Zum Ausgleich der zwischen geförderter Flüssigkeit und äußerem Luftdruck auftretenden Druckdifferenz dellt sich die den getränkten Docht einhüllende „Flüssigkeitshaut“ konkav ein, sodass der dadurch provozierte Krümmungsdruck eine ähnliche stützende Funktion übernimmt wie die Rohrwand beim klassischen Siphon. In der bodennahen Luft ist Ozon ein Schadstoff. Aber die Ozonschicht schützt das Leben an Land vor UV‐Strahlung, und ihre Zerstörung wurde zum ersten globalen Umweltproblem. Ozon hat aber noch viel mehr Eigenschaften und Funktionen. Entsprechend abwechslungsund lehrreich ist die Geschichte der Ozonschichtmessung, die vor 100 Jahren in Oxford begann.Foto: A.
