A total of 169 prostate cancer patients who underwent resection were included and followed up for 3 years. Then anxiety and depression were assessed by Zung's Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) or Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) from the day of discharging from hospital to the last follow up every 3 months. Overall survival (OS) was calculated and documented. In prostate cancer survivors post-resection, the SAS score, anxiety occurrence rate, SDS score and depression occurrence rate all gradually elevated from baseline to month 36. Multivariate logistic regression analysis disclosed that age ≥ 65 years, education duration<9 years, marry status of single/divorced/widowed, unemployment before surgery, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, higher Gleason score, higher pathological T stage, higher pathological N stage, positive surgical margin status were independent factors related to higher anxiety risk in the 3 years follow-up duration. Additionally, unemployment before surgery, hyperlipidemia, higher pathological T stage, higher pathological N stage, positive surgical margin status were independently associated with depression risk in the 3 years follow-up duration. In addition, baseline anxiety, baseline depression, 1-year depression and 2-year depression associated with worse OS. In conclusion, post-resection anxiety and depression continuously worsen in prostate cancer survivors, and age, marriage status, education duration, complications, and tumor features can serve as their risk factors.
","PeriodicalId":520814,"journal":{"name":"The Psychiatric quarterly","volume":" ","pages":"995-1009"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/s11126-020-09869-5","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"38790413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is little research about psychiatric complications in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The aim of the study was to describe the psychiatric clinical profile and pharmacological interactions in COVID-19 inpatients referred to a Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (CLP) unit. This is a cross-sectional study, carried out at a tertiary hospital in Spain, in inpatients admitted because of COVID-19 and referred to our CLP Unit from March 17,2020 to April 28,2020. Clinical data were extracted from electronic medical records. The patients were divided in three groups depending on psychiatric diagnosis: delirium, severe mental illness (SMI) and non-severe mental illness (NSMI). Of 71 patients included (median [ICR] age 64 [54-73] years; 70.4% male), 35.2% had a delirium, 18.3% had a SMI, and 46.5% had a NSMI. Compared to patients with delirium and NSMI, patients with SMI were younger, more likely to be institutionalized and were administered less anti-COVID19 drugs. Mortality was higher among patients with delirium (21.7%) than those with SMI (0%) or NSMI (9.45%). The rate of side effects due to interactions between anti-COVID19 and psychiatric drugs was low, mainly drowsiness (4.3%) and borderline QTc prolongation (1.5%). Patients affected by SMI were more often undertreated for COVID-19. However, the rate of interactions was very low, and avoidable with a proper evaluation and drug-dose adjustment. Half of the patients with SMI were institutionalized, suggesting that living conditions in residential facilities could make them more vulnerable to infection.
","PeriodicalId":520814,"journal":{"name":"The Psychiatric quarterly","volume":" ","pages":"1021-1033"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/s11126-020-09868-6","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"38791448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Things which were identified as changing significantly during this period included: service via telehealth; working from home, split teams (to reduce infection risk), and social (physical) distancing. An online survey of clinicians was conducted involving both closed and open ended questions. Service staff identified significant benefits from the changes to the way services were delivered as well as some impediments and challenges. Advantages in the new way of working revolved around the flexibility of the virtual service, with appointments online enabling families to more easily overcome issues of transport, work commitments, childcare and disruption to routines and timing. The online platforms also enabled some family members to participate who otherwise might not have been able to come to appointments in person. Disadvantages included where there were issues with availability and access to appropriate technology or private spaces, or when the young person was very young, very unwell, unstable, isolated or at higher risk. This study suggests that telehealth and flexible working arrangements have become an essential new element in the clinicians' toolkit to be offered either alone or as a supplement to in person interventions.
","PeriodicalId":520814,"journal":{"name":"The Psychiatric quarterly","volume":" ","pages":"1259-1270"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/s11126-021-09909-8","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"25518884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While it is well-recognized that there are several barriers to even obtaining treatment for depression, once an individual obtains treatment they may not receive the type of care that they need. In order to examine common factors of those who experienced an unmet treatment need for depression despite seeking mental health treatment, we examined data from the 2018 National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). We cross-sectionally compared two groups of individuals who both met criteria for a past year Major Depressive Episode (MDE) and sought mental health treatment, however one group reported an unmet treatment need and the other did not. Results indicate a variety of personal identity and social factors associated with perceiving an unmet treatment need, including age, race/ethnicity, sexual attraction, marital status, poverty level, health insurance, substance misuse, global health, and role impairment. This study contributes to the literature by providing further support for disparities in depression treatment at the consumer, provider, and systemic levels that have downstream effects for health equity policy and public health promotion.
","PeriodicalId":520814,"journal":{"name":"The Psychiatric quarterly","volume":" ","pages":"1271-1281"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/s11126-021-09913-y","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"25522335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To date, most telepsychiatry studies have focused on specific populations or small groups of EDs. This study sought to examine the potential role of telepsychiatry across a wider range of EDs by comparing visit dispositions for psychiatric visits in EDs that did (versus did not) receive telepsychiatry services. ED telepsychiatry service status was identified from the 2016 National ED Inventory-USA and then linked to psychiatric visits from the 2016 New York State Emergency Department Databases/State Inpatient Databases. Unadjusted analyses and multivariable logistic regression models were used to evaluate associations between an ED's telepsychiatry service status and two clinical outcomes: use of observation services and ED visit disposition. Across all psychiatric ED visits, 712,236 were in EDs without telepsychiatry while 101,025 were in EDs with telepsychiatry. Most (99.8%) visits were in urban EDs. In multivariable logistic regression models, psychiatric visits in EDs with telepsychiatry services had lower odds (adjusted odds ratio 0.30) of using observation services compared to visits in EDs without telepsychiatry. The receipt of ED telepsychiatry is associated with lower usage of observation services for psychiatric visits, likely reducing the amount of time spent in the ED and mitigating the ongoing problem of ED crowding. An overwhelming majority of visits in EDs with telepsychiatry services were in urban hospitals with existing psychiatric services. Factors affecting the delivery and effectiveness of telepsychiatry services to hospitals lacking in psychiatric resources merit further investigation.
","PeriodicalId":520814,"journal":{"name":"The Psychiatric quarterly","volume":" ","pages":"1109-1127"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/s11126-021-09886-y","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"25370062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a cross-sectional, national datafile, 281 females and 282 males (20-64 years) who reported being diagnosed with BD were investigated using the Social Provisions Scale (SPS) and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10). It was found that females and males with BD had significantly lower SPS scores and significantly higher K10 scores than females and males without BD, females with BD perceive significantly higher overall support, as well as higher attachment and guidance compared to males with BD, and support in the form of social integration and was associated with decreased psychological distress for both males and females with BD. Furthermore, reassurance of worth was an additional predictor of decreased distress for males, while guidance was an additional predictor of decreased distress for females. Despite the limitations, which include self-reported diagnosis of BD and potential exclusion of those who are not diagnosed but have BD, these findings suggest that different types of social support may serve as protective factors for psychological distress among females and males with BD.
","PeriodicalId":520814,"journal":{"name":"The Psychiatric quarterly","volume":" ","pages":"1187-1199"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/s11126-021-09898-8","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"25424528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research on self-harming behaviors has identified emotion dysregulation, negative affect, and borderline pathology as strong risk factors of NSSI, whereas the potential protective effects of metacognitive skills such as decentering have not yet been explored. The current study combined ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and self-report measures to explore potential risk and protective factors of NSSI in a clinical group of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) patients with NSSI (N = 22), a subclinical group of college students with NSSI (N = 19), and a non-clinical healthy control group (N = 23). Participants completed self-report measures of borderline pathology, emotion dysregulation, decentering ability, and negative emotional symptoms, and they used the Sinjur App (EMA instrument) at least three times a day for 15 days to capture negative affect and NSSI in daily life. A multilevel mixed-effect regression analysis with both self-report and EMA measures was conducted to identify predictors of NSSI. The multilevel analysis showed that only momentary frustration directly predicted NSSI. Momentary guilt and anger only predicted NSSI when interacting with more stable traits of borderline pathology and negative emotional symptoms. Most importantly, greater decentering capacity protected against self-injury and attenuated the association between momentary sadness and NSSI. Findings contribute novel knowledge about NSSI, documenting the protective effects of decentering and highlighting the benefit of interventions that target metacognitive emotion regulation skills.
","PeriodicalId":520814,"journal":{"name":"The Psychiatric quarterly","volume":" ","pages":"1035-1054"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/s11126-020-09875-7","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"38844963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Differences in mentalizing performance between men and women, and the relationship between mentalizing deficits, cognitive impairment, symptoms, and global functioning of patients were also examined. A case-control study design was utilized (N = 95). Adults with schizophrenia were recruited from psychosocial rehabilitation clinics (n = 53) and healthy controls were recruited from the community (n = 42). Mentalizing was evaluated with the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition, an audiovisual measure with good ecological validity. Measures of cognitive functioning, symptoms, and global functioning were also administered. Patients exhibited significant mentalizing deficits. Specifically, patients made more undermentalizing errors and more no mentalizing errors compared with healthy controls. In patients and healthy controls, no differences were found between men and women in mentalizing abilities. In patients with schizophrenia, lower cognitive functioning (i.e., immediate and delayed verbal learning, verbal fluency, and processing speed) were associated with poorer mentalizing. In patients, processing speed explained 31% of the variance in total mentalizing errors and mentalizing deterioration was associated with poorer overall functioning. Psychosocial rehabilitation interventions in people with schizophrenia should consider mentalizing deficits (especially undermentalizing and no mentalizing difficulties) and their relationship with reduced processing speed in treatment delivery (e.g., direct and organized communication). Integration of treatments targeting mentalizing deficits in a psychosocial rehabilitation setting is recommended to improve functioning in schizophrenia.
","PeriodicalId":520814,"journal":{"name":"The Psychiatric quarterly","volume":" ","pages":"947-959"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/s11126-020-09863-x","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"38786230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
