{"title":"Demonic education: Rethinking education through a political theology lens","authors":"Charlotte Haines Lyon","doi":"10.3898/forum.2024.66.1.11","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3898/forum.2024.66.1.11","url":null,"abstract":"As we move towards an ever-increasing authoritarian, neoliberal and populist education, it is noticeable how elements of religious thought are embedded into our language and practices. This article uses the lens of political theology, drawing on Carl Schmitt's work which explores how\u0000 the secular is often based on theological concepts such as sovereignty, obedience, good and evil. Political theology will be used to problematise the self-legitimising education system in England, the apparent necessity for populist behaviour in advocating for such a system, and finally the\u0000 demonising of children. One-third of teachers leave before they have completed five years. This paper discusses the results of a small-scale study completed with six inner-London secondary\u0000 teachers which focuses on their everyday experiences in these complex times. The study finds that teacher identity for those who have fewer than five years' experience can be considered under the three headings of passion, frustration and hope. While these are in balance, the teacher is likely\u0000 to stay in the profession. If the frustration component grows too large, the teacher is likely to leave.
