Rasheed","doi":"10.25130/lang.8.1.17","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.25130/lang.8.1.17","url":null,"abstract":"Stockholm syndrome refers to a psychological phenomenon observed in situations where individuals, typically hostages or victims, develop a deep bond or compassion for their captors or abusers. Scholars describe Stockholm syndrome as a complex emotional response where victims, despite being held against their will, start feeling positive emotions or sympathy for their captors. This paradoxical phenomenon involves hostages expressing admiration or praise for their captors, seemingly irrational given the danger they face. Victims may form emotional attachments and bonds as survival strategies fostering a connection that contradicts the apparent threat posed by their captors. The main aims of the present study are twofold. The first aim is to examine the depiction of submissive wives in the novel When I Hit You: Or A Portrait of a Writer as a Young Wife(2018) written by Meena Kandasamy; and the second, analyzing the wife’s submissiveness and acceptance of her spouse’s abuse through relating it to Stockholm syndrome and through the lens of abuse cycle theory suggested by Lenore Walker's concept of Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS), which encompasses various psychological and behavioral symptoms. It aims at identifying and comparing: \u0000 \u0000The quality of writing expository composition for EFL university students at the department of English, colleges of Education for humanities at Tikrit and Baghdad Ibn - Rushd universities. \u0000EFL university students' quality of writing expository composition in the light of the three principal dimensions: Complexity, Accuracy and Fluency at the two universities. \u0000 \u0000    The aims are achieved by applying a diagnostic test to 185 undergraduate EFL students, in the third year, English Departments, Colleges of Education for humanities, at Tikrit and Baghdad Universities. The study has conducted during the second semester of the academic year 2022-2023. The results have revealed that EFL university students have a low quality of writing in the three specified dimensions: complexity, accuracy and fluency. Thus, writing and speaking are one of the more traditional aspects of effective communication. \u0000    Strategic competence is one of the competencies that contribute in communicative competence. It is the ability to convey information to a listener and correctly interpret information received. It includes the use of communication strategies to solve problems that arise in the process of conveying the information. \u0000     Thus, the current study aims to evaluate EFL students' conversational performance in accordance to competence in the written and spoken conversation.  In order to accomplish these objectives, the following research questions are formulate: Is there statistical significance in strategic competence as a general dimension between university students' performances at Tikrit and Samarra universities? Is there statistical significance   among Iraqi EFL university students' conversational performances in strategic competence at both spoken and written levels? To achieve these research questions, the following aims are posed: Identify and compare influences of strategic competence on Iraqi EFL university students' conversational performance between two universities (Tikrit and Samarra). Eliot's poetry contains several floral references that are employed symbolically. This study investigates the symbolic connotations of T. S. Eliot's floristic symbolism in “Gerontion” and 'The Waste Land'. The form and essence of modernist symbols will be investigated to trigger profound and subconscious feelings in the reader, concentrating on the terminological and conceptual elements of the topic. The significance of flowering Judas, dogwood, chestnut, hyacinth, and lilac in Eliot's “Gerontion” and “The Waste Land” have been interpreted and explored using analytical, historical, and archetypal approaches as the “Gerontion” intended by the poet to be a prelude to “The Waste Land”. Textual and analytical research has been conducted to demonstrate the unusual utilisation of five flora referred to in ''Gerontion'' and ''The Waste Land''. The poems' texts and theoretical and historical sources have been examined to collect the required data for the paper. One of the most essential research objectives of the paper is to find out how these blossoms were used symbolically in two of Eliot's poems. Persuasion as a technical term is a process of convincing others rationally to change their state of minds in accordance with a specific purpose. \u0000       The study hypothesizes that persuasion is a process rather than a state of affairs.  Also, it hypothesizes that female speakers are more successful in following the persuasion techniques to convince their audience of their points of view than men. Also, it is hypothesized that women rely more on the mode of pathos than the other three modes; logos, ethos and kairos, while men rely more on the logos mode of persuasion. \u0000      The study comes with some conclusions the most important of which is that men use more persuasion techniques than women with the preference of the techniques of evidence, repetition and  analogy. Women prefers to use the techniques of  inclusion and repletion. It is also found that women rely heavily on the pathos mode of persuasion while men rely on the modes of logos, ethos and kairos. Furthermore, it is found that there is a strong relation between the mode of persuasion the speaker prefers and the techniques followed. In this study, the development phases of this theory are illustrated, from its founder to the linguists that developed it. This study is a practical effort in which the dialects of Kurdish Language are applied in the shade of the morphological theory with elaborated examples in accordance with both holistic and partial approaches, as the two approaches of the mentioned theory.
