Since the passage of board certification in the APTA House of Delegates in 2016, the Description of Specialty Practice has defined the scope and parameters of this specialization and has set benchmarks for practitioner knowledge, skills, and behaviors. Concurrently, several institutions have established oncology residencies for physical therapists, with many others in the developing stages. Residencies are extensive postgraduate, on-the-job training opportunities whereby a resident is closely mentored by a team of clinical experts. Accreditation standards for oncology residencies are established by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education. This article provides perspectives on the current role of and future opportunities for oncology physical therapy residency programs. The infrastructure, institutional support, and development of residents and faculty mentors show great potential to further the specialty area, enhance patient access, and elevate the quality of services available to persons living with and beyond cancer.","PeriodicalId":54153,"journal":{"name":"Rehabilitation Oncology","volume":"21 1","pages":"47 - 55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87353894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Background: As prevalence of cancer survivors continues to grow, physical therapists will play a major role in cancer rehabilitation. To meet growing educational needs for oncology physical therapy, the George Washington University DPT program developed an online elective course. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore student motivation for course enrollment, student self-perceived strengths and weaknesses in oncology physical therapy, and personal learning objectives. Design: Retrospective qualitative analysis. Methods: Pre and postcourse student narrative responses, based on self-reflection, were analyzed using a general inductive approach to identify themes. Results: Sixteen students enrolled in the course over 2 years. Students were interested in complex patient management and understood the effect of changing survival rates in future practice. Self-perceived strengths related to oncology physical therapy were rooted in communication skills, adaptability, compassion, and empathy. Students' perceived weaknesses and objectives ranged from oncological disease and treatment to safe physical therapy interventions. Students expressed concerns related to the emotional toll working with this population; they identified areas for future self-study. Conclusion: This course provided additional learning experiences in the management of patients with a cancer history. As adult learners, students identified learning objectives and explored topics in a supportive, self-directed learning environment. Educational needs related to oncological medical management and provision of safe and effective physical therapy interventions and psychosocial concerns expressed by our student group are similar to those of practicing clinicians. Qualitative analysis served as a useful tool to identify future course direction.","PeriodicalId":54153,"journal":{"name":"Rehabilitation Oncology","volume":"10 1","pages":"16 - 23"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85380946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The increased responsibility for diagnosis, referral, and supervision of patients requires that clinicians possess a depth of knowledge to effectively manage the patient. The expansion of specialty practice is necessary to meet the needs of a health care system that is increasingly focused on the value of delivered services. Residency programs are uniquely positioned to meet the demands of quality by providing intensive training for clinicians in a specialty area. The structure and learning environment of a residency program is conducive to the development and practice of advanced clinical reasoning skills and the organization of knowledge across the spectrum of patient complexity. By executing the delivery of care efficiently and effectively, residency graduates bring value not only to the patient but also to their organization, the specialty, and the health care system as whole. The purposes of this perspective article are (1) to examine the role of residency education within the context of the health care system, (2) to explore the relationship between value and residency pedagogy, and (3) to identify key components that drive quality in residency education.","PeriodicalId":54153,"journal":{"name":"Rehabilitation Oncology","volume":"15 1","pages":"32 - 37"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87921680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
