The traditional teaching method is mainly teacher-centered, paying attention to the impartation of knowledge, and this will neglect the students’ creativity and communicative ability. However, Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) which advocates student-centered classrooms and learning foreign languages through communication, takes communicative competence as the ultimate goal of foreign language teaching. This paper presents the research on the connotation, characteristics and advantages of the communicative language teaching method, while paying attention to the difficulties encountered in its promotion in the process of English teaching in universities. Prior to exposure to CLT approach, the respondents had been exposed the traditional English language teaching and learning in a comprehensive English class. In order to understand the basic situation of the cultivation of university students’ English communicative competence in Ningxia Medical University, 200 non-English major students responded to a questionnaire survey. The four aspects of university comprehensive English class are the learning objectives of English class, basic learning tasks in English class, students’ interests, and difficulties in improving English communicative ability were analyzed using SPSS 23.0. The results reveal that communicative activities such as role-play, ask and answer activities, discussion and debate, and story-telling can be used by teachers to help students develop communicative competences. It is important to highlight that there are a variety of corresponding strategies besides the activities mentioned that can be incorporated in language teaching to improve the communication skills of students and English teaching in universities.","PeriodicalId":512580,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Linguistics","volume":" 45","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141374262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Acknowledged as integral to fluent linguistic expression, these bundles play a pivotal role in conveying evaluations, opinions, and attitudes in both spoken and written communication. Despite their significance in articulating personal and professional assessments, the utilization of lexical bundles in the review genre remains a relatively unexplored area of study. This paper aims to explore the use of epistemic lexical bundles within the context of applied linguistics literature reviews, comparing two distinct groups of writers: experts and student writers. Through a corpus-based contrastive analysis conducted on the Expert Literature Review Corpus (ELRC) and the Malaysian Literature Review Corpus (MLRC), four-word lexical bundles were automatically generated using Wordsmith Tools 6.0 (Scott, 2012). The identification of Epistemic Personal and Impersonal lexical bundles followed the categorizations of Epistemic Stance Bundles proposed by Biber et al. (2004). The findings reveal noticeable differences in the preferences of experts and student writers regarding the use of Epistemic bundles, particularly the absence of subcategory Personal bundles in the learner corpus. However, some shared bundles suggest a certain degree of alignment in writing style, vocabulary, and expression of epistemic stance between the two groups when reviewing existing literature. These insights carry implications for academic writing, emphasizing the necessity for further exploration in this domain.","PeriodicalId":512580,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Linguistics","volume":"57 29","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141383899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, I argue, little still is known about the symbiotic relationship between gamification and motivational strategies in English language learning/teaching in contexts such as Saudi Arabia. To address this critical research gap, building on the current debates on gamification in English language education and through what I term gamification-cum-motivational strategies in English language education, this paper explores how gamification could develop different motivational strategies among Saudi English as a foreign language (EFL) learners. I use a commonly played game among Saudi teenagers dubbed “Call of Duty” as a case example to explore how such gamification could enhance different motivational strategies among them. I close the paper with some pedagogical implications and concluding remakes.","PeriodicalId":512580,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Linguistics","volume":"50 35","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141383991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such works particularly explored how explicitly encoded linguistic elements, such as grammatical gender markers, may drive the inferential process as attentional clues. Results of reading comprehension tasks in French and German have shown that the explicit encoding of masculine gender in plural forms of role nouns often leads to a male bias, a specific masculine inference corresponding to the grammatical gender clue, even when the masculine form was intended as generic, thus including women and men. Moreover, comparing generic masculine forms with gender-fair alternatives revealed that the latter significantly reduce this male bias. The present study examines the impact of three gender marking strategies on the construction of generic mental representations. Indeed, the experiment tested generic masculine against two gender-fair forms (split masculine/feminine forms and ambiguous syntactic reformulations) among 38 Italian speakers. No significant effect was found in generating a generic mental representation through form manipulation. However, ambiguous syntactic reformulation realised by presenting target nouns from the Italian common gender noun class and through the neutralisation of determiners’ gender, increased the probability of a male-specific inference. Additionally, a keen interest in gender-fair language topics was linked to longer reaction times, indicating a higher cognitive effort during the inference process.","PeriodicalId":512580,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Linguistics","volume":"338 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141386159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Syntactic elements that belong to an array of forms and lexical categories chain with verbs to make verbal structures whose building and meaning are equally dependent on both parts of the structure. Each element exhibits certain patterns and behaviors, and makes its own semantic contribution to the composite predicate, resulting in a collective meaning that is not necessarily a precise reflection of the overall meanings signified by both elements. Drawing on data from Kumzari language, this paper attempts to give a better understanding of its verbal system, and to situate its complex predicates within the complex predicates spectrum. It argues that complex predicates in Kumzari belong to the ‘light verb constructions’ [LVCs] realm since both elements exhibit similar features attested in light verb constructions of other languages, including Indo-Iranian languages, such as syntactic and semantic compatibility, morphosyntactic behaviors, and joint predication of argument structures.","PeriodicalId":512580,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Linguistics","volume":"21 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141382454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
