While photocatalytic technology is a promising approach, single catalysts, like UiO-66-NH2 and Bi2MoO6, suffer from rapid photogenerated carrier recombination and narrow light absorption. To address this, a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst, Bi2MoO6/UiO-66-NH2, was synthesized via a solvothermal method to enhance OTC degradation. Characterization results showed that the composite expanded visible-light absorption and improved electron-hole separation. Under simulated sunlight, the optimized composite (BUN80) achieved an OTC removal efficiency of 87.68% within 120 min under optimized conditions. The catalyst retained photocatalytic activity over five consecutive cycles, although a decrease in removal efficiency was observed. Radical trapping experiments indicated that h+ and •O2− were the main reactive species, and a proposed Z-scheme charge transfer pathway was suggested based on band structure analysis and photoelectrochemical results. LC-MS analysis identified 17 intermediate products, and ECOSAR-based toxicity prediction suggested a decreasing trend in aquatic toxicity during the degradation process. These findings indicate that Bi2MoO6/UiO-66-NH2 is a promising photocatalyst for OTC degradation in water.","PeriodicalId":508474,"journal":{"name":"Surfaces","volume":"9 2","pages":"49-49"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148305737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite its efficacy in controlling Actinidia brown spot disease in kiwifruit, excessive hexaconazole residues pose significant health risks due to its high toxicity. To address this challenge, a rapid analytical method for detecting hexaconazole residues in kiwifruit was developed using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The methodology employed silver colloid (C-AgNPs) as the active substrate and 1 mol/L NaCl as the aggregation agent, optimized through systematic testing, resulting in an optimal volume ratio of 400:225 between C-AgNPs and hexaconazole solution and a sequential mixing order of C-AgNPs + NaCl + Hexaconazole, followed by a 20 min incubation period. The characteristic Raman peak at 1584 cm−1 was identified as the spectral signature for hexaconazole quantification. Analytical validation revealed a linear detection range of 0.25–2.25 mg/L (R2 = 0.9870), precision with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.7%, and an average recovery rate of 88.40–105.50%, confirming the method’s robustness. This approach enables rapid, non-destructive analysis with minimal sample pretreatment, offering high sensitivity and stability. This method demonstrates great potential for detecting hexaconazole residues in agricultural products.","PeriodicalId":508474,"journal":{"name":"Surfaces","volume":"8 4","pages":"84-84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.mdpi.com/2571-9637/8/4/84/pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147914351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the existence of defects such as insufficient leveling and poor mechanical properties of the coating during the coating process limits the further expansion of its application fields. Therefore, for this article, powder coatings with high leveling performance were prepared by composite modification of nylon 12 (PA-12) resin with polyacrylates and ethylene-α-olefin copolymers (POE). The introduction of modified polyacrylates reduces the surface tension of nylon chains, enhancing melt flowability during curing and making the coating surface smooth. Furthermore, by introducing POE, the flexibility of the powder coating was improved, and its fracture elongation increased from 59% for pure PA-12 to a maximum of 234%. This study provides an effective method for the modification of nylon powder coatings and offers new insights into their use in high-performance coating applications.","PeriodicalId":508474,"journal":{"name":"Surfaces","volume":"8 4","pages":"80-80"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.mdpi.com/2571-9637/8/4/80/pdf?version=1763090703","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147917973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Herein, we investigated the Fe- and Cu-modified ZSM-5 catalysts using H2O2 as an oxidant for the selective oxidation of methane. It was found that the Fe/Cu ratio had a great impact on methanol yield. The Fe3Cu1 displayed the highest methanol yield of 29.7 mmol gcat−1 h−1 with a selectivity of 80.9% at 70 °C. Further analysis revealed that Fe3Cu1 showed the highest Fe3+ and Cu+ contents. The optimal dual valence cycle not only facilitates the efficient utilization of H2O2, promoting the activation of methane to •CH3 at the Fe site, but also suppresses the deep oxidation caused by the Fenton-like effect of Fe/H2O2, thus maintaining the high yield and high selectivity of methanol.","PeriodicalId":508474,"journal":{"name":"Surfaces","volume":"8 4","pages":"69-69"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.mdpi.com/2571-9637/8/4/69/pdf?version=1758624627","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147884808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on their unique lamellar structure and ultrathin nature, GO films are difficult to maintain in a free-standing form and typically require substrate support. Consequently, understanding their film formation behavior and mechanisms on substrates is of paramount importance. This work employs commonly used nonwoven fibrous membranes as substrates and guided by the coffee-ring theory, systematically investigates the film formation behaviors, film morphology, and underlying mechanisms of GO films on fibrous membranes with varying wettability. Fibrous membranes with different wetting properties—hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and superhydrophobic—were prepared via electrospinning and initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) surface modification techniques. The spreading behaviors, deposition dynamics, capillary effects, and evaporation-induced film formation mechanisms of GO suspensions on these substrates were thoroughly examined. The results showed that GO formed belt-like, ring-like, and circular patterns on the three fibrous membranes, respectively. GO films encapsulated more than the upper half, approximately the upper half, and the top portion of fibers, respectively. Pronounced wrinkling of GO films was observed except for those on the hydrophilic fibrous membrane. This work demonstrates that tuning the wettability of fibrous substrates enables precise control over GO film morphology, including fiber encapsulation, wrinkling, and coverage area. Furthermore, it deepens the understanding of the interactions between 1D nanofibers and 2D GO sheets at low-dimensional scales, laying a foundational basis for the optimized design of membrane engineering.","PeriodicalId":508474,"journal":{"name":"Surfaces","volume":"8 2","pages":"39-39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.mdpi.com/2571-9637/8/2/39/pdf?version=1750252904","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147909438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, challenges related to enzyme immobilization and spatial control often limit its practical applications. In this work, we report a Marangoni flow-driven strategy to fabricate a biomimetic jellyfish-like hydrogel with tunable tentacle-like structures. The formation process occurs entirely in an aqueous system without organic solvents or post-treatment, enabling the construction of ultra-thin, free-standing hydrogels through spontaneous interfacial self-assembly. The resulting structure exhibits high surface-area geometry and excellent biocompatibility, providing a versatile platform for localized enzyme loading. This method offers a simple and scalable route for engineering soft materials with complex morphologies, and expands the design space for bioinspired hydrogel systems.","PeriodicalId":508474,"journal":{"name":"Surfaces","volume":"8 2","pages":"28-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.mdpi.com/2571-9637/8/2/28/pdf?version=1745315538","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147920472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, poly(propylene carbonate phthalate) (PPC-P) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) blends with different ratios were designed and prepared, marked as PPC-P/PBAT. Chain extenders were introduced into the blends, and the mechanical properties, thermal properties, and barrier properties of the composites were studied. The 75PPC-P/PBAT with 2% extenders represent the best performance. The addition of the chain extender has significantly improved the thermal stability and tensile elongation of PPC-P/PBAT. On this basis, the PPC-P/PBAT composite film was coated with PVA and borax using the dipping and pulling method. The oxygen barrier properties have been further improved for the composite film with a coating layer. Considering the characteristics of biodegradability and a high-barrier property, the 75PPC-P/PBAT/2MDI@Gly blend coated with 2 wt% PVA and 3 wt% borax exhibits potential as a superior food/pharmaceutical plastic packaging material with excellent tensile and barrier properties.","PeriodicalId":508474,"journal":{"name":"Surfaces","volume":"7 3","pages":"517-528"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.mdpi.com/2571-9637/7/3/34/pdf?version=1722476525","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147911949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The natural phenomenon-inspired morphology, which combined different degrees of wettability presented on the surface, documented their advantage in water harvesting compared to untreated surfaces. These superiorities might be explained by the appropriate combination of nucleation and water-driven ability facilitated by the superhydrophobic surrounding area. The uniform condensed droplets are effectively agglomerated to achieve the critical size. The best combination was found on a superhydrophobic-hydrophilic hybrid sample that improved water collection efficiency by up to 50% compared to bare Al. Condensation performance also illustrated an interesting tendency that revealed the great contribution of wettability on hydrophilic dots and the water-driven ability of the high-hydrophobicity area. The results were supported by a theoretical model which predicts the critical volume of a single droplet before it has departed from the surface. The findings reveal a good level of agreement between theory and real-time measurement, demonstrating the potential of combinations of hybrid samples to induce water collection efficiency.","PeriodicalId":508474,"journal":{"name":"Surfaces","volume":"51 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141808739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since carbon nanoparticles (CPs) are known for their excellent absorbability, this study explored preparing CPs via a facilitated ball-milling protocol. Four CP products were prepared with the friction enhancer being variated, typically 0-CPs, 2.5-CPs, 5-CPs, and 10-CPs. The four sorbents were characterized using TEM, EDX, XRD, BET, and FTIR methods. The 0-CPs, 2.5-CPs, 5-CPs, and 10-CPs possessed a BET surface area of 113, 139, 105, and 98.5 m2 g−1, respectively, and showed a sorption capacity of 55.6, 147.0, 65.8, and 24.6 mg g−1 when tested with chlorohexidine (CH). Therefore, the 2.5-CPs were selected as the best sorbents among the prepared nanomaterials and employed for further sorption investigations. The CH sorption on the 2.5-CPs followed the pseudo-second-order, and the liquid–film diffusion controlled the CH sorption onto the 2.5-CPs. The Langmuir isotherm model was followed, and the Dubinin–Radushkevich energy was 3.0 kJ mole−1, indicating a physisorption process. The thermodynamic outputs suggested that CH sorption by 2.5-CPs was favorable. Furthermore, the 2.5-CPs sorbent was tested for treating water samples contaminated with 20 mg L−1 of ciprofloxacin, dextromethorphan, guaifenesin, metronidazole, ibuprofen, chlorzoxazone, chlorpheniramine malate paracetamol, and hydro-chlorothiazide. The 2.5-CPs showed an average removal efficiency of 94.1% with a removal range of 92.1% to 98.3% and a 2.21 standard deviation value.","PeriodicalId":508474,"journal":{"name":"Surfaces","volume":" 28","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141823970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
