However, the increasing integration of renewable energy in rural areas necessitates additional 400kV lines. Despite the relatively small generation capacity, cost-effective designs with low audible noise are essential. This paper presents corona cage testing conducted to evaluate the audible noise performance of aged triple IEC 315 conductor bundles for 400kV applications. The results demonstrate the adequacy of using a 320mm sub-conductor spacing triple IEC 315 bundle for lines up to 1500m altitude, facilitating optimized designs.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"81 2","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are vital for the future growth of renewable energy systems because they provide varied grid support services including grid stability. Hence, managing the battery state of charge (SoC), is a very important aspect of maintaining its life and managing the variability of renewable energy sources (RESs). Therefore, this paper provides a review of SoC estimation methods including model-based and data-driven approaches. This area of research remains a research gap that requires continuous reporting to reflect the battery SoC true estimation. In addition, this review will help researchers, academics, engineers, and industry choose the most suitable SoC estimation approach for future applications with VRESs.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"77 6","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this case, the continuous energy output is that associated with renewable wind turbines and renewable solar power systems. The occurrence of seismic activity with low to moderate ground displacement is recognized to be a threat to the energy output from renewable energy systems. The research being presented in this paper addresses this challenge and proposes the incorporation of mobility in wind turbines and components of solar power systems. The mobility feature enables the components to be capable of changing location in response to harmful variation in the ground displacement in the surrounding region. Performance evaluation via simulation shows that the proposed mechanism enhances the solar power system and wind power system power output by an average of 49.3%, and 63.1%, respectively.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"7 4","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These field effects may influence the line configuration and height of new lines. Existing lines which cannot be easily modified, may require retroactive mitigation, particularly where communities have since been established near to the line. Monopolar lines such as Cahora-Bassa may produce more significant adverse effects than comparable bipolar lines due to the lack of mutual field cancellation between the poles and the absence of charge recombination. Shocks have been reported by residents when crossing underneath the negative polarity line of the Cahora-Bassa scheme. The adverse effects of high ion currents and fields can be reduced by the introduction of screening conductors underneath the line. The optimal selection of conductors and their position, as well as the practical implementation of such schemes, is investigated.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth comparison of various design options available for wind generators. These designs include a permanent magnet vernier generator (PMVG), a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), and a wound-rotor synchronous generator (WRSG). The study thoroughly evaluates various performance aspects, such as cost, efficiency, torque density, power factor, and ripple torque, to help make an informed decision when choosing the most appropriate generator structure for small-scale wind power applications. Evaluation of the designs is validated by comparing two-dimensional finite element results. The findings of this study provide valuable guidance in choosing a generator that is both high-performing and cost-effective for small-scale wind power generation.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
