Bordy","doi":"10.14241/asgp.2020.07","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14241/asgp.2020.07","url":null,"abstract":"A new ichnosite in southwest Lesotho (Upper Moyeni; Quthing District) is located within the uppermost part of the highly fossiliferous Elliot Formation, ~35 m below the conformably overlying Clarens Formation and ~65 m above the world-renowned Lower Moyeni ichnosite. While the Lower Moyeni site preserves diverse Early Jurassic ichnofossils, the ichnites at the Upper Moyeni comprise one vertebrate burrow and ~50 tridactyl tracks with footprint lengths between 15 and 51 cm. Many of the tracks preserve digital pad impressions, claw marks and displacement rims, all related to substrate conditions. The morphometric parameters of the Upper Moyeni tracks are consistent with Grallator , Eubrontes and Kayentapus . Several larger tracks with footprint lengths > 40 cm are Kayentapus -like and Eubrontes -like, and are comparable to previously described very large theropods tracks with lengths > 50 cm from the uppermost Elliot and Clarens formations. On the basis of sedimentological and ichnological evidence, the Upper Moyeni ichnofossils were formed in a palaeolandscape with small rivers and shallow lakes by burrowing tetrapods and a variety of bipedal dinosaurs (theropods), some of which were up to 7–8 m in body length. Konečný","doi":"10.14241/asgp.2020.05","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14241/asgp.2020.05","url":null,"abstract":"The Kamieniec Ząbkowicki Metamorphic Belt (KZMB) is a narrow zone of mainly mica schists, subordinate acid metavolcanics and scarce eclogites, sandwiched between Brunovistulia and the northern tip of the Tepla-Barrandia microplates. Locally occurring high-pressure relics indicate subduction of the metasedimentary succession of the KZMB, the origin and provenance of which remain unclear. Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) investigations of detrital zircons show that the metapelites represent an Ediacaran-Cambrian sedimentary basin, with a maximum depositional age of 561±9 Ma. This basin was filled with detritus from a source or sources, composed of rocks containing zircons that are mainly Cryogenian-Ediacaran and Palaeoproterozoic in age. No younger component was found in the zircon population studied. The isotopic U-Pb LA-ICP-MS and chemical U-Th-total Pb electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) monazite geochronology data indicate an important regional tectono-metamorphic event at ca. 330 Ma. The dorsal plate of Psarkosteus is constricted in its anterior part and the postorbital plate is long and narrow. Both features, along with the morphology and variety of tubercles, distinguish it from other representatives of the group. Most distinctive are big, teardrop-shaped tubercles, each with a flat or slightly concave surface and with its tip directed posteriorly, and a crenulated base, located along the branchial plates. Jansen","doi":"10.14241/2020.03","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14241/2020.03","url":null,"abstract":"The paper includes a taxonomic revision of four externally similar Middle Devonian rhynchonellide species from northwestern Africa (Maider, Tindouf Syncline) and Central Europe (Eifel, Bergisches Land, Holy Cross Mts.), considered in recent papers as representatives of Kransia Westbroek, 1967 or Nalivkinaria Rzhonsnitskaya, 1968. All four possess a septalium and a multilamellate cardinal process, the assignment to Nalivkinaria , having a bifid cardinal process, is therefore clearly inappropriate. Lebanzuella ? issoumourensis (Drot, 1971) is present in the Givetian of Africa; two subspecies, L. ? issoumourensis issoumourensis from Jbel Issoumour and L. ? issoumourensis smarensis ssp. nov. from Western Sahara, are distinguished by their biometric characteristics. The other two species are included in Kransia ( Fatimaerhynchia ) subgen. nov. differing from Kransia ( K. ) in the presence of a septalium; the occurrence of such a variable structure is considered to be justification for distinction at the subgenus level. Kransia ( Fatimaerhynchia ) goldfussii (Schnur, 1853) is an Eifelian species. Kransia ( Fatimaerhynchia ?) aff. goldfussii from the Givetian of Bilveringsen is a separate species (larger, more transverse, more strongly ornamented), which is not described because of insufficient material. Kransia ( Fatimaerhynchia ) signata (Schnur, 1851) is present in the Middle Devonian of Jbel Issoumour, the middle Eifelian of the Eifel and the (upper?) The chronostratigraphic positions of particular formations of the Buntsandstein are discussed as well. The magnetic polarity pattern obtained from the Brześc Kujawski IG-1 borehole matches the pattern obtained earlier in other boreholes from the Polish part of the Central European Basin. Although magnetostratigraphy and palynological evidence undoubtedly indicates that the Induan/Olenekian boundary in the Polish part of the CEB is located in the lower part of the Pomerania Formation, the placement of the Olenekian/Anisian boundary within the sedimentary sequences of the Central European Basin remains problematic. {"title":"Trace fossils from the Mississippian of the Piaskowa Góra section (the Intra-Sudetic Basin, SW Poland)","authors":"Jolanta Muszer","doi":"10.14241/asgp.2020.06","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14241/asgp.2020.06","url":null,"abstract":"Eight ichnotaxa and enigmatic tubular forms were discovered and described for the first time from clastic deposits (the Culm facies) of the uppermost part of the Szczawno Formation (upper Mississippian) from in the Piaskowa Góra section in the northern part of the Intra-Sudetic Basin near Wałbrzych. The trace fossils are represented mostly by pascichnia and less numerous domichnia, fodinichnia and repichnia. Psammichnites plummeri and numerous Phycosiphon isp. are the most common ichnotaxa. They are accompanied by Archaeonassa fossulata, Beaconites cf. capronus, Curvolithus multiplex, Dictyodora liebeana, Palaeophycus isp., and Planolites isp. D. liebeana is described for the first time from the lower Serpukhovian. Most components of the ichnoassemblage are typical of the Cruziana ichnofacies, but the co-occurrence of Dictyodora and Phycosiphon could indicate a transition to deeper environmental settings (the Zoophycos ichnofacies). The lithological features as well as the accompanying trace fossils, wrinkle structures and floral remains of Archaeocalamites indicate rapid sedimentation, alternating with more tranquil periods of sedimentation, in an intermediate environment between the lower offshore (the distal Cruziana ichnofacies) and the fan-delta slope (below the wave base, the Zoophycos ichnofacies). This is in part due to an unclear ichnotaxonomy of the earliest tracks attributed to reptiles that has resulted in unreliable trackmaker attributions. We comprehensively revise the earliest supposed reptile ichnotaxon, Notalacerta missouriensis, based on a neotype and a selection of well-preserved material from the type locality and other sites. A synapomorphy-based track-trackmaker attribution suggests eureptiles and, more specifically, ́protorothyridids ́ such as Paleothyris as the most probable trackmakers. A revision of the entire PennsylvanianCisuralian record of this ichnotaxon unveils an unexpected abundance and a wide palaeogeographical distribution. The earliest unequivocal occurrence of Notalacerta is in the middle Bashkirian (early Langsettian) at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Joggins Fossil Cliffs (Joggins, Nova Scotia, Canada). This occurrence also coincides with the earliest occurrence of reptile body fossils (Hylonomus lyelli), which are found at the same site. Notalacerta is abundant and widely distributed during the Bashkirian, mostly in sediments deposited in tidal palaeoenvironments, and less common in the Moscovian and Kasimovian. Studies of lava caves outside of Earth currently are a topic of great interest, as they may be potential locations for some life forms and future bases in space exploration.
