They are carried away in captivity (1.5), found begging for food on the streets (2.11–12, 4.4), starved (2.19), parched (4.4), and eaten by their mothers (2.20; 4.10). Despite their presence, the children in Lamentations have never been the focus of research. This article argues that though the future of children is not promising, children are not just caricatures within the book. The children in Lamentations are actively trying to survive in the famine. Despite the horror of being betrayed by their own mothers, Lamentations reminds its readers that the children are not entirely orphaned. In lieu of their mother’s protection and nurture, the children are fostered by the solidarity and tears of Daughter Zion and Mother Zion respectively.","PeriodicalId":51830,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the Old Testament","volume":"61 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138606700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a multi-disciplinary project. The reason for this approach is the degree of uncertainty surrounding the translation of these names, as seen in some Bibles and recent scholarship, where many identifications are at the taxonomic levels of order or family, while some genus- or species-level identifications are implausible. We show that some of the uncertainty is very ancient. Onomatopoeic correlations between the Hebrew names with selected bird calls are examined. We found good-to-strong correlations for 17 of the 19 birds in Leviticus 11.13–19, and suggest 15 as species-level correlations, with one of the others at genus-level, two at family-level, and one at order-level. We conclude with a list of suggested translations resulting from this research. The methodology is explained so that it may be replicated for further research.","PeriodicalId":51830,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the Old Testament","volume":"113 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138607614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article examines the ark narrative (1 Sam. 4–6) in its various contexts, including its biblical and ancient Near Eastern ones, and posits icons as a profitable heuristic device. I present the ways that the ark and its story respond to ancient Near Eastern tropes and suggest that the reason for the ark’s capture lies in the characters’ failure to communicate with and obey the deity. My primary contribution lies in reading the narrative alongside its sequel, 1 Samuel 7, which recontextualizes the story by displaying divine power without the ark and retrojecting a Deuteronomistic rationale for the Israelite loss. I also consider its (post-)exilic reception and place it alongside Priestly and Deuteronomic presentations of the ark, which differ in detail but share a common goal, especially when read as part of a single sacred document.","PeriodicalId":51830,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the Old Testament","volume":" 36","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138619382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To demonstrate Absalom’s sin, this paper surveys the episode regarding Absalom’s rebellion (2 Sam. 15.1–12) through related texts in the book of Samuel. Then it considers the stories about the two counselors, Hushai and Ahithophel (16.15–17.14). This examination reveals that Ahithophel’s two counsels aim to promote the unity Absalom pursues in 15.1–12 and that this will of Absalom is frustrated by Hushai and actually by YHWH. YHWH defeats Absalom’s will, just as Absalom’s rebellion opposes YHWH’s will; YHWH punishes Absalom measure for measure. Therefore, 2 Sam. 17.14b proves that YHWH upholds the measure for measure theological principle.","PeriodicalId":51830,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the Old Testament","volume":" 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138613233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These variants are attested in two syntactic contexts: (a) clauses with non-canonical word order; and (b) subjectless clauses with third-person masculine verbs. In both contexts, an overt subject does not appear in its expected linear position. Consequently, an unintentional interpretation of the first suitable syntactic phrase as an overt subject at the closest proximity to its predicate is sometimes observed in the scroll. This (mis)interpretation is evaluated from a sentence-processing perspective and explained by (a) economic processing; and (b) the probability of comprehenders’ interpreting linguistic input as a simpler and more plausible structure in their language. A preference for subject interpretation is well attested in other Subject-before-Object languages, indicating a general bias of comprehenders toward the simplest structure of the linguistic input, in which all syntactic phrases are realized in their canonical positions with no moved or absent elements.","PeriodicalId":51830,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the Old Testament","volume":"48 1","pages":"105 - 131"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46738858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many studies have focused on the major characters and their company. However, insufficient attention has been given to characters on the margins of the narrative I identify as ‘marginal characters’. In this paper, I investigate the narratological function of these characters through an examination of select marginal characters in 1–2 Samuel. Drawing upon a conceptual framework for analyzing anonymous characters in Greek Tragedy, I propose two functions for these marginal characters: 1) they serve as a reflection of the narrator’s disposition toward the complex characters of Saul and David; 2) they serve as manifestations of divine providence. These functions are not mutually exclusive. In both cases, however, the marginal characters contribute to a strategy of narrative persuasion, leading the audience to certain ideological and theological conclusions.","PeriodicalId":51830,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the Old Testament","volume":"48 1","pages":"69 - 83"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48560053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article suggests that a second but not mutually exclusive interpretation is possible in light of the story’s Mesopotamian background. According to this reading, the author of Daniel 5 used the traits of Nabû to subvert the well-known Babylonian belief that Nabû was the tutelary deity for the Babylonian kings. By rendering Nabû completely powerless before the Jewish deity, the author exalts the Jewish deity as the Most High God (עליא אלהא‎) who effectively displaces Nabû. It is in this capacity that the Most High God weighs the arrogant pagan king’s deeds and then determines the length of his life. Such a theological message would serve to comfort the intended audience of the pericope, the Jewish diaspora community under pagan rule, and encourage them to faithfully obey their God.","PeriodicalId":51830,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the Old Testament","volume":"48 1","pages":"18 - 35"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48859374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This indicates that Jephthah’s vow to sacrifice those who oppose him upon his return from battle should not be perceived in isolation but rather in light of the agreement made in YHWH’s presence. The phrase ‘come out to meet’ (יצא לקראת‎) describes not only the content of Jephthah’s vow (11.31) but also the appearance of his daughter (11.34). This article argues for this identical phrase as an antanaclasis. On this reading, Jephthah’s vow to sacrifice a person who comes out to meet him in his peaceful return was not made in exchange for victory in war but rather to atone for sins committed by rejecting the terms of the contract. Moreover, it was transformed by his daughter into a celebration of the Israelites’ victory, deliverance, and territorial expansion beyond its protection.","PeriodicalId":51830,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the Old Testament","volume":"48 1","pages":"3 - 17"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48983163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through skillful narrative construction, the text presents a Levite who consistently acts the opposite of how a Levite/priest should behave according to biblical law. The study examines his wandering in search of a residence, his officiating in Micah’s sanctuary, and his dispensing of oracles. Through his consistent reversal of Micah’s duties, the study shows how this character helps create in readers the impression of cultic anarchy and configure the final chapters of the book of Judges as a heated social critique.","PeriodicalId":51830,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the Old Testament","volume":"48 1","pages":"36 - 49"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48904921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This brief juridical parable offers a unique account of justice and adjudication largely independent of its ideological depiction in the Pentateuchal law codes, making it a critical text in the study of biblical law. In particular, it evokes two distinct forms of judicial wisdom in the context of legal self-help and royal adjudication. By comparing and contrasting this parable with other texts dealing with similar themes, I outline the diverse ways biblical writers explained the intersections of law, wisdom, and justice.","PeriodicalId":51830,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the Old Testament","volume":"48 1","pages":"50 - 68"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43732819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
