It is widely recognized that the equitable distribution of fisheries access rights is key to the acceptability and effectiveness of such regulatory systems. This dimension, however, remains largely underexplored. We develop a practical approach to assess equity in fisheries management systems. Building on the conceptual foundations of the fisheries social contract, we define equity through a three-tiered framework and propose a scoring system for its evaluation. We empirically test the approach through a comparative analysis of the French and Spanish allocation regimes for the Bay of Biscay Hake (<i>Merluccius merluccius</i>) fishery. The findings highlight the importance of explicitly incorporating equity into fisheries governance alongside ecological and economic objectives.</p>","PeriodicalId":520523,"journal":{"name":"npj ocean sustainability","volume":"5 1","pages":"45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13541608/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148898880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To meet food and, especially, protein demand in the next few decades, the aquaculture industry needs to expand. This could be achieved by expanding marine aquaculture at sea. Moving aquaculture plots further offshore has gained interest due to its increased space availability and more stable conditions compared to coastal areas, while also mitigating the effects of climate change extremes inshore. Spatial multi-criteria evaluation allowed for the identification of regions in offshore European waters that, under present-day conditions, were both feasible and suitable for mussel cultivation (<i>Mytilus edulis</i> L.). Future climate models were also used and showed a latitudinal trend, making Northern European waters more suitable in the future, while the Southern part of Europe became too warm. However, the future impact of extreme events, such as marine heatwaves, is difficult to predict. In addition, the study identified offshore wind farms with potential for co-location with mussel cultivation, which could help concentrate human uses at sea and reduce the extent of marine areas subject to anthropogenic pressure. With the offshore wind industry expanding rapidly in the future, even more co-location options will become possible.</p>","PeriodicalId":520523,"journal":{"name":"npj ocean sustainability","volume":"5 1","pages":"20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13065476/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147680122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The issues around vulnerability are even more intense when it comes to transboundary fisheries systems. This study assesses the vulnerabilities of small-scale fisheries and the challenges in facilitating their transitions to viability in the transboundary Sundarbans mangrove forest shared between India and Bangladesh in the Bay of Bengal. Data were collected using household surveys, key informant interviews and focus group discussions. The results reveal that small-scale fisheries face diverse vulnerabilities sourced from social (e.g., reduced income and increased social injustices), natural (e.g., decreased fish stock) and governance systems (e.g., increased restrictions and limited access) of the forest. Several factors, for example, a lack of common governing action and mismatches of governance goals and implementation, cause barriers to transitions toward viability. The study suggests that increased participation of relevant stakeholders and their voices is crucial to make comprehensive governing actions from both sides of the forest and to facilitate the viability transitions.</p>","PeriodicalId":520523,"journal":{"name":"npj ocean sustainability","volume":"5 1","pages":"27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13193939/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148020431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We provide a framework for considering ecological connectivity in marine systems and evidence for ecological connectivity across temperate coastal seascapes, developed through expert consensus and structured review. We advocate a seascape approach, that restores connectivity and optimal structure-function relationships, is crucial for successful ecosystem restoration. Consequently, we provide recommendations to deliver seascape restoration of coastal habitats to support the targets set by the 2021-30 UN Decades of Ocean Science and Ecosystem Restoration. However, to be included in national NCS inventories, governments must first quantify the kelp-derived carbon stocks and fluxes leading to carbon sequestration. Here, we present a blueprint for assessing the national blue carbon capacity of kelp forests in which data synthesis and Bayesian hierarchical modeling enable estimates of kelp carbon production, storage, and export capacity from limited data. Applying this blueprint to Canada's extensive coastline, we estimate kelps hold 0.6 to 2.8 Tg C in short-term biomass, producing 1.1 to 6.2 Tg C yr<sup>-1</sup>, of which 0.04 to 0.4 Tg C yr<sup>-1</sup> could be exported to the deep ocean. While modest compared to terrestrial sinks, our findings suggest kelps have comparable carbon sequestration to marine and freshwater wetlands, warranting further consideration in Canada's NCS inventories. Our transparent, reproducible blueprint represents an important step towards accurate carbon accounting for kelp forests.</p>","PeriodicalId":520523,"journal":{"name":"npj ocean sustainability","volume":"4 1","pages":"30"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12137142/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144251854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
