The objective of our study is to improve current knowledge on BD by analysing the status quo of BD in practice. Therefore, we conduct a descriptive quantitative empirical study on a cross-industry basis with 352 German companies. Specifically, the analysis focuses on understanding, activities, organisation, people, instruments as well as challenges and future relevance of BD. Our results indicate that BD is understood as the search for growth opportunities in four key dimensions: products, processes, markets and/or business models. It has top management access, highly skilled people with diverse backgrounds, who mainly apply instruments found in management literature. Main challenges in BD result from a paucity of human and financial resources. Yet in the future, BD is of increasing relevance for firms.","PeriodicalId":52480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management","volume":"22 1","pages":"4-32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45628516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The literature on VSEs considers that owner-managers play an important role in the strategic orientation of their enterprise. While we join this stream of literature, our article highlights the role of this rarely analysed factor. We studied several cases in order to illustrate the effects of the owner-manager's professional identity. The two VSEs studied are pharmacies – an activity sector that is atypical and unstable. The analysis of these contrasting cases shows they adopt different strategies that depend on whether they attach more importance to the 'health professional' or 'retailer' dimension of their job. By combining professional identity with 'owner-managers', this research illustrates the importance of conceptions of 'the job' on strategic behaviour.","PeriodicalId":52480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management","volume":"22 1","pages":"152-165"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49217003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Spin-offs' business development relies on the design and renewal of an adequate business model, effective open innovation, and advanced knowledge management. This study describes the initial and further business development of a successful spin-off, MEMS&Co, through a longitudinal case study. The business model benefited from specific revenue/investments streams from clients and was subsequently supplemented by new business models in novel applications. Open innovation offered a unique outside-in process from universities, suppliers, and research centres and then transformed into an advanced new process. Knowledge management focused on cross-technical knowledge modularity and subsequently on knowledge recombination.","PeriodicalId":52480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management","volume":"22 1","pages":"103-125"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41981671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Visual management (VM) is one of the most efficient and widely used tools and techniques in LM in addition to other techniques like 5S, Kaizen, just-in-time, etc. Lean has been introduced in Vietnam for more than ten years, but few enterprises have applied and attained significant achievement. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the barriers to VM implementation in small- and medium-sized enterprise (SMEs) in Vietnam. In this study, in-depth semi-structured interviews, surveys, plant visit (factory tour) and, in some cases, observed managers' statements and conversations with blue-collar workers are used to collect relevant data. Based on the results, a VM model which consists of five main factors including human mindset, employee participation, board of management's long-term commitment, training program, and reward/punishment policy, is proposed for further development of LM in SMEs in Vietnam.","PeriodicalId":52480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management","volume":"21 1","pages":"509-529"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46543499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We identified the main themes addressed in the field and the main authors, works and citations, in addition to analysing a co-citation map and determining whether the term 'social innovation' depends on the field of innovation. The results show that the most commonly cited key words are 'innovation' and 'social entrepreneurism', demonstrating their complementarity. The number of citations has grown in recent years, demonstrating an opportunity to conduct academic studies in the field and an opportunity to conduct quantitative studies, given that the articles examined in this study were theoretical and qualitative in nature. Apparently, innovation is not the main field in which this theme is analysed; rather, institutional theory, social entrepreneurship and public policy constitute the main theoretical framework found in this work.","PeriodicalId":52480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management","volume":"21 1","pages":"459-484"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43414827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines the effect of one such institutional structure, the Czech Accelerator program, in developing entrepreneurial activity and innovation in Czech participating firms. Using a questionnaire and follow up interviews with participants, interviews with Czech Accelerator program and archival data sources, this study provides evidence to the facilitative role of an accelerator on the front end of innovation in firms participating with the accelerator's program. However, the data does not provide any evidence of growth in revenues, growth in sales, or securing venture funding by firms participating in the accelerator's program. These findings have implications for policymakers and business leaders in the Czech Republic and other middle-income economies to support their innovation and entrepreneurial activity.","PeriodicalId":52480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management","volume":"21 1","pages":"530-552"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45962664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper explores the development of a cluster-based and quantitative measurement system for science and technology parks to evaluate the performance of technology-based ventures. The proposed method incorporates technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and weight allocation. It ranks the technology-based ventures in different technological clusters, based on a range of indicators pertinent to productivity, research and development (R&D) effort, R&D personnel percentage, time to market and financial performance. This method has been implemented through a trial study conducted within the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. The results indicate that R&D spending has a strong impact on a company's performance ranking. The performance of technology-based ventures should be measured with respect to their R&D investments and their pertinent efforts to commercialise products.","PeriodicalId":52480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management","volume":"21 1","pages":"485-508"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44836671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this way, academics become potential entrepreneurs or, as they are called in the business literature, intrapreneurs. Taking into account that the theories regarding planned behaviour consider intention as the main antecedent of behaviour, the aim of this paper is to test the influence that certain variables - demographic, psychological and those relating to the environment - have on the intention of academics in Spanish universities to create a spin-off. After conducting a survey of 1,178 academics from all fields of knowledge, the results show that the variables influencing this intention to be an entrepreneur are entrepreneurial personality, gender, academic experience and the entrepreneurial abilities of the individual, as well as the perceived utility of being an entrepreneur, the assessment of the economic environment and the productivity of their research group in terms of patents and articles published. Identifying the profile of the academics with the greatest entrepreneurial intention can help to guide university policy in matters of transferring knowledge and promoting spin-offs as an alternative way of commercialising research findings.","PeriodicalId":52480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management","volume":"21 1","pages":"299-317"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43882037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clay-fired brick making is a prominent MSME sub-sector in India that has not experienced any significant technological change. Zig-zag firing technology, a cleaner production initiative, introduced in the brick making process in the 1970s did not diffuse then, but is increasingly finding its way now after about four decades. This paper attempts to understand the factors that influence adoption of cleaner production innovation by MSME units, focusing on a specific brick making cluster in eastern India. Structured interviews were carried out in the field with 42 brick kiln owners, representing 18% of all brick kiln owners in the cluster. The results of the findings support the idea that external factors that help in creating an enabling environment and the characteristics of brick kiln entrepreneurs play an important role in the diffusion of new technology.","PeriodicalId":52480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management","volume":"21 1","pages":"441-457"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43516823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Growth, however, is a highly debated and controversial performance measure for small businesses. Analysing the special growth patterns of RBSOs, the existing literature has put forward two extreme forms, Gazelles and Mice, with metaphorical characteristics. Drawing on a database of 177 spin-offs from publicly funded non-university research institutes, we investigate the specifics of those firms with an above-average growth rate and contrast them to their stagnating counterparts, trying to characterise Gazelles and Mice and explain the growth patterns with more detail in order to identify the potential for high growth rates as early as possible.","PeriodicalId":52480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management","volume":"21 1","pages":"343-365"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45150294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
