We reflect on our experiences as researchers, subjects, collaborators, writers, and readers through lens of relational power. By collaborating to craft an immersive true story that revealed larger truths to readers, we were affected by each other, created ourselves out of what we had taken in, and influenced each other and others after being affected by them in our processes of relational becoming.","PeriodicalId":512691,"journal":{"name":"International Review of Qualitative Research","volume":"32 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140701973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We even consider that writing qualitatively always has an invisible prefix of supporting before it since the practice is not possible without multiple supports. From our different positionalities as a Black doctoral candidate, a white writing center director, and an Asian faculty, we write a collective autoethnography as an inquiry to examine what we do, how we do it, and what it produces when we are supporting (and) writing qualitatively in our private, teaching-oriented, regional, predominantly white institutional context where doctoral programs offer only one qualitative research course. What our writing reveals is that supporting writing qualitatively is possible only when we live/work together—stay long enough—in that in-between space of you know that I will not understand and you pray for me to understand. In this space, we get entangled with each other’s multiple relationships with our selves, Others, and errantries, which, in turn, changes each of us, our relation, and this writing.","PeriodicalId":512691,"journal":{"name":"International Review of Qualitative Research","volume":"269 35‐39","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140703990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper chronicles one researcher’s attempt to reconceptualize research as sacred acts of relationships and relating through challenging the primacy of language, and traditional conceptualizations of disability. Calling on praxis as a complex dynamic of theory and practice—two indivisible parts of being human—I will discuss a research project involving a professional development experience for teacher candidates with disabilities or diagnoses, as a research endeavor that attempted to facilitate research as a sacred act occurring in the relationships formed and relating within, between, and among the people involved and employed methodological tools that do not rely on language as an only source of communication.","PeriodicalId":512691,"journal":{"name":"International Review of Qualitative Research","volume":"75 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140708048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given this growing interest in relationality, I attempt to describe several philosophical approaches to relationality, explain how relationality is not simply a theory but an ontic stance, and consider relational theory’s implications for social justice. Regardless of the varieties of relationality that exist (be they ancient, current, Eastern, or Indigenous), research adopting a relational stance is antithetical to the world in which we find ourselves today: in brief, well-populated with (substantialist) sentiments that would seek to divide and isolate individuals, rather than show our inherent connectivity. Qualitative work is in a position to tease out the nuanced, multifaceted, and shared relationships that, by relationality’s standards, are our ontic foundations. I close with the idea that qualitative work may be pedagogical in its ability to spread these sentiments not only to fellow researchers, but to participants in this work as well.","PeriodicalId":512691,"journal":{"name":"International Review of Qualitative Research","volume":"19 32","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140711706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To these ends, this article is divided into two overarching sections. The first section attends to questions of what it might mean to theorize processes of qualitative writing in general, what qualitative writing can do and the ethical commitments such writing should likely engage as matters of course. The second section presents the kinds of possibilities and challenges soundwriting can engender. This section underscores connections to fields of sonic study, how sounds can interrupt qualitative research’s often ocularcentric understandings while maintaining continuing discussions of ethical commitments to ecologies and the things that comprise them, including (more than) human animals. Rather than a polemic, this piece seeks to address what soundwriting can do as well as what might be gained for qualitative researchers and our audiences through such intentions, attentions, and expressions.","PeriodicalId":512691,"journal":{"name":"International Review of Qualitative Research","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140717995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its origin manifested at the Frankfurt School, among a group of privileged White men seeking to eradicate social ills in Germany during World War II while lacking sufficient global experience and understanding to apply the theory to macro injustices. While critical theory did not redress the limitations of the intellectualized vision, the theory was reconceptualized as more encompassing with its forced relocation to the United States, though still limited in its application to the social ills of woman’s suffrage and the civil rights movement of Blacks in the United States. In flux, the revised critical theory became propagative. Despite its limitations illustrated here in the work of W. E. B. Du Bois, Critical Theory gave rise to scholarships that highlight injustices across areas it did not foresee that include race, ethnicity, disability, gender, and anticolonialism. As a result of Critical Theory across modernities, some silenced voices can be heard, despite what some have labeled an exclusionary canon.","PeriodicalId":512691,"journal":{"name":"International Review of Qualitative Research","volume":"86 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140729288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To do this, I ground this work in Foucault’s genealogy regarding the consolidation of sovereign and disciplinary powers, and repressive apparatus. Foucault theorizes that repressive apparatus necessarily produce delinquency, and this paper takes up this notion to explore how delinquency can be productive for qualitative writing. In doing so, I consider the dangers of delinquency becoming complicit in repressive apparatus and how delinquent writing can resist this tendency. I theorize that delinquency and delinquent work are constantly on the move and never complete as they exist always-already in response to repressive apparatus that are likewise always shifting in the name of sovereign and disciplinary powers. Ultimately, I explore what implications repression and delinquency may carry for research methods and methodologies in the field of qualitative inquiry.","PeriodicalId":512691,"journal":{"name":"International Review of Qualitative Research","volume":"48 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140729750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper draws on imaginative narratives and Barad’s engagements with queer theory to emphasize the importance of disrupting these notions and understanding bias and subjectivity as dynamic and mutable concepts that might contribute to deeper reflexivity and new research possibilities. The overarching argument is to tie bias, subjectivity, and reflexivity together not as oppositional or even complementary concepts but as a queer self-birthing of multiple, mutable selves full of possibility.","PeriodicalId":512691,"journal":{"name":"International Review of Qualitative Research","volume":"2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140730181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After engaging with the perspectives and experiences of several qualitative researchers who work from relational and emergent onto-epistemologies, I began to regard writing qualitatively as a bodymind’s thinking-doing using neurodiverse modes of expression. Through a cross-modal approach to exploring my writing process, I take readers through my journey of thinking about writing through painting and with paint, color, brushes, canvas, line, shape, and movement. Neurodiverse thought, communication, sensing, and perception, as well as verbal, non-verbal, and pre-verbal expression connect to movement between pre-articulation and articulation and to seminar discussions about relations, spirit, and flow when writing qualitatively. I conclude with an invitation for readers to engage with encounters that cross modes in thinking-doing as writing-and, where ARTiculation is foregrounded as embodied thinking, neurodiverse concept creating, and pre-verbal articulation for the communication of ideas and is experienced as being as adequate (and inadequate) for conveying meanings or findings as written language.","PeriodicalId":512691,"journal":{"name":"International Review of Qualitative Research","volume":"14 S6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140741416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
