This case report discusses how the Malaysian Health Coalition COVID-19 health crisis communications’ occupational therapy-led efforts have ventured to strike a balance between both: supporting Malaysian mental health and well-being alongside enabling maintenance of behaviours needed to control viral spread. Strategic leadership roles present an opportunity for occupational therapists to influence the integration of trauma-informed, occupation-focused mental health messages into health crisis communications in a culturally relevant manner. Furthermore, the population health approach to primary-level public health intervention through this medium can serve to amplify occupational therapists’ professional recommendations. This report can serve as an example to occupational therapists looking to expand their practices into public mental health, particularly those working with culturally collectivist populations.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"77 1","pages":"10 - 15"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1836792","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42514118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The impacts of this quarantine included disruption of daily occupational habits and balance, having resulted in compromised physical and mental health. During this physical distancing period, occupational therapists in Yunnan Province of China delivered a health promotion programme using WeChat, an online platform. The main purpose of the programme was to support the redesigning of a person’s lifestyle in the face of the pandemic, as well as to enable participation in occupations that foster their self-efficacy and mental wellbeing. During the self-quarantine period, the programme was accessed frequently, with viewers spanning from practicing therapists to the general public. Findings from WeChat analytics and follow up interviews with programme viewers suggested that internet-based health promotion programme can be effective in places where internet is commonly used by the general public.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"77 1","pages":"6 - 9"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1821499","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48922532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to address the disconnection experienced by clients engaging with services during a global pandemic, an approach to online working which emphasises the therapeutic use of self has been developed. An online platform has been used to build a psychoeducation course which relies heavily on the therapist's use of self-disclosure and equal participation in a community of learners. The work is currently in the pilot stage with a small number of patients but initial responses appear positive; further analysis will be possible as clients begin to complete the course.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"77 1","pages":"16 - 19"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1824752","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43240859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Educational programmes are suddenly expected to shift to e-learning strategies in the delivery of educational instructions. This case report provides a critical reflection on an occupational therapy (OT) programme’s e-learning preparedness survey of its stakeholders. Implications on the stakeholders’ readiness and confidence in e-learning as it relates to their mental health are discussed. The paper concludes with a recommendation for OT programmes to use its str in supporting its stakeholders’ transition to an – learning environment to mitigate any associated mental health-related issues and promote full participation within this new environment.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"79 1","pages":"4 - 8"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1836791","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43022796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This appeal is based on evidence from (1) searches for the history of education in England in the 1970s and for the start of the profession across the world; (2) examining the websites of five transnational organisations and four national associations for archives and history in contemporary policies; and (3) scanning the scopes and indexes of 18 journals for history and accounts published in 2019. Sadly, little was found. History is not a research priority and rarely mentioned in journal scopes. The reliance on English language information in the public domain is an important limitation of this exploratory study. The proposals include making history mainstream and valuing our heritage as the source of profession specific knowledge and values. These conditions fit into our reality under the COVID-19 pandemic. This experience related to myself and my field of work as an instructor of occupational therapy at the Arab American University in Palestine. There are students that I teach that have not been accustomed to distance learning through online courses using social media, especially zoom. This unfamiliar situation provided an opportunity for my students and myself to re-think the cases we deal with and the methods that we typically use, especially those people with spinal cord injuries. Here, I started creating an educational unit for students, in order to answer the questions posed by students. How can we provide an occupational therapy service under quarantine because of the COVID-19 pandemic? In what ways are patients suffering in the same way that we are suffering from the coronavirus pandemic? How can I adapt my teaching strategies methods to achieve the goals that I previously set for my students’ education before the pandemic?","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"76 1","pages":"103 - 107"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1825274","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46926726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social inequalities in the country are worsening and telehealth was only increased after the pandemic was installed. The aim of this article is to reflect and discuss telehealth in occupational therapy, presenting the techniques, themes and research in the initial phase on supporting groups for adults. Online social networks were used to invite and organise interested people. Virtual meetings are happening twice a week by video call and in addition we are also supporting chat through a WhatsApp group. People are reporting improvements in daily routines, personal relationships and anxiety. The most common themes are about everyday life, life history, difficulty in sleeping, eating, socialising with the same people 24 h a day, childhood trauma, politics and gender violence. We understand the important role of occupational therapy in analysis and intervention in people's life to reduce the risk of emotional distress, suffering and mental illness.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"76 1","pages":"75 - 77"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1818048","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42495690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the Philippines, community quarantine was imposed to contain its spread. With occupational therapy education one of those greatly affected by the disruption, the voices of occupational therapy educators and occupational therapy students were essential in informing the actions needed to support the practice. This case report presents key themes that emerged from the online discussion, reflective journal entries, and a survey completed by faculty members and students. Findings reflect a health and safety concern by both educators and students. Also, as there is a shift to online classrooms, occupational therapy education programmes are presented with a need to brush up on efficient content delivery and assessment methods fit for the virtual context and its accessibility for all. More so, occupational therapy educators are also presented with the responsibility of supporting each other’s mental health and those of their students.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"76 1","pages":"108 - 115"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1805202","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41659075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
