E. B Du Bois is familiar as a sociologist of religion and as a Black intellectual and activist. He is less known as a poet and speculative fiction author and certainly not at all as a Romantic author. I present Du Bois as a radical Romantic poet and speculative fiction author who employs religious forms and motifs to reveal and combat anti-Black racism among other forms of oppression. This portrait of Du Bois will no doubt surprise many. Romanticism is usually understood as a specific, delimited period of artistic and intellectual history—a period that Du Bois does not belong to chronologically nor (as most would assume) ideologically. Slingerland","doi":"10.1093/jaarel/lfad065","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1093/jaarel/lfad065","url":null,"abstract":"The Database of Religious History is a large-scale digital humanities project dedicated to capturing scholarly perspectives on the history of religious groups across the globe. Analysis of the current state of the data shows a remarkable consistency between a taxonomic tree generated from the entries submitted by our expert contributors and larger assumptions within religious studies as they pertain to the similarities and differences between religious groups. Additionally, there is broad agreement between how experts answer questions and the tags they use to categorize their own entries, demonstrating a consistency between top-down and bottom-up approaches to describing religious groups. The presumption has often been that to be held morally responsible, a person must be free to choose and to act. The views of Harare’s Baptists directly challenge this understanding, with important outcomes for their political lives. I show ethnographically how they do so through the urgency of their daily moral deliberations as religious practitioners. Influenced by Augustinian theology, they treat moral responsibility as a condition of existence, irrespective of choice. I argue that they adhere to a “normative freedom” as an alternative to classically liberal perspectives or to freedom as outlined recently in anthropological discussions of ethics.
