Here, we use an electromagnetic multipole expansion of both the scattered fields and the oscillating electric currents to reveal the multipolar excitations in a nanoparticle positioned close to another nanoparticle. The considered single-particle multipoles radically differ from multipoles excited in a pair of nanoparticles. Using the expansion, we reveal the multipole character of the electric currents and the contributions of the multipole moments to the scattering cross section of each particle, including the effect of their interaction. We find that light scattered by the particles plays the role of an inhomogeneous incident field for each of the particles, leading to hybridization of the originally independent orthogonal multipole resonances. For an incident plane wave polarized along the nanoparticle pair, the hybridization of the dipole and quadrupolar resonances gives rise to a significant narrowband resonance in the spectrum of the dipole scattering, which can be of interest for various applications, e.g., in surface-enhanced fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy. In general, this work shows that the multipole-multipole interaction between nanoparticles must be treated by taking into account also such hybridized multipole resonances.","PeriodicalId":508829,"journal":{"name":"New Journal of Physics","volume":"46 33","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139844878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such opinion polls do not resolve the effects of individual interactions but constitute a stochastic process. Voter models with zealots (individuals who do not change their opinions) can describe the mean-field dynamics in systems where no consensus is reached. We show that for large populations, the voter model with zealots is equivalent to the noisy voter model and it has a single characteristic time scale associated with the number of zealots in the population. We discuss which parameters are observable in real data by analysing time series of approval ratings of several political leaders that match the statistical behaviour of the voter model using the technique of the time-averaged mean squared displacement. The characteristic time scale of political opinions in societies is around 12 months, so it cannot be resolved by analysing election data, for which the resolution is several years. The effective population size in all fitted data sets is much smaller than the real population size, which indicates positive correlations of successive voter model steps. We also discuss the heterogeneity of voters as a cause of subdiffusion on long time scales, i.e., slow changes in the society.","PeriodicalId":508829,"journal":{"name":"New Journal of Physics","volume":"58 2‐3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139794107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, chiral elastic metamaterials attracted considerable scientific attention due to their distinctive properties such as acoustical activity and auxeticity. Such characteristics arise from additional degrees of freedom for tuning the embedded micro- and macro-rotations. Herein, we use 3D chiral mechanical metamaterials to realize the polarization state conversion functionnality. A structural design of a 3D chiral metamaterial capable to induce up to 90° rotation in the plane of polarization is presented. This feature enables a straightforward switch between the three polarization states existing within a solid material, namely, longitudinal state, shear horizontal state, and shear vertical state. Efficient conversion from longitudinal movement to transverse movement is demonstrated. A discrete mass-spring model is proposed for these 3D chiral structures that describes the conversion behaviors based on the corresponding elastic coefficients. The engineered chiral metamaterial polarization converter is a promising device for efficient momentum conservation conversions. This allows converting longitudinal waves into shear waves while preserving the initial stimulating wave characteristics.","PeriodicalId":508829,"journal":{"name":"New Journal of Physics","volume":"23 47","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139795803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To solve this problem, the ground-based experiment research on the influence of gravity jitter and gravitational tilt on the thermocapillary convection (TCC) transition behavior of non-axisymmetric liquid bridge has become an important issue in microgravity fluid management. Based on a mesoscale liquid bridge experimental platform which can realize gravitational tilt, the effect of gravitational tilt on TCC by using a high-speed camera equipped with a near-focus lens and a self-developed interface image recognition package. The results show that the spatio-temporal evolution of TCC by the influence of gravitational tilt is still divided into steady and oscillatory flow. In the stable TCC, the vortex core distortion of cellular flow caused by the imbalance left and right interface curvature invites cellular flow close to the free surface, and it shrinks to the intermediate height. As gravitational tilt increases, the transverse/longitudinal velocity peaks are significantly reduced, peak velocity has been reduced by 26-27%. Meanwhile, the longitudinal velocity gradient at the free interface increases significantly. Therefore, gravitational tilt plays an important role in improving the surface flow velocity. In the oscillatory TCC, the position of vortex core is closer to the free interface at the hot/cold corner as the periodic mutual occupation of the left and right cellular flows. The TCC is obviously inhibited due to the gravitational tilt. The critical temperature difference is increased by 25% and the onset of temperature oscillation at the hot corner is delayed by 20% compared with conventional gravity condition.","PeriodicalId":508829,"journal":{"name":"New Journal of Physics","volume":"61 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139870062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
