Boundary conditions determined by International Standards underestimate the cooling potential of passive strategies in the free-running mode in warm-humid climates. Thus, a climate file-based study is conducted to determine city-specific requirements for the residential building program. Indices like Climatic Potential for Natural Ventilation and Climatic Cooling Potential are used in conjunction with the Indian Model for Adaptive Comfort to define boundary conditions for Natural Ventilation, Nocturnal Ventilation Potential, and Thermal Mass Potential in four inland and coastal cities in the warm-humid climate of South India. With the least Natural Ventilation Potential, mixed-mode operation of buildings is feasible in Nagercoil. Elevated airspeeds benefit Tiruchirappalli and Chennai during the day. With a Nocturnal Ventilation Potential of 10–20%, passive dehumidification is favorable in all cities. Results show that the climatic potential for each strategy varies with location and plays an important role in developing city specific design inputs for residences.","PeriodicalId":51753,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Green Building","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87411054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since people require adequate housing safety, safety challenges associated with housing have received increasing attention. Although development of sustainable housing was rapid in the last few decades, insufficient studies considered households’ needs and examined the health and psychological safety issues in sustainable housing. This study aims to establish an indicator system and develop a model to evaluate habitat safety from three dimensions: physical safety, health safety, and psychological safety. This study develops an evaluation system containing 46 indicators to assess the safety performance of sustainable housing from households’ perspectives. In addition, criteria importance through intercriteria correlation (CRITIC) method is combined with the Cloud Model to provide systematic and visual evaluation results. A government-funded sustainable housing project in Chongqing, China, is selected as a case study and questionnaire surveys were delivered to collect the raw data of subjective ratings on the 46 safety indicators. The following findings are observed: (1) there is a prominent demand for improvement in psychological safety of sustainable housing, followed by health safety; (2) different age groups have different safety needs; and (3) regulations and standards are very important to improve the habitat safety of sustainable housing. The study considers safety issues from households’ perspectives and introduces a different idea of human safety in sustainable housing. It provides an effective method to evaluate housing safety and could be a useful reference for further development of sustainable housing.","PeriodicalId":51753,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Green Building","volume":"92 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88694446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is leveraged from the application of advanced technological methods which are attributed to sophisticated computational capabilities such as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). For facilities management (FM), the business environment features of any organisation play a vital role in attaining its objectives which is a core mandate in delivering the functions of FM. Hence, it is important to assess the business environment factors influencing the use of CPS in the delivery of FM functions. This study was conducted in Gauteng province in South Africa with the use of a structured questionnaire administered to built environment professionals. Collected data were analysed in five stages which include data reliability and validity, descriptive statistics, establishing a difference in groups’ opinion, principal component analysis, and model testing and fit statistics. Findings from the analysis revealed that business environment features were statistically significant in the actualisation of the use of CPS for FM. Conclusively, the findings from the study make both theoretical and practical contributions to the body of knowledge by providing insights that can help equip organisations with the knowledge of business environment factors that are influential in the use of CPS for FM.","PeriodicalId":51753,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Green Building","volume":"342 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79554138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to identify and prioritize energy consumption optimization strategies in buildings. Data collection consists of gathering primary data from the existing literature and secondary data from interviews, questionnaires, and simulations through building information modeling (BIM) tools. Twenty-nine strategies were identified and categorized into five groups according to their nature and ranked using one of the multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods called the step-wise weight assessment ratio analysis (SWARA). A case study building in Shiraz, Iran, was simulated using BIM software, and the energy saving potential of the highest ranked strategies were obtained. According to the results, significant contributors to the energy consumption optimization were “Using renewable energy resources,” “Using efficient insulation,” and “Using suitable materials,” providing 100%, 35%, and 23% efficacy, respectively. The results obtained from this study can inform the building industry’s key stakeholders regarding the best strategies to apply in order to reduce energy consumption and improve sustainability in the construction industry.","PeriodicalId":51753,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Green Building","volume":"351 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90689374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Infiltration testing of three original permeable parking rows through August 2012 indicated that clogging occurred along the upgradient edge of these pavements from runoff that drained from adjacent impermeable driving lanes. A subsequent infiltration testing data collection effort from April 2017 through March 2020 focused on permeable interlocking concrete pavers (PICP) that replaces one of the original permeable surfaces. While the original infiltration study through 2012 used random locations throughout the permeable parking rows, the newer study targeted upgradient edge to identify where clogging would occur. Testing locations along the upgradient edge were selected based on a high-resolution survey (HRS) of the parking lot performed in December 2014. The HRS identified three low spots along the upgradient edge that eventually clogged in the new PICP infiltration study. The HRS may assist with maintenance routines. The newer study also supports the conclusion of the earlier study with regards to truncating the infiltration testing method, particularly for maintenance assessments.</p>","PeriodicalId":51753,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Green Building","volume":"17 4","pages":"3-18"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2022-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9926402/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9310452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, perception about the initial and maintenance cost of green walls along with lack of awareness about operational cost savings seems to influence the slow uptake of green wall applications. In that context, this research aimed to assess the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) of green walls in comparison to a conventional wall towards exploring the operational cost benefits which are the most convincing decision criteria for clients/investors. The study involved a case study analysis of an indirect green façade and a comparative conventional wall. The data required to perform the LCC analysis were collected through documentary reviews and on-site temperature measurements. The analysis shows that the initial cost of a green wall is 15% higher than a comparable conventional wall. However, operational and maintenance costs of green walls result in 64% and 25% savings due to potential energy cost-saving, and minimum external redecoration time interval, respectively. This results in an overall LCC saving of 45% over conventional walls with a reasonably expected lifetime of fifty years. As a departing point of previous studies, this study provides empirical evidence on the LCC of green walls in comparison to a conventional wall in a residential facility, from a tropical climate perspective.","PeriodicalId":51753,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Green Building","volume":"40 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72409003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this program, three design steps, i.e. overall planning, unit organization and house type design are integrated with three aspects of the mountain-dwelling spirit, i.e. “hugeness and tininess,” “precedence and subsequence” and “external and internal.” Meanwhile, different levels of two methods, i.e. topography and schema were taken into consideration. This stimulates students’ critical thinking of the tradition spirits, combines the prototype of tradition with sustainable design, and keeps balance between theory and practice. Finally, three design cases from the course are introduced to enlighten the reinterpretation of Chinese mountain-dwelling spirit.","PeriodicalId":51753,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Green Building","volume":"51 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81266098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Government involvement is the driver to overcoming obstacles and the rapid development of green buildings. However, reviews are unavailable on green building-related strategies and policies adopted by the government at a national level. To fill this gap, this paper first gives an up-to-date summary of the overall development status of green building projects in Singapore, which is considered an active pioneer for the green building industry. Then, the policy instruments adopted by the government were reviewed systematically. The results reveal that the Singapore government launched a wide variety of green building policies in different stages of green building development. Furthermore, developing a scientific and reliable rating tool is a fundamental strategy for green building. At present, inadequate green building-related regulatory systems are still the main obstacles to the implementation of green building in many nations. In this regard, this paper will provide a valuable reference for policymakers to develop effective and efficient strategies for promoting green building.","PeriodicalId":51753,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Green Building","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82367544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

UHI is caused by a multitude of factors including both spatial factors; for example, features of landform surfaces and surface characteristics, and temporal ones, linked to yearly, seasonal, diurnal, and nocturnal air temperatures. A comprehensive overview of current literature and critical analysis of UHI is provided in this paper. It aims to assess the environmental and social impacts of phenomena in different climate regions, and how some of these factors can be used as a design tool to associate and estimate renovations and policy-making strategies. Then it discusses various approaches for modeling UHI intensities on different scales. The paper concludes with a classification of potential mitigation strategies including their advantages and disadvantages as well as their suitability for different climate regions.
