Method: A total of 126 volunteer firefighters from two Humanitarian Associations participated, with a mean age of 36.06 years (SD = 12.46), the majority of participants is male (n = 84, 66.7%), is married (n = 53, 42.1%), has secondary education (n = 74, 58.7%), 83 (65.9%) receive a monthly income between €500 and €1000 and has been in the Association for more than 10 years as volunteers (n = 66, 52.4%). The instruments used were a sociodemographic characterization questionnaire and a scale composed of 17 statements elaborated by Ward and Mckillop (2011). Results: The scale has good psychometric characteristics (Cronbach' α = 0.83). In the \"Results\" we obtain the highest and lowest mean values — \"Altruistic - K\" indicator (M = 6.27, SD = 1.10) versus \"Needs - Q\" (M = 4.23, SD = 2.39). In the analysis of motivational variables, according to the sociodemographic characteristics, the indicators with the highest number of statistically significant differences are the \"Selfish\" of \"Human capital\" (H), the \"Altruistic\" (K, L, M) and the \"Need\" (O) of \"Results”. Discussion and Conclusions: The altruism is the dominant factor in explaining the behavior of volunteer firefighters, consistent with previous research on motivation for volunteering. However, when we disaggregate the analysis the results do not always coincide with those found in the literature. The sociocultural context and the specificities of the volunteers' own activity may be responsible for the differences found. Further comparative studies at the international level are necessary, and taking into account the specific characteristics of voluntary firefighter’s activity, namely the issue of risk.","PeriodicalId":52016,"journal":{"name":"Revista Portuguesa de Investigacao Comportamental e Social","volume":"3 1","pages":"42-51"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2017-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71286999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: The Portuguese version of the UWES was applied to a sample of 1369 Portuguese social workers, 94% of which female and 6% male, with an average age of 39 years (standard deviation = 8.99). The most frequent academic qualification is graduation (63.8%) and in terms of professional activity they had, in average terms, 12.99 years of experience (standard deviation = 8.28). The reliability of the scale was assessed using the Chronbach alpha coefficient and the validity using the exploratory factorial analysis. Quantitative methodological research was used. Results: The results obtained agree with the values presented in previous studies regarding their internal consistency, both of the 17 items that make up the scale and of its three dimensions (\"force\", \"dedication\" and \"absorption\"). The UWES-17 in this study presents a factorial structure of three factors, just like the original study, but the constitution of the items of each dimension is different. The UWES-17 scale presents good psychometric characteristics and good internal consistency. Conclusions: The UWES-17 scale presents good psychometric characteristics and good internal consistency.","PeriodicalId":52016,"journal":{"name":"Revista Portuguesa de Investigacao Comportamental e Social","volume":"3 1","pages":"10-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2017-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49395506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: A quantitative study with 353 users of the Family Health Strategy, attended in the eastern zone of the city of Teresina (PI, Brazil). The SERVQUAL scale, filled by an adapted instrument, was used with affirmative sentences and analyzed using multivariate techniques: factorial analysis and multiple regression. Results: The multivariate analysis allowed the reduction of the scale used for five dimensions of the quality of services provided, which accounted for the explanation of 99.7% of the variation of the general index calculated and employed in the multiple regression model. All the assumptions of both techniques were respected. Conclusion: Reliability was the preponderant dimension in the perception of the quality of services and the tested model was validated, making possible its replicas in other empirical contexts and the expansion of its scope.","PeriodicalId":52016,"journal":{"name":"Revista Portuguesa de Investigacao Comportamental e Social","volume":"3 1","pages":"2-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2017-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49457986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: A total of 360 women from the general population, aged between 18 and 50, participated in this study, by completing online self-report instruments to evaluate self-compassionate engagement and action, body appreciation, and symptoms of eating psychopathology. Descriptive and correlation analysis among the variables in the study were conducted. Additionally, it was tested a path analysis model that hypothesized that the association between self-compassionate actions and disordered eating behaviors was mediated by the ability to accept and appreciate one’s body image. Results: Results revealed positive associations between self-compassionate engagement and action and body appreciation and negative ones between body appreciation and symptoms of eating psychopathology. Path analysis’ results revealed a negative and indirect effect between self-compassionate actions and disordered eating, via body appreciation, which explained 48% of the variance of disordered eating behavior. Conclusions: Present results suggest that self-compassionate actions hold a protective effect on eating behavior through higher levels of respect and appreciation toward body image, despite body weight, shape, and imperfections. The ability to act following self-compassionate motivations seems to contribute to higher levels of body image appreciation, which reflects in a lower susceptibility to adopt disordered eating attitudes and behaviors. The present study seems to represent an important contribution to research and clinical practice and underlines the importance of including strategies to develop self-compassionate and body appreciation competencies in programs to prevent and intervene in the area of eating psychopathology.","PeriodicalId":52016,"journal":{"name":"Revista Portuguesa de Investigacao Comportamental e Social","volume":"3 1","pages":"32-41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2017-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71286937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to characterize the social personal networks of people with additive behavior and dependencies at risk of social exclusion or excluded.Method: Participated in this study 30 individuals with psychoactive substances use, aged between 24 and 65 years (M ± DP = 43,03 ± 10,10), most of them male (80,0%), with no source of income (46.7%) or supported by social policy measures (53.3%). The main substance of use is heroin (63.3%). We assessed the structural, functional and contextual-relational dimensions of their networks with the Social Personal Networks Analysis Tool.Results: The social networks of the participants are composed by 7 elements, in average, predominating the family members; they are fragmented, consisting essentially by members of the primary networks, although, the secondary networks represent about ¼ of the members. Reciprocity and the level of perceived social support are high, such as emotional and informational support. Most individuals report having members in the social network with drug abuse (77,0%), relationships that occupy more than 20,0% of the network size. We analyzed comparatively the networks according to material and shelter deprivation, and no significant differences emerged (p > 0,05), although the networks’ profiles suggest different strategies of support.Conclusions: The study confirms the relevance of social networks assessment in the population with addictive behaviors and dependencies. Social intervention planning should integrate the network characteristics that are relevant to support the reduction of substance abuse and associated risks, as well as the promotion of social well-being and citizenship.","PeriodicalId":52016,"journal":{"name":"Revista Portuguesa de Investigacao Comportamental e Social","volume":"3 1","pages":"14-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2017-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71286819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, for couples dealing with infertility this role can involve fertility treatments, and for some of them donor-assisted reproduction. For couples who use third party reproduction, another concern can emerge: tell the child about the donor conception, or preserve secrecy. Although arguments for decision-making have been studied, in Portugal research on this topic is scanty. Objectives: The current study sought out to develop the Motivations for Disclosing/Not Disclosing Non-genetic Parenthood through Gamete Donation (QMRDG), which is designed to assess motivations that influence the decision-making process of parents who use gamete donation regarding disclosure to his/her son/daughter his/her conception.Methods: This exploratory study was conducted in sample of 21 participants with age ranging from 30 to 49 years, who undergone third-party reproduction treatment and became parents. Participants completed a set of questionnaires through an online platform.Results: QMRDG revealed clear and comprehensible items. Data showed that most parents did not disclose to their child their donor conception due to the fact that the child is still very young, but their intention seems to be to disclose in the future. For parents who have disclosed, core motivations for that decision are based on the importance of honesty and on the right to know genetic origins. Concerning motivations for not disclosing the little importance given to genetics emerges as one of the most important ones.Discussion: The QMRDG can be a promising tool in clinical practice and research with people who are pursuing fertility treatment with gamete donation. In this investigation parent’s tendency was to disclose to child donor conception.","PeriodicalId":52016,"journal":{"name":"Revista Portuguesa de Investigacao Comportamental e Social","volume":"3 1","pages":"2-13"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2017-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48569243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Additionally, our goal was to test a theoretical model consisting of internal and relational factors. Method: Three hundred and forty-seven patients attending consultations at the Servico de Endocrinologia, Diabetes e Metabolismo of the Centro Hospitalar Universitario de Coimbra and at the Associacao Portuguesa de Diabeticos de Portugal. The self-report instruments were Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, WHOQOL-Bref, Escala de Satisfacao com o Suporte Social, Medida de Adesao aos Tratamentos, Attitudes Towards Doctors and Medicine, Beck Depression Inventory, Diabetes Health Profile e Questionario de Autocuidados da Diabetes. Exploratory factor analysis was used to assess the instrument's dimensionality with Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin and Bartlett’s Sphericity Test. Results: For type 1 DM the factor structure found included six components with a total explained variance of 70.8%. For type 2 DM (insulin treatment) seven components were found explaining a total variance of 74.9%. For type 2 diabetes (oral treatment) six factors accounting for 73.4% of the total explained variance were found. Conclusions: The highest component loadings were found in constructs that should theoretically belong to the corresponding factors. In the case of type 1 DM the therapeutic factor disappears, combining the self-care factor, and in the case of type 2 DM (oral), this component emerged as a dimension. A forced two-dimentional factor analysis indicated that social support load in internal factor. These findings led us to reflect on the suitability of the instrument for the assessment of social support, instead of the model itself. An explanation based on the multidimensionality of therapeutic adherence was achieved considering that internal structure and semantics conditioned our results.","PeriodicalId":52016,"journal":{"name":"Revista Portuguesa de Investigacao Comportamental e Social","volume":"49 1","pages":"41-52"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2017-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71286845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
