Girwa (Geog. Lat. 24.58° N, Geog. Long. 73.6962° E) is a part of southern Aravali hills wherein 28% of the population belongs to the primitive tribal groups such as the Bheels, Meena, Gameti and Rawat. Since, animal husbandry is the main economic activity for tribal people of southern Aravali zone; it is important to study current animal health care system in the region. It was in this context that the PRA exercise was done as a pilot study to document, rapidly assess, and promote ethnoveterinary practices. The field work conducted in 15 villages and on 3742 animals which were being reared by the community under study to support agriculture and for milk purpose . A total 26 animal diseases in which ethnoveterinary practices were resorted to and 15 ethno-veterinary medicinal plants were identified as part of the study.","PeriodicalId":52568,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70629929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results showed that the addition of CLE to ghee resulted in significant changes in the L*, a*, and b* values, likely due to the extraction of chlorophyll molecules during CLE preparation. Deep frying caused a decrease in L* values and an increase in a* and b* values of ghee, as well as an increase in the redness and yellowness indices, with control ghee experiencing the most significant changes. The viscosity of ghee increased during frying, and the increase was less in ghee with added antioxidants. Antioxidant-added ghee showed the least increase in total polar compounds (TPC) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) during frying, which are indicators of oil degradation. CLE and BHA were found to inhibit the production of Cholesterol Oxidation Products (COPs) in ghee during deep frying for up to 45 minutes. Control ghee showed the presence of both COPs (5α, 6α-epoxide and 7β-hydroxy cholesterol) after 45 minutes of frying, whereas ghee with added CLE and BHA had only 5α, 6α-epoxide after 45 minutes of frying.","PeriodicalId":52568,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences","volume":"16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70629992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concentration of the extract was selected initially on the basis of phytochemical and antioxidant activities of MLE. The total phenolics and flavonoid content of MLE was 72.16 ± 1.80mg GAE/mL and 12.65 ± 0.83 mg QE/mL of MLE. Analysis of the antioxidant activity of MLE was expressed in terms of IC50 (half maximal inhibitory concentration) value and four best concentrations having antioxidant activity greater than that of the IC50 concentration were selected. IC50 concentration obtained for MLE was 4.60 ±0.20 per cent and 5, 10, 15 and 20 per cents of MLE were selected, having antioxidant activities of 52.22± 1.09, 71.50± 2.23, 82.53± 1.84 and 87.30±1.46 per cents, respectively. Freshly prepared cold MLE solutions were used for dipping of quail carcass for five minutes against cold distilled water as negative control and cold water with synthetic antioxidants (BHA and BHT) as positive control. Sensory evaluation of the raw and cooked quail meat was conducted. No significant difference (p>0.05) was observed. between treatments and controls in the sensory parameters of raw quail carcasses. But there was a significant (p<0.05) difference in sensory attributes of cooked quail carcasses. Carcasses treated with 20 per cent MLE had lower flavour values and overall acceptability scores compared to other treatments and controls. The results indicated that dipping of quail carcasses in MLE (upto 15 per cent) had higher sensory scores and it can be used as a natural antioxidant without affecting the sensory quality.","PeriodicalId":52568,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences","volume":"39 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70630131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the prevalence of this organism in the gut microbiota of all warm-blooded animals, the chance of contamination is more through animal products. The present study was conducted to assess the occurrence of Campylobacter spp. in milk and beef of central Kerala. A total of 200 beef and 200 raw cow milk samples were collected from various retail outlets and milk societies of Thrissur and Ernakulam districts. Campylobacter spp. were isolated by conventional culture technique on Modified charcoal-cefoperazone-deoxycholate agar. A molecular technique targeting the genusspecific 16S rRNA gene further confirmed the culture and biochemically positive isolates. The species-specific mapA and ceuE genes were targeted for C. jejuni and C. coli, respectively. None of the milk samples collected were positive for Campylobacter spp. However, three per cent of beef samples were tested positive for Campylobacter spp.","PeriodicalId":52568,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136301813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The common hazards faced by veterinarians during practice can be categorised as physical, chemical, biological, psychological and ergonomic. Albeit the hazards require much attention in safeguarding the health of veterinarians, there has been a dearth in comprehensive studies regarding this issue in Kerala. Hence, the study was envisaged to identify the physical hazards among veterinarians working in Kerala and to assess practices regarding physical hazards. A well-structured questionnaire was designed based on three group discussions with veterinarians and the relevancy of the survey questions were then assessed by experts. The questionnaire was circulated among the veterinarians working in the Animal Husbandry department using google form. A total of 399 veterinarians from across Kerala responded to the questionnaire used for the study. The results from the study revealed that majority of the veterinarians were exposed to the physical hazards while handling the animals for treatment (83.70 per cent), kicking by animals (82.20 per cent), back pain resulted during large animal treatment procedures(80.95 per cent) and injuries to lower extremities (72.93 per cent) and the most common procedure that resulted in physical exhaustion was dystocia (94. 73 per cent). The study revealed that appropriate handling technique was chosen by majority of the respondents (90.22 per cent) as measure to prevent physical hazards at workplace. As it is practically impossible to prevent exposure to physical hazards, continued education and training to a great extent can help minimise the physical hazard exposure among veterinarians.","PeriodicalId":52568,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136301820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though, PCV-2 has many disease manifestations, the objective of the current study was to investigate the cutaneous and renal lesions in PCV-2 infected cases. Swine carcasses presented for post-mortem examination with a history of skin lesions, inappetance, dyspnoea and diarrhoea, during September 2021 to April 2022 from different parts of Kerala were utilised in this study. The samples were collected and screened with Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) after which, histological and immunohistochemical examination were performed. Three samples were found positive for PCV-2 out of 25 samples using PCR. Microscopically, skin revealed congestion, haemorrhages and infiltration of mononuclear infiltration cells and neutrophils in dermis and spongiosis in epidermis. Kidney revealed haemorrhages, congestion, tubular necrosis and degenerative alterations, interstitial mononuclear cell infiltration with occasional glomerulitis and vasculitis in the renal pelvis. Localisation of PCV-2 antigen was observed in renal tissue and lymph node with immunohistochemistry. Altogether, these findings were suggestive of porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS) in pigs. These results indicate the importance of including PCV-2 in the differential diagnosis of cutaneous lesions caused by bacterial and viral etiologies in pigs.","PeriodicalId":52568,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136303950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Poultry, being the natural reservoir, can harbour large number of Campylobacter in their caeca. The current study was carried out to assess the occurrence of thermophilic Campylobacter spp. in different meat type breeds in an organised farm. Out of the 120 cloacal swabs analysed, 31.67 per cent were found to be positive for Campylobacter spp. There was no significant difference in occurrence of Campylobacter spp. between different meat breeds. On molecular confirmation, majority of the isolates (71.05 per cent) were identified as Campylobacter jejuni and the rest as Campylobacter coli (28.95 per cent). The present study confirms a substantial degree of Campylobacter contamination in meat type chicken breeds in the farm. Good hygienic practices with better biosecurity measures and periodic screening of live poultry, poultry meat and its products are necessary to reduce the foodborne transmission of this pathogen to ensure safer food for consumers.","PeriodicalId":52568,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136304276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The isolated fungus was identified as Aspergillus tamarii using morphological characteristics and by comparative nucleotide sequence analysis of ITS regions. Fragments covering the region encoding ITS-1, 5.8S rDNA, and ITS-2 were amplified using the universal primers, ITS1 (TCCGTAGGTGAACCTGCGG) and ITS2 (TCCTCCGCTTATTGATATGC). The results of bioassays against early second instar larva showed dose-dependent mortality. Larvicidal activity was carried out at eight different concentrations viz, 1x106, 1x107, 1x108, 2x106, 2x107, 2x108, 3x106, 3x107, and 3x108 spores/ml. Among the two different methods of bioassays, bait method showed highest mortality. Beauveria bassiana was used as a positive control. Tween 80 (0.05%) was used as negative control. Larval mortality commences from day 3 until pupation in both bait and immersion methods. The least LC50 value observed for bait method was 5.28x107 spores/ml followed by immersion method, 5.12x109 spores/ml. On the other hand, the larva treated with commercial fungal strain, Beauveria bassiana showed an LC50 value of 1.26x108 spores/ml and 1.32x108 spores/ml for bait and immersion methods, respectively. Visual observation of mycosis was noticed on treated larva. Treated larvae had extensive growth of fungal hyphae on the larval surface. Scanning Electron Microscopy studies of treated larvae clearly showed the process of fungal infection. Longitudinal section of the treated larva showed fungal hyphae on the haemocoel.","PeriodicalId":52568,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136304289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
