Effective and efficient use of energy are necessary for an improved agricultural production. Therefore, this research was undertaken for potato production to assess productivity, quantify energy flow and financial profitability of different production systems. The experimented four systems were manual planting and manual harvesting, machine planting and manual harvesting, manual planting and machine harvesting and machine planting and machine harvesting, respectively. The experiment was conducted at Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process (FMP) Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) during 2017-18. Yield of potato including yield contributing characters for different treatments was not significantly varied. Direct energy was the highest in mechanical planting and harvesting system (25%) and the lower manual planting and harvesting system (18%). Indirect energy shared 82% in manual planting and harvesting system, 78% in machine planting and manual harvesting system, 80% in manual planting and mechanical harvesting system, and 75% in machine planting and machine harvesting system, respectively. The largest source of indirect energy consumption was from fertilizer (22-27% of the total energy). The higher specific energy of 1.93 MJ/kg was found in manually planted and mechanized harvesting system. The higher product value was from manual planting and mechanical harvesting system. The highest BCR (2.25) was found from machine planted and machine harvested followed by manually planted and mechanically harvested plot (2.16), machine planted and manually harvested plot (1.93) and manual planting and harvesting plot (1.91). Thus, mechanically planted and harvested system can be recommended for potato production since it can reduce 52% labour requirement than manual method and can give higher BCR among the tested production methods. ","PeriodicalId":512286,"journal":{"name":"Asian Plant Research Journal","volume":"41 S1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140701867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The treatments were two hybrid white maize variety viz. V1 = PSC-121 and V2 = KS-510 and three planting spacing viz. S1 = 50 cm x 25 cm, S2 = 60 cm x 25 cm and S3 = 70 cm x 25 cm. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Results revealed that variety and plant spacing had significant effect on the studied characters and yield. The highest plant height, longest cob, highest number of kernel cob-1, the highest 100-grain weight, maximum grain yield and stover yield were observed in hybrid white maize PSC-121. On the other hand, the shortest plant, lowest number of grains cob-1, 100-grain weight, grain yield and stover yield were observed in hybrid white maize KS-510. The longest plant, highest number of kernel cob-1, the highest 100 grain weight was recorded in the spacing of 70 cm × 25 cm but lowest grain yield (7.52 t ha-1) and stover yield (9.362 t ha-1). In contrast, the spacing 50 cm × 25 cm produced the lowest values of the above mentioned plant parameters but showed the highest grain yield (9.20 t ha-1) and stover yield (11.64 t ha-1). In regard to interaction effect of variety and spacing, V1S1 (PSC-121 with 50 cm x 25 cm) interaction produced the highest grain yield (9.60 t ha-1), biological yield (21.621 t ha-1) and harvest index (46.01%). On the other hand, V2S3 (KS-510 with 70 cm x 25 cm) interaction achieved the lowest grain yield (7.36 t ha-1), biological yield (16.94 t ha-1) and harvest index (43.151%). Based on the experimental results, it may be concluded that maize (cv. hybrid white maize PSC-121) can be cultivated with a spacing of 50 cm × 25 cm for appreciable grain yield due to higher number of plant per unit area.","PeriodicalId":512286,"journal":{"name":"Asian Plant Research Journal","volume":"257 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140717998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study, conducted during the 2021-2022 Kharif season at Karor Adaptive Research Farm (ARF), Layyah, Pakistan, aimed to optimize the use of NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) fertilizers to increase sesame yield under dry conditions. Our research aimed to determine the most effective application rates of NPK fertilizer (34:24:12) kg/acre for sesame variety TH-6 in the region, consistent with the objectives of maximizing sesame yield and biomass accumulation. The experimental design RCBD included multiple treatments, with meticulous attention to plot sizes, replicates, and robust data collection and analysis methods. These measures ensure the reliability of our results and their potential applicability to similar agroclimatic conditions. The use of NPK fertilizer at the rate of (113:113:60) kg ha-1 in ARF gave promising results. A maximum grain yield of 765.3 kg ha-1 was observed in 2021, exceeding the yield of 738.6 kg ha-1 in 2022. Similarly, the use of NPK (113:113:60) kg ha-1 in a farmer's field resulted in a maximum grain yield of 828.6 kg ha-1 in 2021, as opposed to 702.6 kg ha-1 in 2022. These results highlight the potential of NPK fertilizer application combined with optimal field practices to increase sesame yield and its components under the challenging agro-climatic conditions of Karor, Layyah. The discussion interprets the results and emphasizes the importance of NPK fertilizers for sesame cultivation. Although our primary focus is not on climate discussions, the consistent methodology in both years, from sowing to harvesting, revealed significant differences in yield and growth parameters, leading to climate change being considered as a potential contributing factor. This study shows that the application of NPK fertilizer at the rate of (113:113:60) kg ha-1 can significantly increase sesame yield under adverse conditions.","PeriodicalId":512286,"journal":{"name":"Asian Plant Research Journal","volume":"26 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140734539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adjustment in planting and harvesting schedules in the context of changing climate and environmental factors is not only academically significant but also holds practical implications for agriculture, resource management, climate adaptation, economic development, and food security in Bangladesh. The present study was carried out to observe the influence of the transplanting and harvesting time on maximizing onion production. The experiment followed a RCB design with three replications, involving the cultivation of BARI Piaz-1 as the test crop with varying transplanting dates on November 1st, November 15th, and December 1st, and harvesting periods at 120, 130, and 140 days after planting (DAP). The study's results indicated that the choice of transplanting date and harvesting period had significantly influenced onion yield and yield attributes. Improved performances, including increase in plant height, number of leaves per plant, neck diameter, bulb diameter, bulb length, bulb weight, and overall yield were observed when onions were transplanted on November 15th and harvested after 130 days from planting. The highest yields, specifically 10.32 t/ha in 2018 and 11.33 /ha in 2019, were achieved under this conditions. Conversely, the lowest yields 6.28 t/ha in 2018 and 6.70 /ha in 2019 were obtained when onions were transplanted on December 1st and harvested after 120 days from planting. Additionaly, early planting (November 1st) exhibited a higher incidence of bolting, while late planting (December 1st) showed a higher disease incidence. Therefore, optimizing transplanting dates to align with November 15th and a 130-day harvesting period proved to be the most effective strategy for maximizing onion yield and other attributes, while late planting and early harvesting adversely affected these key attributes.","PeriodicalId":512286,"journal":{"name":"Asian Plant Research Journal","volume":"42 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140229011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(C. timorensis) against Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) in response to the global healthcare challenge of infectious diseases caused by Multidrug Resistance organisms. The study was motivated by the inappropriate use of existing antimicrobials and the insufficient discovery of new agents contributing to this crisis. Drawing inspiration from historical evidence in plant-based Ayurveda and traditional medicine, the study focused on C. timorensis, a plant known for its historical use in treating infectious diseases. \u0000Crude extracts from the leaves, bark, and stem of C. timorensis were prepared using the cold maceration process, and their antibacterial activity was assessed against the aforementioned bacterial strains. The cylinder plate method was employed to measure zones of inhibition at various concentrations (250 µg/ml, 500 µg/ml, 750 µg/ml, and 1000 µg/ml). Positive and negative controls included Gentamicin and distilled water respectively. The diameter of inhibition zones was measured after 24 hours of incubation. \u0000Results indicated positive antibacterial effects of all three extracts against E. coli (ATCC 25922) and P. aeruginosa (ATCC 27853). Notably, aqueous extraction from the stem exhibited the highest inhibitory zones against E. coli and P. aeruginosa. However, none of the concentrations of the extracts showed positive antibacterial effects against S. aureus (ATCC 25923). Statistical analysis confirmed the significance of the observed antibacterial activity against E. coli and P. aeruginosa. \u0000Dose-response study results highlighted the efficacy and potency of aqueous extractions from bark and leaves against Escherichia coli. In contrast, leaves and bark demonstrated the highest efficacy and potency, respectively against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In conclusion, the study scientifically validated the hypotheses formulated at the study's outset, utilizing evidence from plant-based Ayurveda and traditional medicine. The findings underscore the potential of C. timorensis as a source of antibacterial agents in the context of addressing multi-drug resistance-related infectious diseases.","PeriodicalId":512286,"journal":{"name":"Asian Plant Research Journal","volume":"68 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140433984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A pot experiment was conducted to find out the morpho-physiological changes in mango (Mangifera indica L.) seedlings in response to sea water induced salt stress at the Agroforestry and Environment research field of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with five replications, where four treatments, viz 4, 8, 12 dS m-1 salinity level (prepared from sea water), and the tap water (control) were imposed. The results indicated that plant height of mango shortened with the higher level of salinity and the declining magnitude was 28.44% over control at maximum salinity level. Number of leaves per plant of mango were reduced by 27.51% at 12 dS m-1 salinity level compared to that tap water, and the size of mango leaf was also reduced for salinity. Both shoot and root biomass of mango seedlings were significantly reduced due to salinity. The Salt tolerance index in mango was 56.76 only at 12 dS m-1. In case of physiological parameters, the lowest relative water content (RWC) was found in 12 dS m-1, while water saturation deficit (WSD) and water uptake capacity (WUC) were found to be the lowest in control for this plant. Water saturation deficit and water uptake capacity were increased with the increment of salinity level. Total chlorophyll and carotenoid content of mango were decreased by 66.27% and 61.07%, respectively, at the highest salinity level. Proline content of mango increased by 73.07% at 12 dS m-1 salt level in comparison to that of seawater devoid control plants. Considering the overall results, it can be concluded that, although mango seedlings were significantly affected by high salinity (12 dS m-1), but can survive up to moderate salinity (8 dS m-1) at sapling stage.","PeriodicalId":512286,"journal":{"name":"Asian Plant Research Journal","volume":"63 18","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140436721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Plant parts of Carica papaya Linn. were frequently used by ancient Sri Lankans to treat diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cancer, dengue fever, skin infections, renal disorders, and infections caused by bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. Dengue fever is the most prevalent and significant arthropod-borne viral disease in humans, and it is extensively spread throughout Sri Lanka. Carica papaya Linn. extracts have been used to treat dengue patients to recover from its complications, which include thrombocytopenia, hemolysis, and leukopenia. Studies reveal that the papaya leaf extract can neutralize plasma with the dengue virus, reduce platelet aggregation, and increase the production of the enzyme ALOX12, which promotes platelet production. Moreover, the extract also upregulates the platelet-activating factor receptor (PTAFR) gene and inhibits serine proteases NS2B and NS3 involved in dengue virus replication. In this review, we have discussed extensively the ethnomedicinal and pharmacological properties of Carica papaya while highlighting its remarkable potency in healing dengue.","PeriodicalId":512286,"journal":{"name":"Asian Plant Research Journal","volume":"8 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140445214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
