We previously found that using explicit (e.g. Mark is gay) and implicit (e.g. Mark is attracted to men) sexual identity labels mostly led to positive perceptions (e.g. more proud, likeable, resilient), in a sample of university students who were predominantly young, liberal women. We sought to extend these findings and determine whether a sample from the United States would rate characters identified as LGB more negatively. To this end, a nationally representative sample (N= 510) was recruited via Prolific and, participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: explicit, implicit, or no labels. Participants read short biographical vignettes with one set of labels and provided ratings of the characters on positive, negative, and neutral traits. As hypothesised, explicit and implicit labels for LGB characters generally led to higher ratings on negative traits (e.g. confused, perverted, and promiscuous), but also increased ratings on one positive trait (progressive). Pre-screening telephone interviews identified ten individuals who matched inclusion criteria (mean age: 39 years; range 26–62 years) as part of a larger study. Interviews were semi-structured and informed by a literature review undertaken at the start of the study. We identified three themes of that extend the resilience literature for LGBTQ+ people: (1) identifying and foregrounding inherent personal traits – how non-contextual inborn qualities or attributes needed external effort to be recognised and operationalised; (2) describing asymmetric sources of social support and acceptance – the importance of positive environment is unequally available to LGBT people compared to heterosexuals, and uneven within the LGBT group; and (3) blurring distinctions between resilience and coping – experiential approaches to moving beyond distress. But what happens when the coerced partner refuses to go along with orgasm coercion? And how do perpetrators of orgasm coercion react? In the current study, we analysed 100 participants’ (cisgender women, n = 66; cisgender men, n = 24; gender/sex minorities, n = 10) descriptions of refusing orgasm coercion during their most recent orgasm coercion encounter. We assessed how participants expressed refusals, perpetrators reacted to these refusals, and perpetrator reactions connected to relationship and psychological outcomes. Results showed that participants used a variety of refusal strategies that were positively- or negatively-valenced. Some perpetrators (31%) reacted in positive, understanding ways. However, most perpetrators (61%) reacted negatively or with more coercion when confronted. Of note, results suggested that whether perpetrators responded in positive vs. negative ways did not depend on participants’ refusal strategies. We also found that positive perpetrator reactions were associated with positive relationship outcomes, but participants reported high negative psychological outcomes regardless of perpetrators’ reactions. A scoping review was conducted to identify current knowledge of asexuality and components of asexual identity development and internalisation that emerge within literature. Findings from 29 articles were analysed and formed into themes that best describe the key events and sense-making processes underlying identity development, such as coming-out, the reactions of others and how asexuals interpret their identity. These findings indicate that heteronormativity and compulsory sexuality play a role in how individuals internalise their asexuality, which in turn, shapes their identity development. Despite this, considerable gaps in the literature concerning partner relationships, stigmatisation, isolation and the impact that this has on asexuals’ wellbeing continue to exist. However, no measure currently exists that specifically examines positive sexual identity in bisexual people, whose experiences differ from those of gay men and lesbian women. These three studies outline the development, refinement, and validation of a measure of positive bisexual identity. In Study 1, participants completed an initial pool of items and a validation measure. A principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted for item reduction. Studies 2 and 3 investigated the Positive Bisexual Identity (PBI) measure’s scale-score reliability and dimensionality using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The construct validity of the PBI scale also was tested using measures expected to correlate with positive bisexual identity. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients and Omega coefficients provided support for scale score reliability, and the proposed nomological network offered support for the PBI’s construct validity. Our findings elucidate potential differences between positive bisexual identity and positive gay/lesbian identity. However, attitudes towards LGBT individuals may also contribute to their experiences of minority stress. In the present study, the relationship between mental health literacy (MHL) and attitudes towards LGBT individuals in Australia and India was investigated. Seven-hundred and eleven participants (355 male) from Australia (n = 303) and India (n = 408) completed an online survey which included questionnaires indexing the participants’ MHL and their attitudes towards LGBT individuals. MHL was associated with attitude scores, such that participants with higher levels of MHL tended to report more positive attitudes towards LGBT individuals. These relationships were stronger for Australian participants compared to Indian participants. These findings suggest that minority stress may be intensified for LGBT individuals when the MHL of the people they interact with is low. Alternatively, MHL may signal how willing an individual is to offer mental health support to a LGBT person. As part of a larger study to develop a sexual health intervention for cisgender sexual minority girls, this analysis explored the context of first sexual experiences of 48 cisgender, sexually experienced, sexual minority girls ages 14 to 18 years in four online focus groups. We used qualitative description to explore with whom girls had their first sex, where it took place, and the context surrounding the experience. Our findings documented both thoughtful intended first sex in committed and intimate friend relationships, and casual, unintended experiences influenced by alcohol, in parental homes and outdoor settings, and provide brief glimpses into the first experiences for sexual minority cisgender girls. Experiences of gender euphoria are often overlooked during clinical assessment and most academic research tends to focus solely on discussions of gender dysphoria. The primary aim of this study is to use grounded theory combined with photo-elicitation methodologies to gather a more nuanced understanding of experiences of gender euphoria in the lives of TGD individuals. Data for this study was collected via online photo-elicitation interviews with TGD adults (n = 30). Descriptive and visual data clarify gender euphoria as a concept as well as reveal the ways in which it is experienced among TGD adults. The primary themes emerging from the study yield the following four key processes, which explain experiences of gender euphoria: 1. Being exposed to a gender affirming antecedent, 2. Having an affirming thought, 3. Feeling a positive emotion, and 4. Experiencing enhanced quality of life. Participants’ discussions elicited through self-selected images contribute to a more meaningful understanding of gender affirmation in the lives of TGD people.
