Therefore, we report here E. kardangensis as a new synonym of E. gerardiana. Discrepancies in the description, diagnosis, and type specimen of E. kardangensis are discussed. Based on this, a neotype housed at the MG herbarium, Pará, Brazil (Huber 4296, MG) was proposed by V. C. Hollowell in her treatment of Pariana for Flora Mesoamericana. During recent review of the Pariana collections of the MG herbarium, the type specimen supposedly lost was rediscovered. Here we recognize the holotype status of the Huber 1440 (MG) specimen. In the process, we also resolved a 118-yr-old enigma regarding a similar specimen, Huber 4296 (MG), which is a new species formally described here as Pariana huberi. In addition to the description of the new species, an emended description of P. maynensis, and a comparison with morphologically similar species are provided, as well as an updated distribution map and an informal conservation status for both species.","PeriodicalId":54438,"journal":{"name":"Systematic Botany","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48225950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on morphological features Monochilus is hypothesized to be closely related to Amasonia within subfamily Ajugoideae. However, Monochilus is one of the few genera within Lamiaceae never to be represented in a published molecular phylogenetic study, and thus has an uncertain placement with the subfamily. During recent herbarium exploration in association with the Flora of Brasil 2020 project, new specimens of Monochilus gloxinifolius and M. obovatus were uncovered. Based on this material, a new phylogeny of Ajugoideae was constructed based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and chloroplast matK and trnL-trnF markers. Monochilus, as previously hypothesized, is closely related to Amasonia and placed within Ajugoideae. We discuss the phylogenetic placement of the genus and provide a taxonomic revision with description, distribution maps, an identification key, preliminary conservation assessments, photographic plates, and comments on both the taxonomy and ecology of these two species. Additionally, we provide a lectotypification for M. gloxinifolius.","PeriodicalId":54438,"journal":{"name":"Systematic Botany","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43006229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Centroglossa has a very similar habit and is indistinguishable from Zygostates, whereas Dunstervillea has as its main characteristic the calcarate labellum, also found in Centroglossa. We clarify the systematic and phylogenetic positioning of Centroglossa and Dunstervillea in the Ornithocephalus clade (OC) through analysis of maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference, and maximum parsimony from molecular data (nrITS and matK cpDNA) and morphology. Our results indicate that Dunstervillea is phylogenetically close to Eloyella; both genera have a psigmoid habit, single-sided and flattened leaves, floral perianth with the same coloring, petals with entire margins, and a short rostellum. Centroglossa appears as a subclade within Zygostates. In addition to several homoplastic features, these two genera have the dorsal position of viscidium as a synapomorphy. The calcarate labellum, common to Centroglossa and Dunstervillea, originated more than once in the OC. Based on the phylogenetic results, we propose the nomenclatural changes to include Dunstervillea in Eloyella and Centroglossa in Zygostates. New synonyms are indicated to Zygostates greeniana and Z. nunes-limae and lectotypes are indicated to Centroglossa macroceras and C. glaziovii.","PeriodicalId":54438,"journal":{"name":"Systematic Botany","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46105356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, given the subsequent generic recircumscriptions in the subtribe Cassiinae, and the expanded collections of these taxa, there is a need to revisit the taxonomy of the group. The present study aimed to conduct a detailed taxonomic revision of the species of Chamaecrista indigenous to the flora of southern Africa region. Extensive fieldwork was carried out to study the taxa in their natural environment and morphological characters were additionally studied using herbarium material. The revision presented here includes comprehensive descriptions, a key to the species, nomenclature, typifications, diagnostic characters with illustrations, and geographical distribution maps of all recognised taxa. Eleven species of Chamaecrista are recognised for the flora of southern Africa, two of which are described as new, i.e. Chamaecrista grandiglandulata and C. gordon-grayei. In addition, one new subspecies is described, namely C. gordon-grayei subsp. longipedicellata, while Chamaecrista comosa var. capriconia is raised to the rank of subspecies, viz. Chamaecrista comosa subsp. capriconia. The typifications published here include lectotypes designated for Chamaecrista plumosa and C. stricta, neotypes designated for C. capensis var. flavescens, C. comosa, and C. plumosa var. diffusa, and an isolectotype designated for C. stricta.","PeriodicalId":54438,"journal":{"name":"Systematic Botany","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43220177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
