To this end, the grid method or low-discrepancy sequences are used to generate some representative sampling points in the design space, which are used to predict the performance function of other uniformly generated samples (WAS population) by an interpolation technique. To estimate the performance function value for other samples more accurately, a new adaptive method is proposed by introducing a critical region. The AI-WAS method has been applied to different numerical and engineering problems with complex and implicit limit state functions. According to the results, the proposed approach, compared to the original approach and popular reliability methods, can highly reduce the number of actual limit state function evaluations required for an accurate estimation of the failure probability.","PeriodicalId":515204,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability","volume":" 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141372248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems are designed to operate on demand and prevent environmental catastrophes. The proposed model is novel because: (i) inspections (functional tests) are fixed and periodic; and (ii) the replacement policy has three-phases, corrective, opportunistic-preventive, and scheduled-preventive. Thus, the system is replaced: at a positive test; at a test regardless of the outcome either if an opportunity arises or when the system reaches a critical age. The model is relevant because periodic inspections are largely the practical, engineering reality, and particularly useful for geographically distributed systems, for which there is limited time and resources for maintenance. The paper provides a web-based application as a demonstrator of the proposed model. The study extends and refines well-known policies from the literature, providing valuable insights about applicability across various parameter settings.","PeriodicalId":515204,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability","volume":"55 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141269513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under the assumption that the lifetimes of test units follow a family of inverted exponentiated distributions, estimates are derived under classical and hierarchical Bayesian frameworks when the differences in different test facilities are taken into consideration. Maximum likelihood estimators are obtained and their existence and uniqueness properties are also established. In addition, Bayes estimators are provided under a hierarchical framework, and a hybrid Metropolis-Hastings sampling procedure is proposed for complex posterior computation. The performance of all the proposed approaches is compared via extensive simulation studies and two real-life data are analyzed for illustration. From numerical results we observe that the hierarchical approach provides relatively better estimates for model parameters.","PeriodicalId":515204,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability","volume":"57 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141121415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, due to the instability of the 5M1E factors, that is, Man, Machine, Method, Material, Measurement, and Environment, in the manufacturing process, certain components within these systems could introduce epistemic uncertainty factors and thus interfere with the results of evaluation and decision. Consequently, a novel integrated mission reliability evaluation and selective maintenance approach considering epistemic uncertainty is proposed. First, an uncertain–random operational model for manufacturing systems, in which the uncertain operational mechanisms are specified, is established as the foundation. Second, a mission reliability evaluation method for uncertain–random manufacturing systems that fuses the conformity and fitness quality data is proposed to cope with the challenge of epistemic uncertainty. Third, a selective maintenance decision model that maximizes the system’s mission reliability is developed in consideration of the uncertain factors within the operation process. Finally, a case study of a ferrite phase shifting unit manufacturing system is conducted to validate the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":515204,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability","volume":"39 30","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140966124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, in engineering and applied studies, two or more populations are required to perform the experiment. In this article, we develop the order-restricted ( OR) statistical inference of two inverted exponentiated Rayleigh ( IERayleigh) populations based on the joint type-II progressive censoring scheme ( J-IIProgCS). We also consider the problem of the stress-strength reliability Re = P( X> Y) estimation under J-IIProgCS. The process of estimating the parameters with order restriction ( PaR-OR) and Re are performed using the maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian methods. On the presumption that the gamma priors are independent, the Bayesian estimate of reliability model is obtained using the hybrid Gibbs within Metropolis-Hastings ( G-MeHa) algorithm. Moreover, with assumption the ordered Beta-Gamma prior for the shape parameters and the Gamma prior for the common scale parameter, the Bayes estimates of the parameters with order restriction are evaluated. The classical confidence intervals and the Bayesian credible interval are created. A detailed numerical illustration using simulated data sets is carried out. A real engineering example related to splashing phenomenon is considered for illustrative purposes.","PeriodicalId":515204,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability","volume":"4 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140671351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Coal mine intelligence is the core technical support for the high-quality development of the coal industry. The deep integration of coal mining safety production management and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is practically significant to achieve accident prevention. To efficiently identify mining accident risk factors and explore mechanism of coupling between risk factors, this study mined 400 reported cases of mining accidents in Shanxi Province and identified 64 accident risk factors through custom, stopword, synonym dictionary construction, keyword extraction and keyword correlation analysis. Then, this study constructed association rules and a Bayesian causal network. The major risk factors are identified using a comprehensive high-frequency, sensitivity, strength and key path analysis of the Bayesian causal network. The following seven risk factors are found to play a major role in the occurrence of mine accidents: inadequate safety supervision, disordered safety management, illegal organization of production, inadequate staff safety education and training, operation against rules, command against rules and weak safety consciousness among the staff. Finally, a case study is conducted to validate the reliability of the results. This study solves the problem of incomplete extraction of key feature information in coal mine reports and the lack of analyses of coupling mechanisms between coal mine risk factors in traditional accident analysis methods, providing the methodological support for the effective use of unstructured coal mine safety production data for risk analysis.","PeriodicalId":515204,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability","volume":"127 31","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140669071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The degree of deflection wear of wheel flange is divided into different grades. Based on the reliability-cost function, the influence of economy is quantified and introduced into the analysis of deflection wear as an index. We establish an economic model of flange deflection wear and cutting amount of reprofiling (FDW-CA). Based on the deflection wear prediction model and FDW-CA model, we model the economy-oriented reversing control policy. To verify the feasibility and validity of the control policy. The measured data before and after the reversing policy are analyzed. The results indicate that the cutting amount of wheelset is reduced from 11.2 to 6.6 mm on average for single reprofiling, and the saving is more than 40%. The reversing control policy can reduce the cutting amount of wheelset, reduce the limit probability of wheelset, extend the life of the wheelset, and reduce the operation and maintenance cost of the wheelset, and further provide basis for wheelset spare planning.","PeriodicalId":515204,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability","volume":"118 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140669636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work presents a commercially tried and tested methodology for assessing the practicability of implementing PEPSs based on statistical analyses in combination with an As-Low-As-Reasonably-Practicable (ALARP) assessment, to assist in the justification of asset application viability. By extrapolating fatality-weighted injury data relating to the inclusion or non-inclusion of PEPSs, a safety risk model predicts changes in injury statistics to establish a quantified safety impact. The economic cost analysis identifies the operational expenditure for PEPSs throughout their lifecycle along with the capital expenditure and any impacts on the operational railway. The outcomes from these analyses are combined to produce a ratio of safety and operational benefits to capital and operational cost which is scrutinised against a designated disproportionality factor to establish suitability for use.","PeriodicalId":515204,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability","volume":"95 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139853111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
