Noise that travels from these units through ducts and into the spaces within buildings can be attenuated with silencers or duct lining. However, sound radiated from the unit through building\u0000 structures or into communities can be more difficult to attenuate and often adds significant cost. While it is possible to attenuate sound from the unit using enclosures or sound walls, exploring the operation of the fan arrays themselves could be a more cost-effective noise reduction method.\u0000 One particular noise reduction method for an existing fan array was proposed for a customer: review sound levels of each fan within the array to determine how they are contributing to the radiated sound power level of the unit. The assumption that sound levels between individual fans within\u0000 fan arrays are consistent is not always correct. A series of acoustical tests were completed; results indicated that sound caused by turbulent airflow within the tested fan array was able to be lowered by reducing the fan speeds of individual fans. By reducing the fan speeds of problematic\u0000 fans and increasing speeds for the quieter ones within the same fan array, the same level of cooling can be provided with lower overall radiated sound levels at no additional cost.

Traffic noise, especially from vehicles with aftermarket parts, is a major contributor to environmental\u0000 noise. Restrictions on vehicle noise vary by state and are rarely enforced. Aim: To understand perspectives of individuals, government officials, and special interests regarding vehicle noise enforcement. Methods: Two focus groups and 27 one-on-one interviews were conducted, primarily on Zoom.\u0000 The stakeholders interviewed were: 13 concerned residents, two auto shop owners, 8 auto enthusiasts, two police departments, one city councilor, and one special interest group. Call guides were developed based on background research and 238 written comments. Interviews were transcribed, summarized,\u0000 and analyzed using qualitative coding. Results: While residents and enthusiasts agree drivers must be considerate, only enthusiasts prefer neighbor dialogue to government enforcement. Government officials favor in-person police enforcement but are considering acoustic cameras and other targeted\u0000 approaches. All agree that vehicle noise should not be prioritized over more serious public safety matters. Conclusion: An effective compromise is possible. Governments should continue in-person noise enforcement while altering the built environment and beginning publicity campaigns to discourage\u0000 noisy and reckless driving.

The amount and nature of noise generated by these chiller farms to the surrounding area can create complaints and the noise control solutions require an understanding\u0000 and knowledge of both broadband and tonal noise. The dominant noise sources on air-cooled chillers are compressors and condenser fans, each of which produce both broadband and tonal noise spectrums. Therefore, noise control solutions should address both the broadband and tonal aspects of the\u0000 source. A common noise control solution for chillers serving data centers is a sound barrier wall and while effective at providing overall broadband noise control, does little in targeting tonal issues. However, a sound barrier wall can be supplemented to address these tonal issues by applying\u0000 source treatments to the chiller, such as a sound cover treatment for the compressors and associated refrigerant piping and sound stacks and intakes for the condenser fans. In addition, barrier walls an create a "pit" application impeding chiller condenser fan discharge air resulting\u0000 in recirulation and nuisance trips. Using a sound stack source treatment with a barrier wall can help mitigate this issue while providing attenuation.

This paper assesses the validity\u0000 of that predictive regression equation when the omnidirectional assumption is removed, and the effects of a directional source are examined through modeled analysis and empirical study. These criteria are usually derived from transportation noise studies for which the relative proportion of low-frequency noise is implicit. Very different\u0000 community reactions can arise when source spectra don't represent those studied. Responses diverge even further when the listeners' context also differs from that originally studied. This is nowhere more evident than in the case of large industrial equipment (such as power plants and gas compressor\u0000 stations) sited in rural areas, due in large part to strong Low-Frequency Noise (LFN). Guidance for forecasting community reaction to LFN is scattered throughout the literature as individual studies employing a diverse assortment of approaches and noise descriptors. The purpose of the present\u0000 paper is to demonstrate a straightforward, comprehensive, and unified forecasting approach suitable for inclusion in ANSI S12.9 Part 4 "Noise Assessment and Prediction of Long-Term Community Response", similar in many respects to the method recently deleted from this standard (2005\u0000 Annex D).

These chambers have a 6 to 25 cubic meter volume, use a 1.0 meter x 1.2 meter sample size and report sound absorption\u0000 in the one-third octave bands from about 400 Hz to 10,000 Hz. This is in contrast to a full-size chamber built to satisfy the requirements of ASTM C423 or ISO 354, which have about a 200 cubic meter volume, use a 2.4 x 2.7 or 3.2 x 3.2 square meter sample size and report sound absorption in\u0000 one-third octave bands from 100 to 5,000 Hz. Although the room and sample size dimensions scale, many of the factors that contribute to uncertainty in the measurement do not scale. These include relative humidity, temperature, and other physical measurements and if the same instrumentation\u0000 is used, microphone calibration and measurement uncertainty in the higher frequency range. This paper examines the potential measurement uncertainty in these chambers over the 400 to 10,000 Hz frequency range and compares this to past uncertainty analyses of full-size chambers over a similar\u0000 frequency range.

These systems involve various components such as blowers, thermal exchangers, actuators... over\u0000 a wide range of well-known technologies and also innovations on newly introduced designs and products. Currently, within the established electrification trend worldwide, HVAC systems became one of the most important embedded systems, possibly inducing major contributions of noise and vibration.\u0000 These NVH topics can emerge through various transfer paths inside the car cabin causing significant discomfort to passengers. During development and production stages, the NVH behavior at component level is mastered by both suppliers and OEMS according to internal standards and specifications.\u0000 However, implementation into the complete vehicle can induce a specific NVH behavior unrelated to the compliance status at component level. Integration impact cases are highly reinforced within electrification trends as they involve more and more design changes with less technical background.\u0000 Through a practical case study, this paper focuses on the NVH behavior induced by the integration of HVAC systems in the US market. Transfer paths analysis and solutions are investigated to improve the NVH behavior and set the product intrinsic limits giving the targeted vehicle.
