Through three case studies set in the eleventh and sixteenth centuries, the article sheds light on intercultural encounters, shifting power dynamics, and fluid identities. It also offers pedagogical tools and activities tailored for teaching the history of European music at the post-secondary level. Our objective is to reveal the complexity and plurality of ethnic and social identity in Western European music, thereby contributing to a more nuanced understanding and teaching of its history.","PeriodicalId":517554,"journal":{"name":"MUSICultures","volume":" 17","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140390197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anti-racist actions that identify, describe, and dismantle racism can be productively applied to music history courses by adopting strategies outlined in the work of Kyoko Kishimoto. By exploring knowledge production through the historiography of canonic music, challenging Eurocentrism by teaching Western music as “ethnic,” and dismantling the division of white and non-white musics into different disciplines, this article offers an approach to musicultural anti-racism.","PeriodicalId":517554,"journal":{"name":"MUSICultures","volume":" 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140390669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
