be further reduced by replacing fuel oil with alternative fuels such as biomass (biodiesel, rice straw, corn cob, sugar cane bagasse) and tires residue. This paper investigates the use of other fuels instead of fuel oil by measuring the detonation velocity (VOD) and verifying the importance of these fuels in an explosive mixture. Except for biodiesel, all the tests conducted for the mixture of ammonium nitrate and alternative fuels showed poor performance when compared with ANFO. The achieved percentage of detonation velocity (VOD) of the mixtures in relation to the ANFO were 55.4% for ammonium nitrate + rice straw, 64.9% for ammonium nitrate + corn cob, 70.1% for ammonium nitrate + sugar cane bagasse, 74.4% for ammonium nitrate + tires residue and 93.7% for ammonium nitrate + biodiesel. This study indicates that the methodology proposed can be applied as a reference for determination and preparation of explosive mixtures of fuel and oxidizing agents since in all the tests conducted the detonation of the charges occurred.","PeriodicalId":54498,"journal":{"name":"Rem-Revista Escola De Minas","volume":"122 1","pages":"297-302"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77653562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To validate the representativeness of the borehole samples selected for the mineral processing studies, the geological resources evaluation team proposed a methodology based on the utilization of statistical analyses that, beyond considering the spatial distribution of the samples in the deposit, also assessed if they are representative of the populations under investigation. With this data, the geologist is able to make a fast analysis of the sampling’s representativeness.","PeriodicalId":54498,"journal":{"name":"Rem-Revista Escola De Minas","volume":"22 1","pages":"271-277"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75396003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such structural components are widely used on roofs for which long span components are a necessity, e. g., supermarkets, distribution centers, etc. The application supplies hints to the project engineers as to the most economic solutions for a combination of span, loads, and other characteristics. Software development techniques are also explored. Such techniques can be divided into two large groups. In the first one, which is most widely known and used, software development complies with very rigid planning, where processes are more important than skills. This methodology is known as the Rigorous Development System (RDS). The second group, called Agile Development System (ADS), is conceived as an option for those not aligned with the RDS rules. This text describes the experience of an ADS based software development for truss design. In Section 2, the basis of ADS is presented. Section 3 describes the truss design application and civil engineering related concepts. Section 4 brings an example illustrating the application. Conclusions are in Section 5.","PeriodicalId":54498,"journal":{"name":"Rem-Revista Escola De Minas","volume":"9 1","pages":"259-264"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81187745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Once André Malraux said that “as it is impossible to resuscitate the dead, we resuscitate the dreams” and popular wisdom complements: “it is the most beautiful teaching that can be linked to the youth of today and the men of tomorrow”. Herein, one of these dreams is relived. It begins 150 years ago with the birth of CLAUDE HENRI GORCEIX in Saint Denis des Murs (Haute Vienne), a small village of only four houses, on October 19, 1842, son of Antoine Gorceix and Valerie Cecile Gorceix. When he was almost 9 years old, his father died and his mother, together with her seven children, went to live in Saint Leonard. At 12 years of age, he obtained a scholarship at the Liceu de Limoges, where he distinguished himself for his active intelligence and devotion to his work. He attributed his successes to his professors for whom he preserved an undisputable remembrance until the end of his life. After receiving his diploma in 1860, his scholarship was transferred to the Liceu de Douai, where a mathematics course prepared him for the Éscole Normale (sciences), the preparation of which was completed at the Instituição Massin in Paris. The following year, he entered the École Normale (Sciences). Here, he demonstrated a passion for Geology and Mineralogy, subjects in which he was said to be not only brilliant, but also very active, forecasting a career as a geologist. He finished the course in 1866 with a “Generalist in physical sciences and mathematics” diploma. Appointed Professor of Physics at the Liceu de Angoulême, he returned to Éscole as aggregated preparer of Geology and afterwards was sent to Athens as a science professor at the famous L’École française d’Anthènes.","PeriodicalId":54498,"journal":{"name":"Rem-Revista Escola De Minas","volume":"4 1","pages":"319-340"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91179073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Submicrometer cutting conditions were applied in order to generate ductile response during single point machining. The profile generated by the rapid removal of the tool tip from the machined surface, analyzed by atomic force microscopy, showed that the brittle-to-ductile transition occurs at a few tenths of micrometers. According to the machining results, the maximum feed rate capable of generating a ductile mode machining behavior is of 0.9 micrometer/revolution. Furthermore, it was shown that with the cutting depth lower than 0.100 micrometer/revolution, the material removal mechanism is totally ductile. Ribbon-like chips were not observed when ductile machining was performed, as commonly seen during ductile machining of semiconductor crystals. The chips removed had a small needle-like shape. This material's fragile behavior during machining may be related to high densification during tool/material interaction with subsequent elastic recovery response.","PeriodicalId":54498,"journal":{"name":"Rem-Revista Escola De Minas","volume":"12 1","pages":"167-172"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78509586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
