Various approaches are available to control cyanobacterial blooms in which Hydrogen Peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) emerges as a noteworthy environmentally safe oxidizing agent selectively inhibiting the growth of cyanobacteria and leaving no residue. The objective of this study was to assess how different concentrations of H 2 O 2 (1, 2, and 4 mg L -1 ) affect the growth of unicellular Microcystis aeruginosa and filamentous Sphaero-spermopsis aphanizomenoides cultures obtained from inland waters in Türkiye and to compare the effectiveness of H 2 O 2 application in monocultures and mixed cultures. For this purpose, the experimental setups were conducted in 96-well microtiter plates with eight replicates, and the growth of cultures during the experiment was monitored by measuring cell optical density at 665 nm (OD 665 ). The results showed that 1 mg L -1 H 2 O 2 had a significant effect on the growth of monocultures of Microcystis with cell densities of 100x10 3 cell mL -1 (p<0.05) and Sphaerospermopsis with 50x103 cell mL -1 . The cell growth of Microcystis cultures with higher densities declined at 4 mg L -1 H 2 O 2 addition, significantly. However, 4 mg L -1 H 2 O 2 dosage was effective up to 200x10 3 cell mL -1 Sphaeros-permopsis . In the mixtures of these species, 2 mg L -1 H 2 O 2 application was effective to suppress the tested cell densities in the case of Microcystis dominance.","PeriodicalId":52866,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences and Engineering","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135395743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These animals also serve as a base trophic level, acting as a source of food for many other aquatic organisms including fish and salamanders. Obtaining baseline data for monitoring aquatic insects and subsequent river health is vital to understand food chains and river ecological interactions. We sampled macroinvertebrate communities in two streams in the Oconaluftee River basin, in the Cherokee Qualla, North Carolina. Over 600 macroinvertebrates were collected and identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible, providing a macroinvertebrate profile of both riffle and run habitats. We identified over 35 genera and report on functional feeding groups, with biotic indices of water quality. Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera values varied, 21% and 65.43% for Raven’s Fork and 22% and 79.06% for the Oconaluftee rivers. This macroinvertebrate community suggests healthy stream aquatic insects and above average water quality, in spite of the urban land use found in the riparian zones of the sample sites. This research can be used as a base-line for future monitoring of aquatic streams in the area of the Cherokee Qualla.","PeriodicalId":52866,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences and Engineering","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47163429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article explores the essential role that aquaculture plays in the conservation of these critically endangered fish, the replenishing of the natural population, fulfilling the expanding demand and possibilities for caviar markets, and reducing pressure on fisheries’ catch. It also reviews the history of controlled breeding programs designed to supplement wild Caspian Sea populations, the possibilities for sturgeon aquaculture production, and the worldwide caviar trade industry in the coming years. Globally, the successful and profitable expansion of captive sturgeon farming over the last three decades has fulfilled the consumer market's demand for caviar and meat, resulting in a considerable decline in the global caviar price. Given the presence of successful sturgeon farming in the Arabian Gulf region (Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates), the prospect of introducing the sturgeon farming industry in Egypt is underlined. In comparison to other nations in the region, Egypt has excellent prospects for establishing such an aquaculture business, as Egypt's aquaculture sector is by far the largest in Africa and the sixth largest internationally. Furthermore, the availability of qualified workers, the diversity of water sources, and Egypt's moderate climate and environment increase the likelihood of successful sturgeon farming.","PeriodicalId":52866,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences and Engineering","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46618343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to explore sea cucumber export trends in Türkiye for the first time using annual series data. Export-related information has been compiled from official data records and interviews with the managers of exporting companies. The data set includes the sea cucumber export process in Türkiye, export destinations, temporal shifts in export, and export tendency according to Harmonized System codes. Türkiye is in a competitive and advantageous position in the global market. This study has revealed that the export of sea cucumber products from Türkiye has performed well and seems to have grown well over the years, mainly when exporting to high-demand countries. Investing in the sea cucumber sector will also pay off through long-run economic growth and development. COVID-19, high commodity prices and inflation, and the Rus-sia-Ukraine conflict have been identified as problems in sea cucumber exports. To reach long-term export targets, Türkiye should develop trading policies toward export performance and sustainable stock management. Maintaining exports in high-value-added markets and increasing financial support for exporters have been determined as the fundamental elements of these policies.","PeriodicalId":52866,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences and Engineering","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45507513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focuses on quantifying the morphological changes in terms of river planform parameters namely channel width, channel length, channel area, and sinuosity, as well as erosion and accretion rates. Multi-temporal satellite images were collected and analyzed to recognize the quinquennial and seasonal alterations. With the quantification of the spatial extent and rates of bank-line alterations by means of remote sensing, the purpose is to better understand the erosion and accretion processes of the Binahaan River from the perspective of its planform parameters. Throughout the study period, the river experienced significant morphological changes in planform; however, no consistent trend was found due to the dynamic nature of the river. The seasonal and quinquennial erosion and accretion rates of the river were also analyzed. It was found that the right bank line was more susceptible to erosion and accretion. Seasonally, the river was more prone to sediment accumulation which led to the narrowing of channel widths and decreasing channel area. In the quinquennial comparison during the dry seasons, the river was mostly dominated by erosion, while during wet seasons, the river was more prone to accretion. In terms of change in the area, whether by loss or gain of land, the river consistently displayed increasing change from 2000 to 2020. The results of this study could be utilized to develop an integrated strategy for its management and restore the fundamental processes that shape and maintain the river.","PeriodicalId":52866,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences and Engineering","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43705717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, sand pits and sand extraction activities in the Karasu River threaten the spawning areas of A. tarichi . This study aimed to investigate how increased sediment concentration in the Karasu River affects the eggs and larvae of A. tarichi during the reproductive period. The study in the laboratory was designed by measuring total suspended solids and turbidity associated with the river over two years for five different experimental groups (corresponding to 0, 10, 50, 100, and 600 mg L -1 , and associated groups: control group, Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, and Group 4, respectively). The percentage of hatched out larvae was statistically different between the groups (p<0.05). The highest percentages of hatched out larvae were found in the control group (73.98±5.89%) and Group 1 (68.05±2.96%). The highest survival rates in larvae were determined in the control group (53.35±5.62%) and Group 1 (44.98±4.41%). These results demonstrate that A. tarichi is sensitive to suspended solid concentrations that are very common in the natural environment. In conclusion, sand pits and sand extraction activities must be stopped completely during the reproductive period of A. tarichi between May and July and strict controls should be put in place during this time. These measures will provide an important contribution to ensuring the continuity of this species.","PeriodicalId":52866,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences and Engineering","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41547349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
