The main assumption of the program is the systematic assessment of the condition of hearing in athletes with various levels of intellectual disability. Aim: The aim of the study is to present the results of hearing screening tests of Polish competitors participating in Special Olympics in comparison to the results obtained from the same tests of foreign sportsmen. Material and methods: This is a retrospective, multicenter study describing 8 years of hearing screening in athletes with intellectual disabilities. The study includes a group of 9,405 players aged between 7 and 69, with intellectual disabilities of various degrees, participating in national and international sports competitions in 2009–2016. The group size of Polish competitors is 863, and the group of competitors from other countries (OWHOC) is 8,542. The assessment is based on the study of otoacoustic emission, tympanometry, and tonal audiometry. Results: Otoacoustic emission tests of Polish competitors revealed normal results for 17.3% in the right ear and 14.4% in the left ear. The results were similar for the group of foreign players: right ear – 15.1% and left ear – 11.7%. A correct tympanometry result was obtained for the right ear in 61.5%, and the left ear in 57.5% of Polish competitors. Foreign competitors obtained 69.5% of correct tympanometry results on both sides. The audiometric norm (0–20 dB) was obtained in the right ear in 16.7%, and in the left ear in 15.2% of Polish athletes. Foreigners obtained the correct result of audiometric examination on the right in 13.5%, and on the left in 11.5% of cases. Conclusions: The research indicates more frequent hearing disorders in people with intellectual disabilities compared to the population of people without disabilities. Conductive hearing loss is more frequent in comparison to non-disabled population. Screening of athletes participating in Special Olympics represents an important element in improving their health potential. The Healthy Hearing Program allows to train medical staff to effectively communicate with people with disabilities, as well as to run practical audiological examinations. It also allows to examine Special Olympics players, analyze their test results, and identify athletes with disabilities who require further assistance and help. The results of Polish athletes compared to foreign ones are similar.\u0000\u0000","PeriodicalId":52362,"journal":{"name":"Polish Otorhinolaryngology Review","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71285722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a relatively new disease, diagnosis of COVID-19 is highly problematic and because of non-specific symptoms the infection must be confirmed with molecular tests. Aim: Evaluation of the most common COVID-19 symptoms and statistical analysis of obtained data in order to confirm significant correlations between symptoms and age and sex of the examined patients. Material and methods: A questionnaire has been carried out among 751 patients of Center for Blood Donation in Gdansk and the Department of Otolaryngology in Gdansk. The patients were convalescents after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The presence of virus was confirmed by a positive PCR test of RNA of the SARS-CoV-2 virus of each patent. The study has been carried out since the beginning of the presence of COVID-19 in Pomerania region till April 2021. Results: Results of the questionnaires presented the most common general and otolaryngological symptoms of COVID-19. Collected data was statistically analyzed. Patients were divided according to age and sex. 30.2% of patients had severe clinical course of infection, 69.8% had mild clinical course. The most common general symptom associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection was fatigue, which was more common among women. Other common symptoms were loss of smell and taste, also more common among women, and muscle and joint pain. The most common other otolaryngological symptoms were sore throat and vertigo, all more frequent in men. Conclusion: The study presents the correlation between incidence of COVID-19 disease symptoms and age and sex of patients. Fatigue, loss of smell and taste and muscle and joint pain were the most common symptoms of the infection. Presented data highlights the meaning of further research on COVID-19 symptoms.","PeriodicalId":52362,"journal":{"name":"Polish Otorhinolaryngology Review","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71286185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is part of a system that, in addition to the already mentioned elements, also includes the soft palate. The functions of ET are pressure equalization, clearance of secretions and protection of the middle ear from sounds and reflux of secretions from the nasopharynx. Dysfunctions of ET are multifactorial, and the diagnostics is difficult due to lack of defined standards for assessing its function prior and post treatment. Aim: The aim of the study is the review of the publications concerning actual definitions and classification of ET dysfunctions, efforts of adopting unified criteria and methods of assessing its functions and ways of treatment. Material and methods: In the year 2015 classification was adopted which distinguish three subtypes of ET dysfunction: (1) dilatory ET dysfunction, (2) baro-challenge-induced, (3) patulous ET. Dilatory ET dysfunctions were further divided as follows: functional obstruction (most common), dynamic dysfunction and anatomical obstruction. The Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Questionnaire (ETDQ-7) enables the systematization of symptoms. Clinical assessment of the patient with ET dysfunction should include otoscopy or otomicroscopy, tympanometry, Rinnes and Webers tuning fork tests or pure tone audiometry, nasopharyngoscopy with visualization of ET orifice and opening. Other tests of assessment of ET functions like tubomanometry, sonotubomanometry and pressure chamber tests are useful research tools. Endoscopic evaluation of ET orifice should encompass the assessment of mucosa of the torus tubarius and ET as well as dynamic process of ET opening. In surgical treatment of functional obstructions of ET, the most common method is balloon dilatation tuboplasty. Several studies showed that this is safe and in high percentage of cases successful method of treatment, however the indications for this type of surgery are not yet universally accepted.","PeriodicalId":52362,"journal":{"name":"Polish Otorhinolaryngology Review","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71286013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
