This article examines the determinants of disaggregated interracial killings in 1,381 U.S. counties by testing conflict-based accounts in an era of economic recession and unprecedented Black political mobilization. Results show that one dimension of racial conflict—political competition—is linked to interracial killings. Counties with mounting interracial rivalry in the political domain are significantly more likely to experience White perpetrated killings of Black residents and less likely to experience Black-on-White homicide offending. These results suggest that contests for political influence lead to greater interracial violence involving White perpetrators and Black victims.","PeriodicalId":51586,"journal":{"name":"Homicide Studies","volume":"149 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136107290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We analyzed data on 1,104 domestic homicides recorded by the Home Office Homicide Index between January 2014 and March 2021 using interrupted time-series analysis. Findings showed an immediate drop in ex-partner homicides following the first lockdown and higher than expected levels of parent and child homicides at different points during the first, second and third lockdowns. Our results suggest a change in the composition of domestic homicide during lockdown and contribute to a more detailed understanding of the short-, mid- and long-term effects of lockdown measures on domestic homicide.","PeriodicalId":51586,"journal":{"name":"Homicide Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2023-08-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41460925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To fill this gap in research, this study examines public mass stabbings and compares them with public mass shootings around the world (1999–2022). Findings identify significant differences in the geographic locations, target locations, offenders’ age and resolution, and number of victim casualties that illustrate these are unique forms of mass murder. This work provides the next step toward advancing knowledge of global mass murder and paves the way for future research aimed at understanding and addressing the phenomenon.","PeriodicalId":51586,"journal":{"name":"Homicide Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2023-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44922933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, criminological, sociological, and psychological theories posit why individuals commit homicide and what conditions increase the risk of homicide commission; the public health field is interested in reducing mortality and morbidity and population-level interventions to do so; social workers work with at-risk individuals in homicide prevention and healing from traumatic events; nurses and other health care providers may identify those at risk and work to reduce that risk; and criminal justice practitioners are part of the societal response to homicide commission. Each discipline has made important contributions to the study and understanding of homicide, homicide prevention, and the consequences of homicide, but due to the siloed nature of academia, these contributions may not be wellknown to researchers across disciplines. It is likely that at least some of these theories and research findings may be largely unknown to researchers in other disciplines whose work may benefit from their incorporation. Fortunately, researchers have started to recognize that some of the most pressing social problems of our time are multifaceted and require a holistic understanding to better inform solutions. As a result, there has been a movement toward interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work recently. The differences between these types of research are based on their integration and use of disciplines (Choi & Pak, 2006). Multidisciplinary research incorporates the learning and perspectives of different disciplines, but the contribution of each discipline remains within its boundaries.","PeriodicalId":51586,"journal":{"name":"Homicide Studies","volume":"27 1","pages":"407 - 410"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2023-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49222367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This case study utilizes medical examiner data from Harris County, Texas (2016–2020, n = 2,517) to identify and examine correlates of domestic violence homicides. The research team identified more than double the number of domestic violence homicides than had been flagged in the original data. Geospatial analysis identified unequal distribution of homicide across communities and significant gender-based disparities in domestic violence homicides. Transdisciplinary approaches can be used to accurately identify domestic violence homicides and provide a foundation to develop multi-level interventions.","PeriodicalId":51586,"journal":{"name":"Homicide Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2023-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44127695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two Two-Step Cluster Analysis were performed, one for the nonserials ( n = 87), and one for the serials ( n = 33). Six types of sexual murderers were identified: four types of nonserials ( sexual nonsadistic, sadistic, angry, and sexual opportunistic), and two types of serials ( severe sadistic and psychopathic). These analyses indicated a perfect match between the sadistic and the severe sadistic. The identified types were subjected to comparative analyses (Chi-Square, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests) based on modus operandi characteristics and were compared to previous sexual-offender typologies.","PeriodicalId":51586,"journal":{"name":"Homicide Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46406187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This shaping of crime to fit preconstructed perspectives can result in the spread of fear-based ideals. This study assesses use of fear-based media framing in serial homicide news articles. Taking a mixed methods approach, results suggest prolific use of fear-based framing methods, with six dominant fear-based themes identified. Fear-based frames of provoking, dehumanizing, magnifying, validating, and sensationalizing fear were found and a new frame, sanctifying fear, was identified. Variability among use of frames by offender characteristics were also assessed.","PeriodicalId":51586,"journal":{"name":"Homicide Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43274821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using qualitative analysis, we examine the presence or absence of techniques of neutralization among the population of persons sentenced to death for homicide in Texas during their last statement before execution between 1982 and 2022 ( N = 578) and how such techniques overlap with other emergent themes. A paired samples t-test showed that mean pre-and post-treatment posttraumatic stress scores decreased significantly, with a large effect size. Reliable change indices indicated that 75% improved and 25% remained unchanged. Despite the severe consequences for children and young people following PIPH and the great variability in their experiences, results promisingly show that they may benefit from treatment.","PeriodicalId":51586,"journal":{"name":"Homicide Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43447654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
