Few programs support oncology healthcare worker grief and renewal prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: Describe \"knowledge of\" and \"engagement with\" a program about grief and resilience, Remembrance & Renewal (R&R). Method: An anonymous, electronic survey was available to healthcare workers at an academic, comprehensive cancer center. Demographic questions were analyzed against \"knowledge of\" and \"engagement with.\" Results: Of 105 responding to \"awareness of,\" 81 knew about R&R and 48 had \"engaged with\" the program. Statistically significant relationships between a characteristic and awareness were found for education (p  =  .03), setting (p < .01), and the frequency of learning about a death (p  =  .04). Statistically significant relationships between a characteristic and level of participation were found for profession (p  =  .02) and length of time in job (p  =  .03). Open-ended questions asked about impact of patient death (n  =  93), barriers to participation (n  =  54), and feelings after \"engagement with\" (n  =  45). Responses to impact, barriers, and feelings were respectively: sadness (75.3%); time (77.8%); and calm (75.6%). Conclusion: This study describes \"knowledge of\" and \"engagement with\" a holistic grief and renewal program. A randomized cluster trial assessed 150 nurses' vital signs and Visual Analog Scale for Stress (VASS) levels pre, post, and at follow-up to achieve a power of .7 and medium affect size. Open-ended questions following the intervention enriched quantitative findings describing the experience, facilitators, and barriers to potential use in nursing. The generalized estimating equation 1 (GEE1) comparisons of mean change over time, found that nurses in the HT intervention, had significantly lower VASS stress scores at posttreatment (-0.95, p  =  .0002) and at follow-up (-0.73, p  =  .0144) than the DB group, and the respiratory rate (RR) rate differences were nearly significant at post-intervention and significant at follow-up, respectively (1.36, p  =  .0568 and -2.28, p  =  .0011), indicating lower RR after HT. Both explanatory and predictive, the theory further develops the existing conceptual work on the topic of storytelling. It places storytelling as a pedagogical technique within the realm of holistic nursing theory and philosophy. Storytelling is seen as a manifestation of the process of integral interconnectedness. The theory suggests a mechanism by which storytelling, as mediated by narrative transportation and neuroplasticity, can be effective in promoting desirable outcomes for holistic nursing students, including the achievement of affective and cognitive educational objectives. The theory describes the relationship of storytelling to narrative transportation and neuroplasticity. Within the concept of storytelling, the Temporal Bidirectionality of Story and Experience and the Story Creation-Interpretation-Recreation Cycle of telling and listening are explained. This theory was developed using deductive reasoning combining existing nursing and non-nursing theories. Recommendations for research and application are included.
","PeriodicalId":51615,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Holistic Nursing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"10513784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since undergraduate academic instruction prepares nurses for practice, innovative strategies that train pre-licensure nurses to care for the spiritual needs of patients are essential. Design: A course needs assessment identified spiritual care as the most deficient competency for undergraduate psychiatric students. A three-phase quality improvement project designed to increase student awareness and practice of spiritual care included (a) development of a quality improvement plan, (b) implementation, and (c) outcome evaluation. Methods: Spiritual care was introduced into the Spring 2020 semester through didactic content and experiential practice. Additionally, an evidence-based spiritual assessment tool (i.e., HOPE questions) was integrated into the course to train students for use in clinical and simulation. Surveys were used to compare the 2019 and 2020 cohorts. Findings: Results showed a statistically significant increase in students' perception of spiritual care competency after project completion. Conclusions: Future implications include the use of similar methods to improve spiritual care competency for pre-licensure nursing students. The purpose of this study was to explore the associations between spiritual wellbeing, its religious and existential wellbeing dimensions, and health-related quality of life among Jordanian Muslim hemodialysis patients. Design: A cross sectional, quantitative correlational study. Methods: A convenience sample of 150 Jordanian hemodialysis patients completed a structured, self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate regression models were used. Findings: The Jordanian hemodialysis patients had a moderate level of spiritual wellbeing and religious wellbeing, a low level of existential wellbeing, and a poor health-related quality of life. The findings revealed a significant moderate positive correlation between the spiritual wellbeing and its dimensions, and health-related quality of life. The existential wellbeing was the strongest predictor, with a large, positive, and significant effect after controlling for other spiritual, demographic and medical-related variables. Conclusion: Overall, the study suggests Jordanian hemodialysis patients use their religious and spiritual beliefs and practices as a coping mechanism, especially as sources of satisfaction, peace, comfort, strength and support, to help improve their health-related quality of life.","PeriodicalId":51615,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Holistic Nursing","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"10226867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
