Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence rate and clinical symptom of extra‐articular diseases of the head and neck region that mimic genuine TMDs on 3‐tesla (3T) MRI.This study included 100 patients who were clinically diagnosed with TMDs and underwent TMJ MRI. We recorded lesions with abnormal signal intensities in the head and neck region using axial Dixon T2‐weighted imaging (T2WI). The clinical symptoms of the patients and pathology of extra‐articular diseases were determined based on medical records.Three patients (three males; mean age, 44.3 years) had lesions with abnormal high signal intensity in the head and neck region. All three patients presented with trismus as a clinical symptom. The locations of the lesions were as follows: the left medial and lateral pterygoid muscles, deep lobe of the right parotid gland, and body of the left mandible. Two patients had malignancies.Among the patients who visited the hospital, 3% had extra‐articular diseases and presented with genuine TMD symptom. Trismus may be a key clinical symptom indicating the presence of extra‐articular diseases and need for further clinical or imaging examinations.","PeriodicalId":510615,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":"60 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141802596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has investigated the association between chemotherapy‐induced myelosuppression and oral mucositis in Japan. In this study, we examined the relationship between chemotherapy‐induced leukopenia and the severity of oral mucositis.We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who received oral care interventions during cancer chemotherapy. Hematological values were obtained at the initiation of chemotherapy and on the proximal day of changes in the grade (Gr) of oral mucositis. The Gr of oral mucositis was assessed by dentists and dental hygienists using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (version 5.0).The data of 79 patients were analyzed during the study period. The incidence of oral mucositis was 7/79 (8.9%). The incidences of grades 1–4 were 4/79 (5.1%), 2/79 (2.5%), 0/79 (0%), and 1/79 (1.3%), respectively. Notably, the incidence of oral mucositis was significantly higher in patients with lower white blood cell and neutrophil counts (p < 0.01). Logistic regression analysis further revealed that patients with Gr 2 or higher leukopenia had a significantly higher risk of developing Grade 2 or higher oral mucositis (adjusted odds ratio: 5.2; 95% confidence interval: 1.60–17.0; p = 0.0062).Cancer chemotherapy induced‐oral mucositis may be at great risk in patients with Gr 2 or higher leukopenia.","PeriodicalId":510615,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":"121 45","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141665283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In total, 68 regimens were analyzed. The cumulative rate was determined by analyzing the timing and incidence of adverse events (AEs) with each regimen using a Kaplan–Meier curve.The treatment regimens administered included the following: induction C‐mab + paclitaxel + carboplatin (ICT‐PCE, n = 7), C‐mab + radiotherapy (RT) (n = 22), C‐mab + cisplatin + fluorouracil (n = 7), C‐mab + paclitaxel + carboplatin (n = 1), C‐mab + paclitaxel (n = 16), C‐mab maintenance (n = 11), and four other cases. The total number of doses administered was 895.This retrospective study investigated the effectiveness of treatment regimens containing C‐mab for oral cancer and adverse reactions to these regimens. C‐mab is a crucial component of oral cancer treatment when used in multidrug therapy. C‐mab containing regimens may result in direct or indirect AEs. Ongoing, rigorous monitoring is essential to mitigate these events. Partnering with other departments can help to limit their severity.","PeriodicalId":510615,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":" 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141366785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Real‐time PCR analysis was performed to identify HSV‐1 DNA from samples collected from the tongue surface via swab brushes. Concurrently, the detection of the 16S rRNA gene for periodontopathic bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Fusobacterium nucleatum was conducted.Among the participants, HSV‐1 DNA was detected in seven out of 45 (15.6%). No significant association was observed between HSV‐1 DNA and age, sex, body mass index, dependency status, or medical history. While the rate of HSV‐1 DNA positivity was higher in participants with suboptimal or poor oral hygiene (28.6%) compared with those with good oral hygiene (9.7%), the association was not statistically significant. Similarly, a reduction in oral wetness was noted in HSV‐1 DNA‐positive participants compared with their HSV‐1 DNA‐negative counterparts, but this was also not statistically significant. Interestingly, a significant association was found between the presence of HSV‐1 DNA and P. gingivalis (P = 0.01).It remains unclear whether the presence of oral HSV‐1 DNA is associated with poor oral hygiene and dry mouth in dependent older individuals. Co‐infection of HSV‐1 and P. gingivalis may contribute to the pathology of periodontitis.","PeriodicalId":510615,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":" 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141366701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tracheostomy was planned before cancer resection under general anesthesia, but oral intubation was not possible because of bleeding from tongue cancer. Thus, tracheostomy was performed under local anesthesia. He underwent a total glossectomy with segmental mandibulotomy, bilateral neck dissection with rectus abdominis muscle free flap reconstruction and postoperative radiotherapy. The pathological diagnosis was SCC (pT4bN0M0) with close margin. He underwent adjuvant radiotherapy of 66 Gy that targeted the primary tumor site and upper neck. The mass at the tracheostomy site from seeding was detected 4 months after surgery and treated with 60 Gy of radiotherapy. The patient was died from bleeding and airway obstruction about 7 months from detection of the seeding of tracheostomy site.Tracheostomy site seeding after temporally tracheostomy for oral cancer is very rare. The pathological mechanisms suspected the tumor seeding. The prognosis of the seeding of tracheostomy site was extremely poor. Possible method to prevent these includes awake tracheostomy without oral intubation for predicting bleeding from bulky tumor with trismus.","PeriodicalId":510615,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":"78 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141114016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients were classified into two groups: the closure group, which included patients who underwent partial tongue resection and primary suture, and the flap group, which included patients who underwent less than hemiglossectomy and reconstruction with a radial forearm free flap. Tongue perception was assessed using an electrical stimulator. Perceptual thresholds for the apex, margin, and dorsum of the tongue on the nontumor and tumor sides were evaluated. Tongue movement, tongue pressure, water drinking test, gummy jelly chewing strength, and bite strength were evaluated for oral and maxillofacial function. Each parameter was examined pre‐ and postoperatively (1, 3, 6, and 12 months).Patients with large tongue cancer had decreased bilateral tongue perception before surgery. Cutting flute geometry of the screw is considered to be a key factor; however, it has not been fully investigated. Therefore, the objective of our study is to evaluate the effect of cutting flute geometry on cortical bone microdamage.Human bone analogs, 1.0 mm thick, were prepared alongside custom‐made Ti6Al4V screws. These screws, with no flutes or modified flute geometries, came in lengths of 1.2, 2.4, and 5.0 mm, each with rake angles of 0° and 20°. Each screw was inserted into a bone sample and removed while measuring the maximum insertion torque (MIT) and the maximum removal torque (MRT). The bone microdamage was evaluated using cross‐sectional surface images of human bone analogs.MRT was significantly different in all pairwise comparisons among the three flute‐length groups in each rake angle, and the 5.0‐mm‐length groups demonstrated the lowest values. Similar tendencies were found in MIT and the bone microdamage, although significant differences were not observed in all the pairwise comparisons in the flute‐length groups in each rake angle. Interestingly, the two rake angle groups in each flute‐length exhibited significant differences in MIT and the bone microdamage, but not in MRT.From our investigation using custom‐made screws and human bone analog, cortical bone microdamage is affected by both flute geometries, whereas primary stability is affected by only the flute length.","PeriodicalId":510615,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":"11 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140976715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Autologous fibrin sealant (AFS), a platelet concentrate commonly used due to its adhesive nature and presence of growth factors, has shown good clinical results and improved healing with anti‐inflammatory properties. Hence, the current study aims to evaluate clinical outcomes and patient reported outcomes (PROs) with the adjunctive use of AFS along with Diode light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (LASER) in gingival depigmentation.This was a randomized double blinded split mouth clinical trial including 10 participants (six females and four males) in age range of 20 to 50 years with gingival hyperpigmentation (Dummet's index 2–3). Test (AFS) and control (no AFS [N‐AFS]) groups received Diode LASER depigmentation with and without adjunctive application of AFS, respectively, along with periodontal dressing. Clinical outcomes assessed were postoperative healing (Landry healing index) and repigmentation. PROs were patient comfort and aesthetics. Healing was assessed at 7 and 15 days and 1 month postoperatively. Repigmentation was assessed at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. Patient comfort was assessed immediately after surgery and 1 week postoperatively using visual analog scale (VAS). Aesthetics was assessed at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively using VAS.Better early postoperative healing was found at 1 (4.7 ± 0.516, p = 0.043) and 2 weeks (5.0 ± 0.0, p = 0.048) postoperatively in AFS group. No significant difference between the groups was observed in postoperative discomfort, that is, AFS‐1.4 ± 0.516 and N‐AFS‐1.7 ± 0.483 (p = 0.591), aesthetic satisfaction (AFS‐0.1 ± 0.316, N‐AFS‐0.3 ± 0.483, p = 0.168), and repigmentation (p = 0.00).The use of autologous fibrin sealant as adjunct to Diode LASER‐assisted depigmentation in the treatment of gingival pigmentation showed improved clinical outcomes in terms of postoperative healing.","PeriodicalId":510615,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":" 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140992619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
