The purpose of this paper is to study the reception of Waugh’s novels in two countries governed by totalitarian regimes—Franco’s Spain and communist Romania—where culture was controlled by severe censorship systems. The methodology employed is based on Hans Robert Jauss’s aesthetics of reception. The value of these suffixes is determined by the self-protective strategies employed by the informants, due to the communicative circumstances in which they are immersed. A partir del analisis de un conjunto de muestras orales del Corpus sociolinguistico de Caracas 2004-2013 –o PRESEEA-CA– (Bentivoglio y Malaver, 2006, 2012; Gallucci, Gonzalez y Malaver, 2013) estratificadas segun la edad, el sexo y el grado de instruccion de los hablantes, identificamos seis tipos principales de citas –que denominamos propias o propiamente de DR – y dos perifericas –o impropias –. Ademas de la clasificacion y de los criterios metodologicos empleados para el analisis del DR en conversaciones semidirigidas, describimos su distribucion en la muestra, con especial referencia a la cita directa, y en relacion con las variables sociales antes descritas. PALABRAS CLAVE: discurso referido, continuum , sociolinguistica, PRESEEA, espanol de Caracas Sociolinguistic study of reported speech as both a category and a continuum in the spoken Spanish of Caracas In this study we consider reported speech (RS) as a continuum of different forms. Based on the analysis of spoken discourse from Corpus sociolinguistico de Caracas 2004-2013 –or PRESEEA-CA– (Bentivoglio y Malaver 2006, 2012; Gallucci, Gonzalez y Malaver, 2013), which is stratified by age, sex, and educational level, we identify six main types of quotes –which we call proper of RS – and two peripheral types –or improper –. In addition to our classification and methodological criteria for the analysis of RS in semi-structured conversations, we describe its distribution on the sample, with special reference to the direct speech and to the social variables described above. Entre sus objetivos estaba aplicar el analisis sintactico a la caracterizacion linguoestilistica de textos mas extensos. Los resultados finales de la investigacion nunca fueron publicados, pero la metodologia elaborada es aun empleada en cursos de posgrado impartidos en la Facultad de Artes y Letras de la Universidad de La Habana. En el presente trabajo se aplica la metodologia propuesta, con el fin de analizar dos cuentos y compararlos. La intencion no es realizar un analisis linguoestilistico detallado, sino mostrar la aplicacion de un metodo de analisis sintactico a un rasgo particular en el estilo de los cuentos: la tecnica del flujo de conciencia. EnglishIn the late eighties, as part of the research project “The Spanish language in Cuba”, the study “Syntax of the educated norm of Cuba: the short story and newspaper article” was performed under the direction of Professor Luis Enrique Rodriguez. One of the objectives was to apply syntactic analysis to the linguo-stylistic characterization of more extensive texts. The final results of the investigation were never published, but the methodology developed is still used in postgraduate courses taught at the Faculty of Arts and Letters of the University of Havana. In the present article, the proposed methodology is applied to analyze two short stories and compare them.
