It is not at all accidental that this cosmopolitan bias was consolidated by the appearance of the printed book. Filippo Brunelleschi’s Ospedale degl’ Innocenti (begun 1419) is commonly recognized as the first expression of the formal aspirations of Renaissance architects. Leon Batista Alberti’s De Re Aedificatore (c. 1485) was the first book to present the same aesthetic criteria in graphic form. Neither building nor book would have been accessible to the average European — then or for centuries to come. Illiterate peasants could not have read the book; and even literate townspeople could not have afforded to buy it.
