Gelatin was isolated from Siboga squid ( Doryteuthiis sibogae ) skin through cold maturation process and its physico-chemical as well as structural properties viz . Water Holding Capacity (WHC), emulsifying capacity, emulsifying stability and viscosity were analyzed. The alkaline treatment of skin yielded 7.5 % gelatin powder. Extracted gelatin was characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, 1 H NMR, FT-IR and Raman analyses. Based on FT-IR and Raman fingerprints, peak located at 1664 cm -1 (C=O stretch Amide I band) could be inferred that secondary structure of proteins as well as coiled structure of gelatin. Topographic analysis by AFM showed presence of aggregates of the polymer. The results suggest that the Siboga squid gelatin is an alternative source of gelatin and its potential applicability at industrial scale.","PeriodicalId":51062,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82849617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the solvent extracts were determined using the Folin-Ciocalteau assay and aluminium chloride colorimetric assay with gallic acid and quercetin as standards, respectively. The anti-oxidant activity in phenolic and flavonoid content was also estimated by phosphomolybdenum method and was compared with gallic acid and quercetin standard. The quantitative analysis of flavonoid content reveals that methanolic extract of Sargassum sp . (9.56±0.38 mg QE/g during pre-monsoon and 9.44±0.48 mg QE/g during post-monsoon season); acetone extract of Gracilaria sp . (2.16±0.11 mg QE/g during pre-monsoon and 2.12±0.07 mg QE/g during post-monsoon season) and methanolic extract of Turbinaria sp. (4.11±0.12 mg QE/g during pre-monsoon and 4.22±0.15 mg QE/g during post-monsoon season) had higher concentration of flavonoid content. However, the quantitative analysis of phenolic content was found to be lower in all the seaweed extracts as compared to flavonoids. The anti-oxidant activity of a phenolic content and flavonoid content were also found to be correlated. The findings of the current study conclusively demonstrate the content of phenolic and flavonoid compounds significantly correlate with antioxidant activity.","PeriodicalId":51062,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75527877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four different groups of rats (6 rats in each group) were taken; where group 1 comprised of normal untreated rats, group 2 was injected with Isoproterenol (synthetic catecholamine), group 3 was considered as standard and hence, was injected with Isoproterenol + Simvastatin and group 4 was treated with Isoproterenol + Sargassum wightii ’s extract. Cardioprotective effects of Sargassum wightii was observed via the changes in the lipid profile, cardio marker enzymes and through histopathological studies. Rats treated with the extract of S . wightii showed a significant reduction in total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, serum triglycerides and increase in HDL- cholesterol level indicating an undamaged myocardial membrane. Likewise, low enzyme activity in Sargassum wightii treated rats clearly indicated the cardioprotective effects of Sargassum wightii. Histopathological studies were also done to observe the changes on the rats at the tissue level and no pathological changes were observed in Sargassum wightii treated rats. Hence, methanolic extract of Sargassum wightii is evidenced to possess cardioprotective activity against myocardial infarction.","PeriodicalId":51062,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79770816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The earlier studies focused on isolated metabolites from marine sources, composed to exhibit antibacterial, antiviral, and cytotoxic properties. The present study aims to evaluate the antibacterial property of the anemone-released metabolites. The crude and released mucoid metabolite obtained from the sea anemone Stichodactyla gigantea (Forskal, 1775) assayed against five human pathogens like Bacillus subtilis (MTCC 121), Listeria monocytogenes (MTCC 839), Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC839), Bacillus cereus (MTCC 443), and Salmonella enterica typhimurium (MTCC 1252). The assay exhibited positive activity against two pathogens, viz . B . subtilis (MTCC 121) and L. monocytogenes (MTCC 839). Based on the demonstrated activity, the released metabolites were purified using Open Column chromatography. The fractions collected were subjected to an antibacterial assay, which showed a high inhibition zone of 39 mm and 23 mm in diameter against B. subtilis and L. monocytogenes. Followingly, the characterization of purified fractions through GC-MS analysis confirmed the presence of 22 compounds. This study reveals the potential power of the released mucoid metabolites against antibiotic-resistive pathogens. Further studies are essential to elucidate the role of endosymbiont's contribution to mucoid production and their responsiveness towards tackling stressed conditions.","PeriodicalId":51062,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73758676","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The diversity of Haloarchaea from geographically less explored saline habitats has received less attention. In this study isolation and characterization of the biotechnological potential of novel haloarchaea strains from solar saltern, a hypersaline environment in Marakanam, Tamilnadu was carried out. The samples were collected during the pre-monsoon (July) and post-monsoon (January) season and ten different haloarchaea strains were isolated. UV-Vis spectroscopy analysis revealed the bacteriorhodopsin production by all the isolated strains. Further experiments were carried out to estimate the yield of bacteriorhodopsin and to assess their photocurrent activity and biosensor applications. The maximum yield of bacteriorhodopsin was 5.6 mg/L of cultured lysate. This study will contribute to a better understanding on effect of elicitors on bacteriorhodopsin producing different haloarchaea strains and growing knowledge on their biotechnological applications.","PeriodicalId":51062,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76229369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

FT-IR and XRD measurements were used to investigate the formation of the ternary beads. The percentage removal of metal ions was investigated in batch mode as a function of metal ion solution pH, initial metal ion concentration, adsorbent dosage, and contact time. The observed outcome shows that the best pH for removing both metal ions was reported to be 5.0. The incorporation of experimental data in theoretical modelling exhibits that the adsorption would be multilayer through pseudo-second order ( R 2 > 0.9) kinetics. The removal efficiency of ternary beads reveals that copper ions (C max = 203.69 mg/g) were removed better than nickel ions (C max = 194.05 mg/g).","PeriodicalId":51062,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73366974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this situation, a cost-effective and environmentally acceptable supply of biodiesel is required. When compared to other non-edible oil sources, algal oil is a significant emerging non-edible biodiesel source. The current study includes tests on pure diesel and its three algae oil blends. When the properties of the biodiesel made from the oils were tested, the results were within the acceptable limits. The engine test results show that, aside from NO X emissions, biodiesel blends emit very little carbon when compared to diesel. When biodiesel blends were used, the engine required more fuel. The results of the performance tests revealed that the biodiesel blends had better and more complete combustion. This research shows that biodiesel blends of up to 20 % can be a better substitute for pure diesel fuel and can be used in CI engines without modification.","PeriodicalId":51062,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81532176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
