Four developmental phases of oocyte development were identified viz. , oogonia proliferation and transformation into the primary oocyte, primary growth phase, secondary growth phase and maturation phase and these are similar to those described for other species. The reproductive development process begins in a very young ovary with the formation of oogonia, the cells originally derived from special primordial germ cells formed early in the embryonic development; their multiplication and differentiation are followed by the release of mature oocytes. Oocyte development stages observed in A. berda were chromatin nucleolus, early perinucleolar, late perinucleolar, lipid vesicle stage I oocyte, lipid vesicle stage II oocyte, primary yolk granule stage, secondary yolk granule stage, tertiary yolk granule stage, hydrated oocyte and atretic oocyte. The oocytes entered the maturation phase when they attained the maximum size of 459.6±71.83 µm. Histological examination of the mature ovaries showed the presence of all the different oocyte stages in the ovary of A. berda with an asynchronous mode of ovarian development shortly before spawning, indicating that the species is a multiple spawner.","PeriodicalId":51062,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84128752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pit, trench and core samples were collected from the four beaches, namely, Bharatpur, Ramnagar, Sitapur and Lakshmanpur; which exhibit distinguished anomalies in the sedimentological parameters, viz . skewness, kurtosis and standard deviation at various depths. The palaeontological study shows the simultaneous occurrence of characteristic benthic taxa of near-shore environment and upper part of continental slope along with the open ocean dweller planktic foraminifera- an intermixed foraminiferal assemblage is mainly due to the tsunami wave actions. The multiproxy approach reveals the occurrence of the tsunami and palaeo-tsunami deposits in Neil Island from 9 to 40 cm and below 60 cm depth, respectively.","PeriodicalId":51062,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences","volume":"16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81241592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aluterus monoceros forms an important fishery in the northern Indian Ocean; however, information on its population dynamics is sparse, as the species has not been explicitly studied. This study elucidates the population parameters from 1031 individuals landed in the multi-day trawl fishery along the western Bay of Bengal from January 2017 to December 2019. Total length ranged from 21.5 to 64.4 cm with a mean of 47.54 cm. Von Bertalanffy growth equation was L t = 67.67 [1 – e –0.32 (t + 0.0592) ]. The fishery was dominated by 3 and 4-year-old age classes and the estimated lifespan was 9.32 years. Recruitment was observed throughout the year and was bimodal, with the major pulse from October – February and the minor pulse from April – June producing 52.44 % and 36.24 %, respectively of the annual recruits. Natural mortality, fishing mortality and total mortality per year were 0.66, 0.55 and 1.21, respectively. Exploitation ratio was 0.45 and exploitation rate was 0.32. Though the species is currently underexploited, considering their lower capture sizes and their occurrence as by-catch in the trawl fishery, precautionary approach is suggested with management measures targeted at protecting their early life history stages.","PeriodicalId":51062,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences","volume":"39 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88950777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Fox Model (FM) and Logistic Model (LM) in A Stock Production Model Incorporates Covariates (ASPIC) estimated F = 0.062 – 0.132 and F = 0.059 – 0.126 from 2003 to 2018 with F/F MSY showing an increased inclination from 0.628 to 1.346 and 1.027 to 2.179, respectively. Estimated Starting Biomass (B) = 520800 – 263100 MT and B = 541000 – 277000 MT from population trajectory (Non-bootstrapped) sharply decreased to the ratio of biomass to B MSY (B/B MSY ) 2.810 – 1.420 and 2.075 – 1.063, respectively. Furthermore, the uncertainties reported in Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) (18210 – 15050 MT), F MSY (0.098 – 0.058) and B MSY (185300 – 260700 MT) from FM and LM was also estimated in ASPIC using 0.8 Initial Proportion (IP) of starting Maximum Catch (MC) that was 80 %. According to Target Reference Points (TRPs), CEDA and ASPIC (11000 – 18000 MT and 15000 – 18000 MT) range also indicate overexploitation of the Indian mackerel in the Arabian Sea of Pakistan. Estimated Predicted Yield (PY) of 28841 MT in 2003 and even Recent Catch (RC) of 19421 MT in 2018 is far away from harvested yield values of 31126 and 33658 MT and even MC of 38504 MT, pinpointing this research in a questionable and overexploitation state. Ideally, Fishing Effort (FE) should be reduced at the level of PY which is approximately 12000 fishing vessels (19421 MT) against the current engaged FE of about 19000 fishing vessels (33658 MT) in 2018 for the Indian mackerel fishery in Pakistan. In order to prevent this huge economic loss and to reduce the efforts of fisheries, it is suggested that strict and immediate measures should be followed by the policy makers and law enforcement organizations against the mesh size and illegal nets for this type of commercially important fishery.","PeriodicalId":51062,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences","volume":"76 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72840019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The population of the luminescent bacteria among the three fish species ranged from 2.95×10 5 to 6.68×10 6 cfu ml -1 and the corresponding percentage to the heterotrophic bacteria was between 0.01 and 0.34 %. The surface water had 2.00×10 5 cfu ml -1 with 0.20 % ratio to heterotrophic bacteria. The predominant luminescent bacteria observed were gram-negative short rod. Further study of these bacteria showed that growth and light emission occurred concurrently without the exhibition of lag phase; however, maximum luminescence was observed at mid-exponential growth phase suggesting quorum sensing phenomenon. The 16S rRNA gene sequence showed 92.81 % homology to Vibrio campbelli , Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio rotiferianus . This study highlights the occurrence of bioluminescent bacteria in skin of tropical coastal fish species in Nigerian coastal waters and also serves as a fundamental basis for future studies on the biotechnological application of this unique characteristics.","PeriodicalId":51062,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences","volume":"104 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76376741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
