In this paper, the cooling demand of an inland building in South Africa is predicted. Hourly historical data of weather and cooling energy was collected from Ninja for the year 2019 and subsequently analysed using Julia programming language. Initially, the pattern of features is analysed to establish a picture of their behaviour. These features are then used to train and test a regression model. The analysis shows that the data collected depicts accurately the situation in the inland of South Africa for cooling power requirements. Results of the regression analysis show that there is a need to segregate the data to enhance the accuracy of the model.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"34 5","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Assessing the integrity of power transformer winding is imperative as winding failure is the most dominant failure location. Based on the reported literature a common trend with the research work is that they only consider one machine learning method and do not use other existing methods as benchmarks to corroborate proposed approaches. In this work, a comparative analysis of two trained well known, and broadly applied Machine Learning Algorithms (MLAs): Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) to assess the power transformer winding fault is carried out. This work also introduces a machine learning algorithm that has the highest performance in terms of accuracy (validation and testing) with measured data from 300 power transformers that are independently inspected by industry connoisseurs. The obtained results show that the ANN method yields the best results when compared to the other algorithm.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"7 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Section IV offers a real-world application of the Living Lab framework, showcasing the university's transition to solar PV systems and its significant potential. The framework's ten key elements find resonance in the selection, setup, and monitoring of these systems. UCT's current PV infrastructure, representing just 2% of its potential, emphasizes the room for growth and integration of sustainable practices. The results show that if 80% of the available space (26 434 m2) is used, UCT could achieve 4,86 GWh of energy and reduce 5,05 kilotons of carbon emissions. The value of the existing system lies not only in energy generation but also in the data-driven approach, which informs adjustments and further expansion. This symbiotic relationship between framework and implementation is a paradigm for institutions seeking holistic sustainability in a real-world context.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"37 10","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is the case with the double tuned four branch, shunt, passive filter, whose performance, at the zero sequence harmonic, is poor due to low zero sequence source harmonic impedance. In this paper, it is experimentally demonstrated that the performance of the filter can be significantly improved by increasing the zero sequence impedance of the source. This is done by placing a zero sequence blocking transformer in series with the source and a four branch, shunt passive filter across the line to simultaneously filter a zero and a nonzero sequence current harmonic from three balanced single phase nonlinear loads.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"37 7","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the financial implications of this operation must be seamlessly incorporated into future energy planning. This study used the calculated costs incurred by Majuba Power Station due to cycling operations in 2016. It projected the total cycling costs for the Eskom coal-fired fleet in 2035. The cost of cycling operations per scenario of the energy mix as per Wright and Calitz’s (2020) systems analysis report was calculated, comparing the relative costs of two-shifting and load-following. The study also estimated the two-shifting events for each coal-fired plant operational in 2035. This paper projects differential costs for cycling operations in 2035, influenced by primary energy resource consumption rates and costs. Considering the cost of load-following and the cost of two-shifting, the annual cost of cycling the coal-fired fleet is expected to range between R25.5 million and R695.1 million in 2035. Majuba Power Station is estimated to incur the most cost of two-shifting for the fleet in all four scenarios, projected to be approaching R500 million, while other stations are below R100 million.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"51 6","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper specifically focuses on the harmonic emissions component of the Grid Code, and how inductive current transformers (commonly used in outdoor substations) can impact the accuracy of these measurements. This paper considers inductive burden and harmonic current amplitude as two components to consider. An increased ratio error is introduced when lower current harmonic amplitudes are measured, typically below 0.5 A. An even greater ratio error is experienced when inductive burdens are connected to the secondary circuit of the current transformers. Conducting measurements and quantify the burden at each site is of importance, while also determining its influence on measurements when conducting harmonic current analysis for Grid Code compliance. Once quantified, these errors can be compensated for to improve the accuracy of these harmonic current measurements.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"57 4","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we collected expected electricity generation for wind power and weather data at one hour interval over a period of one year at Great Kei Local Municipality in South Africa. A linear regression machine learning scheme is subsequently used to predict expected available wind power as well as the quantification of strategic reserve. The results show that there is good degree of alignment between the observed and predicted wind power. The scheme is also able to quantify strategic reserve needed by wind power producers (WPP) in order to mitigate losses during participation in short-term electricity market. A strategic reserve margin needed for a wind farm with an installed capacity of 21 MW , is estimated to be ± 1.344 MW .","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"61 2","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering the importance of improving AVR performance, it is essential to utilize an appropriate control technique in order to achieve this goal. In this paper an MPC base controller for AVR is improved for an AVR system and compared to the existing Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) based AVR designed as my previous work to improve the performance of an AVR. Based on the comprehensive analysis of the available literature, it can be inferred that the exploration of advanced control systems, specifically the Model Predictive Controller (MPC), has not been thoroughly examined within the current corpus of scholarly works. In this work the MPC controller is optimized using MATLAB Simulink. In order to assess the performance of these controllers, we take into account metrics such as the integral of the absolute error (IAE) and the integral of the squared error (ISE) rise time (Tr), settling time (Ts) and the response time has been reduced to 0.4 seconds hence the terminal voltage of a synchronous generator is restored to 1pu in 0.4 seconds.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"19 3","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Full detectors designs and performance have been published in literature, however generic mathematical methodology research in readout circuitry is lacking for detector development. Two versions of the cascode configured pixels were used (BJT only based and BJT/MOSFET combination based configurations). Y-parameter representation was used to perform the comparison using techniques previously published. It was found in both modified 4T pixel structure detectors that the transresistance gain improved significantly (from MV/A range to GV/A range). Using these modified mathematical models, a designer can easily design a 4T pixel structure detector for a wider set of circumstances previously not possible which results in more optimised detectors. It was found by replacing the normal pixels with cascode configured pixels that the overall gain is improved significantly due to a reduction in input resistance owing to the cascade configured pixels.","PeriodicalId":518587,"journal":{"name":"2024 32nd Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC)","volume":"18 3","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140530583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
