There is, however, no direct evidence that links the thermal discharges with jellyfish blooms. In this study, we conducted 3 cruises (pre-bloom, bloom, and post-bloom) during July to September 2017 in the area surrounding the largest NPP in northern China. The water temperature near the cooling water outfall rose by 2 °C. Although we found no significant impact on phytoplankton abundance or community composition near the outfall, a broader analysis of monitoring data revealed significant correlations between temperature and the abundance of\u0000 Nemopilema nomurai\u0000 , cyanobacteria, and haptophytes. Temperature increases may have a stimulatory effect on key stages in the life history of jellyfish, and the abundance of jellyfish prey may be the factor that triggers jellyfish blooms. Blooms of jellyfish were accompanied by a decline of diatom dominance and an increase of the concentrations of small phytoplankton such as cyanobacteria and haptophytes. This study revealed for the first time a significant positive correlation (\u0000 R\u0000 2\u0000 = 0.39,\u0000 P <\u0000 0.001) between jellyfish abundance and concentrations of dissolved organic nutrients. This correlation suggested that the blooms of jellyfish resulted in the release of large amounts of organic nutrients. The results provided a comprehensive perspective and suggested a need for further study of the dynamics of planktonic ecosystems to link thermal discharges and jellyfish blooms.\u0000

The extensive use of geographic information system and remote sensing data in risk assessments of water quality from a spatiotemporal perspective can complement water resource management. In this study, we investigated Baimei reservoir conservation area, Fujian Province, China. The quantitatively inversed leaf area index was used to represent the vegetation growth condition in simulations of the hydrological process using soil and water assessment tool. According to the simulation results, the spatial distribution of the risk to water quality was mainly related to the land-use condition, and the temporal distribution of the risk to water quality was mainly related to the precipitation dynamics. Single factor analysis of various scenarios showed that uncontrolled expansion of agricultural land (scenario A) would lead to an overall average increase of 231.9% in the total nitrogen (TN) load in the basin. By contrast, if agricultural lands are all transformed into forests (scenario B), then the overall TN load in the basin would decrease by an average of 20.8%. In practical terms, conversion of sloping agricultural lands to forests (scenario C) could reduce the overall TN load by 17.0%. Thus, moderate conversion of agricultural lands to forests can reduce the pollution load effectively. The simulation results obtained for scenarios with adjustments to the fertilization time and amount showed that applying fertilizer on rainy days would increase the risk to water quality compared with days without rain. The method developed in this study can be applied for dynamic analysis in water quality risk assessments of water conservation areas and can provide a scientific reference for promoting ecological management strategies and sustainable development at the regional scale.

The present study was conducted to investigate the structural and functional changes in an intact seminatural grassland community when exposed to elevated O\u0000 3\u0000 (EO\u0000 3\u0000 ; ambient + 20 parts per billion) compared to ambient O\u0000 3\u0000 (AO\u0000 3\u0000 ) for 3 years using open-top chambers. Parameters such as species richness (SR), evenness (\u0000 E\u0000 ), Shannon index (\u0000 H\u0000 ′), β-diversity (BD), concentration of dominance (Cd), similarity index (SI), biomass in canopy layers, and community productivity were evaluated. Higher reduction in total biomass compared to aboveground biomass indicates less carbon allocation toward root system. The results of the present study clearly indicates that 3 years of exposure at EO\u0000 3\u0000 level caused deleterious impact on grassland community by increasing O\u0000 3\u0000 -tolerant and decreasing sensitive species, thus resulting in a shift in species composition and community productivity.\u0000

However, it is still unclear how vegetation dynamics affect soil organic carbon (SOC) and its fractions (labile and recalcitrant C (LC and RC)) in coastal wetlands. Here, we quantified the effects of saltmarsh vegetation dynamics on the SOC and its fractions using the invasive\u0000 Spartina alterniflora\u0000 and co-occurring native\u0000 Phragmites australis\u0000 communities as a model. SOC contents in these 2 communities showed similar spatial patterns with an inverted U-shaped curve from tidal mudflats to vegetated marshes. Our results suggested that plant ecophysiological traits play a primary role in regulating the spatial distribution of SOC. In addition, the lower ratio of leaf to shoot in\u0000 P. australis\u0000 community facilitates the accumulation of RC, while the lower soil pH in\u0000 S. alterniflora\u0000 may accelerate the decomposition of RC. The findings indicated that\u0000 S. alterniflora\u0000 could accumulate more C in the soil owing to its greater plant biomass and photosynthesis rate. However, the reduced soil pH by\u0000 S. alterniflora\u0000 invasion might restrain SOC accumulation. Our findings shed light on the impacts of long-term species invasion on SOC and its fractions in coastal wetlands under global changes.\u0000
