User materials (UMAT) in finite element codes allow the researchers or engineers to apply their own material routines. Simple interfaces are specified to allow the utilization of material behaviors in software. In order to use these already existing and often validated models with Peridynamics, a UMAT interface is presented. It allows the simplified use of already existing material routines in the peridynamic framework Peridigm. The interface is based on the finite element (FE) software Abaqus UMAT definition and allows the integration of Fortran routines directly into Peridigm. In addition, the same material model implementations are applicable in finite element applications as well as peridynamic simulations. In the presentation, the interface is presented and various material models are utilized and compared between Peridynamics and FE methods. The effect of the horizon and nonlocal boundaries are analyzed and discussed.","PeriodicalId":510616,"journal":{"name":"PAMM","volume":"306 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140483476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To obtain an optimal design, it is essential to understand the design parameters and select the responsible factors that affect the blade efficiency. The aim of this work is to redesign a 3D micro‐HAWT to improve aerodynamic performance, through improving the distribution of chord length and twist angle along the blade. Performance analysis and flow visualization of the initial design and the optimal design were carried out using CFD analyzer. In the blade optimization design, eight significant input parameters were selected, five to characterize the chord length distribution and three to represent the twist angle along the blade. To maximize the efficiency, design points that are created by Design of Experiment (DoE) are evaluated through (Multi‐Objective‐Genetic Algorithm) MOGA method. The results showed a reduction on the separation effect area on the optimal blade surface compared to the initial one. The use of response surface optimization (RSO), when combined with CFD simulation, has proven beneficial in selecting the optimal HAWT design. Finally, the open source software (Qblade) was used to investigate and to compare the performance of the initial and optimum design. An efficiency enhancement of approximately 3.6% is achieved at tip speed ration TSR = 3.4.","PeriodicalId":510616,"journal":{"name":"PAMM","volume":"9 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140492249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to their heterogeneous surface properties, a mathematical description of the flow behavior along such surfaces is challenging. Circular textured surfaces are of particular importance. They are modeled as either axially traversed tubes or annuli consisting of no‐slip walls that are padded with rotationally symmetric finite‐shear regions. The latter represents a viscous interaction zone with a second fluid, assumed with layer thickness zero. Zimmermann and Schönecker provide analytical equations that describe the flow field and effective slip length for such geometries. They are applicable to Newtonian fluids of arbitrary viscosity ratio. This article emphasizes the development of principles and guidelines for the design of SHS and LIS to enhance sliding effects, based on these analytical models. The approach presented here facilitates an geometric evaluation of slippery circular surfaces, aiming to offer insights for the design. Through this research, the potential for significant energy savings and enhanced fluid transport performance can be realized, contributing to the development of more efficient fluid engineering systems.","PeriodicalId":510616,"journal":{"name":"PAMM","volume":" 642","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139617493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present work, an existing classification scheme for cleaning mechanisms is considered. Altough this framework is quite promising, the generation of training data constitutes a bottleneck, since the labeling was done manually and very roughly in order to supply the necessary amount of samples in a reasonable time. This, in turn, causes the scheme to be inaccurate when applied to more realistic data. The aim of the present work is to improve the preparation of training data preparation by introducing a semi‐automatic labeling procedure. The labeling procedure involves a new perspective on the data and the application of a gradient filter procedure. Furthermore, fully convolutional networks (FCNs) are employed to generalize different gradient filter. The labeling procedure is significantly faster and more consistent than manual labeling. Also, a proof of concept is provided showing that the FCNs are a suitable technique for the present classification task.","PeriodicalId":510616,"journal":{"name":"PAMM","volume":"105 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139444691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to these advantageous properties, PC is often used in industry for example in medical devices, automotive headlamps, sporting equipment, electronics, and a variety of other products. PC is often subjected to uniaxial and biaxial loading conditions. Therefore, reliable material models have to take into account the various resulting experimental effects. For those reasons, we investigate PC specimens under uniaxial and biaxial loading by using different stretch rates and loading scenarios. In addition to that, we propose methods for optical measurement of local stretches to obtain the approximated local true stress. In future work, the displacement fields and the resulting reaction forces will be used for parameter identification of constitutive equations.","PeriodicalId":510616,"journal":{"name":"PAMM","volume":"11 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139448742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the limited mechanical properties of aerogels restrict their widespread application. This study focuses on understanding the mechanical behavior of aggregated silica aerogels by investigating their microstructural connectivity and densification mechanisms under uniaxial compression. The interparticle connectivity is generated using the diffusion‐limited cluster–cluster aggregation (DLCA) algorithm, and the particle connections are modeled by beam elements that account for contact interaction. The mechanical response of representative volume elements (RVEs) is analyzed in both linear and nonlinear regimes while applying periodic boundary conditions. The model is correlated with experimental compression test data to validate the simulation results. With increasing compressive strain, load transitions between multiple backbone paths appear in the network structure. Thus, the simulation model provides insight into the compression process. Moreover, the simulation model enables the examination of the influence of various model parameters and facilitates the evaluation of the power–law relationship between the elasticity modulus and porosity of aerogels.","PeriodicalId":510616,"journal":{"name":"PAMM","volume":"57 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139384705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This iterative process can result in loss of element quality and degeneracy of the underlying mesh, which is particularly relevant for applications involving large deformations of some parts of the domain. To avoid remeshing, we model the mesh deformation using the method of mappings. We use an extension equation that maps a boundary control variable to a deformation field defined over the entire domain. By using the nonlinear extension operator proposed in our previous work, we increase the set of reachable shapes, allowing us to model large deformations. We discuss how the choice of parameters of the extension equations affects the mesh quality and we study the influence of the extension factor on the convergence properties of the iterative solvers.","PeriodicalId":510616,"journal":{"name":"PAMM","volume":" 16","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139138568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Standalone ODT results for low‐order statistics are compared with those from various eddy‐viscosity‐based subgrid‐scale models utilized in Large‐Eddy Simulations (LES) with OLBM. The predictive capabilities of both approaches are discussed by comparison with available reference Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) results. All turbulence models are able to predicted the mean temperature, but fail to fully capture fluctuations. While the OLBM aims to represent large‐scale structures, it misses some constitutional small‐scale fluctuations. By contrast, the reduced‐order ODT model captures small‐scale fluctuations in the vicinity of the wall, but cannot resolve the organized bulk flow. Here, the modeling capabilities of both OLBM and ODT as standalone tools are discussed. On this basis, a strategy for the incorporation of ODT as wall model in OLBM is suggested.","PeriodicalId":510616,"journal":{"name":"PAMM","volume":"35 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139158986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The behavior of CBS is simulated with a micropolar model, whereby the additional degree of freedom of the model describes the rotation of the sand grains. The model is used to generate a shear band under pressure for three different meshes, where the force‐displacement curves of the three meshes converge so that no mesh dependence occurs. Another requirement of the model is the consideration of asymmetric behavior for compression and tension. Due to the additional degree of freedom the implicit implementation of the micropolar continuum is very time‐consuming. Therefore, an explicit implementation is considered as an alternative possibility. This paper compares the advantages and disadvantages of both methods and the results for both calculations.","PeriodicalId":510616,"journal":{"name":"PAMM","volume":"90 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139161445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The TEHD convection is induced by an electric tension applied at the inner spherical shell whereas the outer shell is grounded. Hence, an electric central force field is present similar to terrestrial gravity in a planetary system. Spherical rotation mimics planetary rotation and is used to investigate the convective nature of the spherical gap. The results demonstrate four main convective regimes that depend on the strength of the electric tension and rotational forcing. The convective pattern formation is investigated by a Hammer‐Aitov projection, the radial and meridional velocity components to indicate convective or advective fluid motion related to the individual forcing. The heat transfer is characterised by the Nusselt number and showed a strong dependence on the forcing.","PeriodicalId":510616,"journal":{"name":"PAMM","volume":"246 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139165553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
