{"title":"Texts from a carnivalesque time of change: four poems in Estonian Half-German","authors":"Vahur Aabrams","doi":"10.1080/01629778.2023.2244481","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/01629778.2023.2244481","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT This article focuses on four poems written in Half-German by three Baltic German authors: ‘Die Oberpahlsche Freundschaft’ (1818/1857) by Jakob Johann Malm, ‘Karluscha Tattelbaum’ (1903) and ‘Benjamin Paul Püttisepp’ (1909) by Arthur Usthal, and ‘Reise ins Ausland’ (1954) by Walter von Wistinghausen. Literature written in Half-German emerged in a particular socio-historical and linguistic context, which is outlined in the first part of the article. The focus of this article is on the nineteenth century – the heyday of this literary tradition. We have investigated the influence of information and communications technology (ICT) on the transnational communities of Estonia, one of the world’s frontline countries when it comes to technological usage. We conducted interviews with Estonians who permanently live abroad to discover how ICT helps them stay connected with their country of origin. Transnational Estonians ensure the continuance of their connections via ICT. While such chronological discrepancies are perhaps inevitable in a collection by several contributors, it would have been helpful to explain the selected chronological boundaries, both those of the individual articles as well as that of the volume as a whole: why 1350 was chosen as the upper chronological limit for the book is never fully explicated and the reader has to resort to an educated guess. In sum, the volume is a very valuable contribution to our understanding of the processes transpiring in the present-day Latvia and Estonia in the postcrusades period. In medieval Livonia, there are hardly any traces of local poetry, but the situation changed with the Reformation. During the sixteenth century – linked to the development of congregational singing – psalm poetry became particularly active. In the seventeenth century, the Passion of Christ emerged as a new and well represented topic. Lithuanian social media remains quite active in fueling more antisemitism. Written in English and translated into 40 languages, Foti’s book will have to be included in Lithuania’s historiography of the Holocaust, but the memoir genre does not lend itself to objective history. Despite the book’s shortcomings, Foti has exposed her ‘heroic’ grandfather as a žydšaudis, responsible for the deaths of 10 –15,000 Litvak deaths.
