The main problems for the vegetation of this ecosystem are the physical destruction and the synanthropisation, the latter due to the colonisation of both alien and apophyte species, favoured by human action. This study analyses the degree of synanthropisation of the vegetation of a stretch of coastline in southern Spain, by systematically surveying the flora present in six biotopes: beach, foredune, mid-dune, back-dune, creek and rocky area. The percentage of synanthropic species was 51%, of which 33% are apophytes, mainly ruderal species and weeds, and 18% are alien species, mostly from gardens adjacent to the coastal zone. The degree of synanthropisation varies by biotope, ranging from zero on the beach to 63% on the back-dune, with a marked increase from the beach inland. Richness and diversity is highest in biotopes with higher synanthropisation, but at the cost of lower naturalness. Measures need to be taken to protect coastal vegetation, both from destruction and synanthropisation.","PeriodicalId":54240,"journal":{"name":"Mediterranean Botany","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48800618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present a compendium of the minimum standards that manuscripts based in field research should comply in order to positively pass to the review process, as a minimum quality requirement. We pay special attention to the contents that should be included in the method and results sections, which are often the ones that present problems of format, style or content. Without being in any way exhaustive in the listed standards, we believe that these recommendations will help authors to present their texts and reviewers to evaluate them.","PeriodicalId":54240,"journal":{"name":"Mediterranean Botany","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49359392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To test three predictions derived from the relationship between sexual specialization and compatibility levels, we analyzed the breeding system (self-incompatibility) of Polygonatum verticillatum and the variation in sexual investment to stamens, ovules, pollen grains and P:O ratio among flowers at different positions of the inflorescence. Our results show that in self-compatible P. verticillatum sexual investment varies throughout the inflorescence with an increase in the number of pollen grains but does not show male specialization in top flowers, unlike other self-incompatible species of the genus previously studied. Comparative studies of the variation in floral sex allocation between taxonomically close species should contribute to a better interpretation of the relationships between sexual investment and the breeding system.","PeriodicalId":54240,"journal":{"name":"Mediterranean Botany","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47286493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We studied the woodlands of the class Pinetea halepensis dominated by Pinus halepensis, P. pinaster, and P. pinea in Sardinia (Italy) with the aim to clarify their syntaxonomic position. We compiled a dataset of 66 original vegetation relevés, complemented with the holotypes of similar vegetation types formerly described for Italy and Corsica (France). We classified P. halepensis woodlands, native to the Island of San Pietro, to the association Erico arboreae-Pinetum halepensis. We classified P. halepensis woodlands growing on limestones of the south-western coast of Sardinia to the new association Smilaco asperae-Pinetum halepensis and woodlands typical of coastal dunes to the new association Asparago horridi-Pinetum halepensis. We also described the north-eastern Sardinia P. pinaster woodlands as the new association Arbuto unedonis-Pinetum pinastri, of which we recognised two new subassociations, typicum and cephalantheretosum longifoliae, ecologically distinguished by the xerophilous and mesophilous conditions, respectively. Furthermore, we classified P. pinea woodlands, putatively native only to stabilised sand dunes of south-western Sardinia, in the new association Querco calliprini-Pinetum pineae. This study represents the first complete survey and classification of Sardinian pine woodlands, allowing a better understanding of their ecology, floristic composition and differences with other Mediterranean pine woodlands.","PeriodicalId":54240,"journal":{"name":"Mediterranean Botany","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41918410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, research into the species-area and minimum area dynamics of Mediterranean vegetation remains scarce, and this is particularly concerning since the heterogeneity of Mediterranean mosaic systems is being threatened by widespread land abandonment. This study investigates the woody vegetation at three semi-abandoned olive groves in the Sierra Morena de Córdoba, Southern Spain. We determined the mathematical nature of the species-area curves, and obtained minimum area values as a threshold patch size to target in terms of efficiently maximising species richness conservation. Power models proposed by Arrhenius could represent the species-area relationship of all three sites, yet Gleason’s exponential model performed better at one of the groves. Surrounding habitat quality and vegetation history impacted the nature of the species-area relationship, and this was reflected in significant differences among the minimum area values. This study provides one the first descriptions of woody plant communities at partially and intermittently managed groves in the Mediterranean region, and gives insight into the potential impacts of partial abandonment on landscape conservation. Enlarging patches up to the minimum area threshold could promote plant diversity whilst maintaining an open landscape, although researchers should give special care into adequately modelling the species-area relationship, in order to obtain appropriate minimum area values. \u0000 ","PeriodicalId":54240,"journal":{"name":"Mediterranean Botany","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46669992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study provides information on plant species used for medicinal purposes by indigenous people during 16th to 21st century. The aim of the study was to collect, preserve and elaborate data on pharmaceutical plants used by Milos’ inhabitants, to find new plants used in traditional medicine or new uses of the already known ones and to reveal and explain changes of medicinal plants used through 16th to 21st centuries. Data on plant species, for other purposes, except eating, were also collected. Additionally, the data collected were compared to previous literature in order to explain the changes in phytopharmaceutical approaches on the island during 16th to 21st centuries. The research was based on interviews of inhabitants, concerning medicinal plant species used in 20th and 21st centuries, on an unpublished manuscript and on local, folk literature on pharmaceutical plant species during 16th and 19th centuries.","PeriodicalId":54240,"journal":{"name":"Mediterranean Botany","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47490603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
