It investigated the intricate interplay between photographic realism and contemporary themes within Mohsin Hamid’s novel “Exit West.” The study delved into the meticulous portrayal of migration, geopolitical landscapes, counterterrorism measures, and the influence of digital technology within the narrative. By drawing parallels between Hamid’s prose and photographic realism, the analysis focused on the nuanced exploration of displacement and conflict. The examination of magical doors as a literary device akin to photographic realism revealed their role in capturing the instability of geopolitical structures and disrupting conventional borders. Photographic realism was adopted as a literary theoretical framework. This research contributed to a deeper understanding of how Hamid’s novel served as a critical commentary on the multifaceted challenges within the global human experience, emphasizing the relevance of photographic realism in contemporary literary analysis. Despite establishing the LSHS, aimed at providing healthcare irrespective of economic status, residents continue to experience deprivation, restricted access, and substandard healthcare services. Doubts arise regarding the efficacy of legislative oversight in mitigating structural violence. This study explores this issue by employing a comprehensive methodology involving primary and secondary data collection through literature reviews, questionnaires, and interviews. The analysis reveals that the prevalence of structural violence within the LSHS cannot be exclusively attributed to deficiencies in the oversight responsibilities of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Lingering disparities, limited accessibility, unaffordability, and inadequate healthcare quality persist. Contributing factors encompass inadequate funding mechanisms, and deficiencies in communication, among others. Researchers collected folktales featuring Beteri, conducted interviews with informants, and analyzed the contents of the collected folktales to identify the values of social intelligence within them. The analyzed stories featuring various Beteri characters are Beteri and Sinamnam, Beteri and Bujang Bekurung, and The Kindness of Beteri. The results revealed that the social intelligence depicted in the story of Beteri encompasses two main dimensions: social awareness and social facilities. Researchers identified representations of social intelligence in the story, including caring, alignment, empathic accuracy, influence, and social cognition. This social intelligence is manifested in Beteri’s actions during interactions with other characters and her attitude when facing problems. This qualitative descriptive research uses the critical ecolinguistics approach of Stibbe. The data collection was carried out by using note-taking techniques. The data were in the form of words, phrases and sentences related to the environment (ecolinguistics) in the folklore \"Berru Leto\". From the analysis, it was found that ecosophy is related to the teaching of life, especially in the relationship between humans and humans, humans and the environment, and humans and God. From this representation, the folklore \"Berru Leto\" contains a positive assessment which aims to provide understanding in order to maintain relationships between humans and humans, especially children and parents. Apart from that, it is very necessary to maintain human relationships with the environment and human relationships with God. It contains constructive things for the environment and life because it contains wisdom. This folklore reveals and appreciates the issues of life and well-being of all species, promotes human well-being, promotes environmental understanding, and promotes the redistribution of resources. A field study was conducted in the city of Baghdad, the capital of the Republic of Iraq. The study aims to identify social awareness of environmental pollution and the causes leading to its occurrence, as well as the role of the media, especially environmental media, in educating the public about environmental culture and raising awareness of its social, health, and developmental risks. The position of civil law in determining the perpetrator's responsibility, forcing him to compensate, and confronting the effects of pollution within the framework of civil liability for environmental pollution damage, especially since there are problems with civil liability for pollution damage, in determining the legal basis for this responsibility about error and damage The researcher used four scientific methods in the study: the descriptive method, the historical method, the comparative method, and the social survey method. The study used a stratified random sample, as the research population was divided into three classes of society: the upper class, the middle class, and the popular class. A percentage of (2%) was drawn from each class, and we obtained a sample consisting of 481 respondents from male and female heads of households. The study reached a set of conclusions, including, but not limited to, that the wars experienced by Iraqi society are a major reason for increasing the severity of environmental pollution and that environmental pollution has led to the emergence of serious diseases such as physical and congenital deformities, as well as social and psychological diseases, especially individual indifference and weakness. loyalty and belonging to the community. The study also concluded that the Iraqi media is weak at creating social-environmental awareness among the public about the culture of the environment and pollution. The many challenges teachers face can have an impact on their wellness. Teachers frequently struggle to maintain a healthy work-life balance because of the hard job, long hours, and time limits. Additionally, the emotional demands of the job, such as handling difficult circumstances or managing student behavior problems, might result in elevated stress levels. These issues are made more difficult by scarce resources, a lack of support networks, and a culture that puts teacher wellbeing last. Schools and higher tertiary institutions may establish a happy and encouraging environment that improves overall student results by recognizing and addressing the wellbeing of instructors. This research paper focused on the benefits of teachers’ wellbeing and self-care, the common challenges teachers face, and strategies for promoting teachers’ wellbeing and self-care. Most of the population in Kalimantan consists of the Malay and Dayak ethnic groups. The Malay people have a highly diverse culture, and one of their cultural expressions is syair (Malay poetry). This research aimed to describe the religious values represented in Malay poetry in Ketapang, West Kalimantan. Thus, the researcher employed an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through observation and interviews. The study was conducted in Ketapang region. The findings indicated that the religious values in syair in Ketapang consisted of 25 about beliefs (aqidah), 71 about Islamic laws (syariah), 31 about ethics (akhlaq), 6 about Islamic principles, 17 about faith (iman), and 50 about good deeds (ihsan). These results have positive implications for syair in the Malay community in Ketapang, ensuring that it is recognized and continues to thrive. {"title":"Animist materialism in Femi Osofisan’s No More the Wasted Breed (1983) and Once Upon Four Robbers (1991)","authors":"Promise Adiele","doi":"10.58256/bh325w05","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.58256/bh325w05","url":null,"abstract":"In his oeuvre, Femi Osofisan challenges class inequalities by upbraiding the materialistic predilections of the upper class. Therefore, critics view his plays as revolutionary manuscripts designed for social awakening and interpret them from a Marxist perspective. Marxist interpretation has, to a good degree, undermined other ideological potential and evident discursive engagements which abound in multiple hierarchies in his plays. This study advances the frontiers of interpretations in Osofisan’s plays by providing alternative meanings in them besides Marxism. Through the theoretical praxis of Material Culture, I argue that beyond Marxist, class proclivities, Osofisan in No More the Wasted Breed (1983) and Once Upon Four Robbers (1980) commits to cultural rebirth in Africa through animist materialism, a spiritual, sociocultural appropriation process which inputs lifeforce to natural objects like rivers, plants, and animals. In addition to their material, totemic, sublunary significance, these natural objects acquire mystical and magical essence, thus contributing to the reification of African spiritual practices found in the plays. The spiritual practices rehabilitate African culture, promoting and re-enchanting its symbolic orthodoxy in the modern world.
