Bijbelse voorstellingen van deïficatie door Grieks-Romeinse ogen","authors":"Suzan Sierksma-Agteres","doi":"10.21827/tr.67.2.117-139","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21827/tr.67.2.117-139","url":null,"abstract":"This essay argues that the contemporary philosophical discourse of ‘becoming like god’ (homoiōsis theōi) offers a relevant cultural frame to analyse both the convergences and divergences between Platonic, Stoic, Epicurean, and diverse biblical takes on deification. In particular, participation in the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4) is interpreted in light of the close connection between ontological and ethical transformation found in Graeco-Roman sources. Additionally, it is observed that Paul limits his expressions of‘becoming like’ to Christ as the ultimate ‘image of God’, this in line with mediating figures in Middle Platonic traditions - traditions which were also concerned with upholding divine transcendence. The biblical material on this theme is found to be distinctive in at least three aspects: in the critical function and democratizing effect of the ‘image of God’ motive, in the kenosis and suffering of the mediating Image, and in the collective nature of the transformation, encompassing whole communities and, in somecases, the whole of creation.","PeriodicalId":517853,"journal":{"name":"Theologia Reformata","volume":"25 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141271800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some Reformed theologians embrace the idea of deification, others decidedly reject it because of the distinction between Creator and creature, and problematic aspects of participation ontologies. Calvin’s theology shows a logic of participation that is more theologically balanced than the idea of deification. While the terminology of deification is unhelpful, the aspects of participation (in Christ) and transformation suit a Reformed theology well.","PeriodicalId":517853,"journal":{"name":"Theologia Reformata","volume":"105 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141272549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article defends participation, finds it attractive and, in fact, an unavoidable traditionalChristian account of the relationship between God and the world, not strange to the Reformed tradition. This doctrine moves individual soteriological concerns into the wider orbit of God’s being, the nature of creation, and humanity. The article argues thatalthough participation is rooted in Platonism as a spiritual philosophy, it was fundamentally altered by the Jewish-Christian tradition. It explores the different ways in which the Christian tradition tried to do justice to the difference between God and creation in a participatory sense. It continues to show how the Reformed theologian Herman Bavinck’s dogmatics adopts the participatory theological-metaphysical framework as a matter of received wisdom of the tradition. The article closes with recognizing three characteristics of a participatory ontology that suggest it is sound Christian theology.","PeriodicalId":517853,"journal":{"name":"Theologia Reformata","volume":"29 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141268713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different views about the number of covenants, the (un)conditional nature of the covenant, and who belong to the covenant of grace, have been fixed for decades. The disputants no longer attempt to influence, never mind convince each other. This article examines recent publications from opposite sides (Verbond en doop from the GGN and Woord houden from the GKN) and seeks to bring the different covenant views into conversation with each other, by critically discussing these views and testing them for their inner consistency. This essay seeks to give impetus to renewed reflection on Reformed covenant doctrine by articulating the differences and the elements of truth in both publications.","PeriodicalId":517853,"journal":{"name":"Theologia Reformata","volume":"12 13","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140408000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It proposes three layers of hermeneutical processes: ‘biblical hermeneutics’, ‘theological hermeneutics’, and ‘hermeneutics as resonance’. On a deeper level, resonance, an alternative to what Reformed homiletics called ‘application’, can process the insights of modernity and postmodernity. Dealing with the scriptural text during sermon preparation, resonance enables the preacher to focus upon a lived spirituality.","PeriodicalId":517853,"journal":{"name":"Theologia Reformata","volume":"7 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140407792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
