Our proposed model integrates the economic and migratory sectors in terms of endogenous variables in order to describe the evolution of continuous population distributions as a self-organising process.... The purpose...is to show that under strongly idealised conditions, a population consisting of different subpopulations with different economic activities will evolve into a differentiated population pattern. Each member of the subpopulations has the possibility to migrate between locations stimulated by rational economic reasons. The contribution remained widely unknown until Waldo Tobler and Alan Wilson edited it as an article in 1978. Not even then did it trigger any outburst of contributions. Meanwhile, in 1951, Skellam invented the same model for non-human populations. Unlike in economics, it was a great success in ecology. In a recent contribution, Skellam is named Father of Ecological Diffusion and more than 1000 articles on the subject are listed. There were many attempts at solving the equation, but none were quite successful. The Hotelling and Skellam models both assumed a given saturation population that nature could support. In 1985 the present author suggested that an explicit production function be introduced in the Hotelling model, as a man produces his own means of subsistence. Moreover, it was proposed that diffusion be related to spatial differences in per capita productivity, rather than to those in population density. The present contribution is a rejoinder. It is shown that the stationary solutions to the original Hotelling model are periodic and dip into negative populations, whereas this is avoided by the modified model suggested. It can thus be used to show how agglomerative structures may evolve.</p>","PeriodicalId":512272,"journal":{"name":"The Annals of Regional Science","volume":"23 3","pages":"171-86"},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"1989-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/BF01581933","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22012246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While an allocation rate is a valid and interesting measure, it has been misunderstood in several instances, leading to some empirical results that are difficult to interpret. In this paper, previous work on allocation rates is discussed, and 1 study is replicated for the 1975 to 1980 period. It is demonstrated that inclusion of origin variables in such models is theoretically incorrect and results in substantial biases in empirical work. Inclusion of ratios of destination-to-origin variables is valid only with a very narrow interpretation.</p>","PeriodicalId":512272,"journal":{"name":"The Annals of Regional Science","volume":"23 1","pages":"51-8"},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"1989-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/BF01624512","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22026766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Originally, that model was used to replicate the regional relative population and income growth of 9 divisions in the US for the period 1929-1979. Due to data limitations, only 1 component of the original model is replicated in the case of the People's Republic of China. Although the full regional dynamics model contains a system of 2 simultaneous differential equations, with a linear and a non-linear isocline respectively, here only the equation with the linear isocline is confirmed.
