The species with bisexual flowers, all of them endemic either to the Greater Antilles or Cuba only, form (at least) two phylogenetically distinct groups. Ocotea bucheri, O. libanensis, O. moaensis, O. reticularis, and an undescribed species, all of them endemics of Eastern Cuba, form the sister group to the genus Damburneya. It comprises ca. 80 species in six genera: the Chaiturus, Lagochilus, Lagopsis, Leonurus, Loxocalyx, and Panzerina. Although the monophyly of Leonureae is well-supported, the relationships within the tribe remain unclear, and the non-monophyly of Lagopsis and Leonurus needs to be revised. Leonureae is particularly diverse in the arid regions of Central Asia, and it has been indicated that the diversification of Lagochilus and Panzerina was affected by the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau's uplift and Quaternary climate oscillation. As the present understanding of Leonureae is deficient in taxonomy, phylogeny, and biogeography, this review aims to consolidate the current knowledge, hoping to promote the research progress.
","PeriodicalId":53662,"journal":{"name":"Feddes Repertorium","volume":"135 4","pages":"358-366"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141798551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They consist of hundreds of hyposporangiate microsporangiophores with numerous microsporangia, arranged in up to three abaxial rows. Convincing evidence was found that excludes the widely accepted sporophyll concept of coniferous microsporangiophores. It is shown that the units treated generally as sporophylls in fact represent a complex fusion product of numerous microsporangiophores (= synangia). The vasculature in the microsporangiophore may indicate that the hyposporangiate shape is derived from an ancestral perisporangiate condition. In particular, the bundle strands ending blindly in the tissue in distal parts of the scutellum can only be understood as belonging to aborted microsporangia. Transferring this concept to other conifers with hyposporangiate microsporangiophores a perisporangiate origin seems also highly likely for them. This is well supported by the fact that in usually hyposporangiate taxa occasionally perisporangiate microsporangiophores are developed. Thus, the gained results clearly indicate that each microsporangiophore corresponds to a lateral cone (= flower equivalent structure), and the entire pollen cone to a compound structure (= inflorescence equivalent structure). Thus, the evolutionary pathway of araucariaceous pollen cones fits well to the pseudanthial origin suggested previously for the male reproductive structures in other coniferous groups, e.g., Pinaceae or Taxaceae.
","PeriodicalId":53662,"journal":{"name":"Feddes Repertorium","volume":"135 4","pages":"305-324"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/fedr.202400006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141709165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As per reports, the traits that differentiate I. henryi from I. globosa are lanceolate or linear lanceolate leaves up to 8 cm long, 8 mm long pedicels, 9–11 nerved setose hairy glumes, staminate lower floret with 1.5–2 mm long anthers, bisexual upper floret and glabrous palea and lemma.
