Brecciation is common in the core samples of some wells. This paper describes the brecciation in the phylloid algal limestones and discusses its origin. In the core samples, brecciated dark areas, consisting of irregularly shaped fragments, are seen together with internal sediment-filled pores, characterized by light gray coloured areas. Detailed examination of the core samples reveals that the brecciated dark areas correspond to open space areas between phylloid algal colonies, on the basis of comparison with the well-preserved primary rock texture in the cores. Brecciation is mainly due to the selective dissolution of phylloid algae that produced phylloid algal moulds, later filled by sandy internal sediments under subaerial conditions. The subsequent compaction of the limestone caused the rock to break up and formed a breccia in situ . The sandy internal sediment prevented the moulds from collapse as well as breccia formation in the pore-filling area, owing to its loose character. Overall, the brecciation process, including the dissolution of phylloid algae and breakage of the rocks, significantly improved the reservoir quality, whereas the internal sediment reduced the reservoir quality, for it reduced the porosity.","PeriodicalId":50776,"journal":{"name":"Annales Societatis Geologorum Poloniae","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135261847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Geochemical characterization and palaeoenvironmental implications of lipids in Neogene lignites and lignitic shales in NW Poland","authors":"Franciszek Czechowski, Marzena Polowczyk, Bernd Simoneit, Cezary Grelowski, Marek Hojniak","doi":"10.14241/asgp.2023.19","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14241/asgp.2023.19","url":null,"abstract":": The lipophilic biomarker distributions in lipids of Neogene lignites and lignitic shales in western Pomerania and the midlands of Poland are presented. Twenty-six lignite samples and seven lignitic shales were obtained from twenty-four boreholes. Their extracts were separated, using thin-layer chromatography, and the saturate and aromatic fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The molecular compositions of n -alkanes, isoprenoids, n -alkylcyclohexanes, n -alkylbenzenes, tri-and tetracyclic diterpenoids, penta-cyclic triterpenoids, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with up to five rings, were determined. The samples displayed n -alkane distributions in the range of C 14 –C 35 and high odd-over-even carbon number pre-dominances (CPI (25–33) from 2.9 to 7.9). Diterpanes consisted primarily of phyllocladane, abietane, isopimarane, labdane, and kaurane structures, although their abundances varied among the samples. Hopanes exhibited the biological and geochemical characteristics of low-maturity organic matter. Minor oleanane triterpenoids from angiosperms were also found. A few samples displayed evidence of biodegradation on the basis of the advanced isomerization of αβ-hopanes and the presence of short-chained n -alkanes, n -alkylcyclohexanes, and n -alkylben- zenes. A more mature stage of the above biomarkers also may have resulted in part from the oxidation of organic matter. The lignite source materials were derived from conifer and angiosperm flora as well as microbial remnants. The contribution from marine phytoplankton was excluded on the basis of the lack of C 27 steroids. PAHs were predominantly perylene or phenanthrene, with minor other analogues. Thus, the data support progressive lacustrine/ lagoonal sedimentation in the palaeoenvironmental mires.","PeriodicalId":50776,"journal":{"name":"Annales Societatis Geologorum Poloniae","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135311680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The subject of the present study is the geo - chemistry of germanium (Ge), which occurs in concentrations ranging from 2.7 to 6.3 µg/L in the waters studied. Interpretation of a set of 46 chemical analyses identified relationships between germanium and other elements in thermal waters from individual intakes. In the old thermal waters of Cieplice and Karpniki of deep circulation, germanium is derived from silicates and its concentration is controlled by the solubility of Ge-bearing quartz with an average Ge content of 1.5 µg/g. The source of germanium in the deep old thermal water at Staniszów is mainly sulphides, most likely arsenopyrite, but the secondary contribution of Ge from silicates (biotites, amphiboles) should not be ignored. The mineral phase, responsible for controlling Ge activity in this water, cannot yet be iden - tified. The shallow thermal waters at Cieplice, which are a mixture of old thermal waters and modern waters, differ from the deep waters. Germanium in shallow waters probably is derived from silicates, but ow - ing to mixing, there are no chemical equilibrium conditions; the concentration of Ge is determined by the dynamic equilibrium of the mixed water components. The modern water of intake no. 2 (Cieplice) differs from other shallow waters and also shows similarities to the Staniszów water. The germanium in the no. 2 water probably comes mainly from ferromagnesian minerals (biotite, amphiboles), although the influence of sulphides cannot be excluded. The relationships of germanium to other elements, including the Ge/Si ratio, appear to be effective indicators of hydrogeochemical conditions. Thermal waters from the different locations show both similarities and differences in chemical composition, especially of minor and trace components. At the present, still weak stage of recognition, the Jelenia Góra geothermal system can be treated as an area of occurrence of local systems responsible for the quantity and quality of thermal waters in individual intakes.","PeriodicalId":50776,"journal":{"name":"Annales Societatis Geologorum Poloniae","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66915709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The assemblage comprises six brachiopod taxa, belonging to five genera, Novocrania Lee and Brunton, Thecidellina Thomson, Argyrotheca Dall, Joania Álvarez, Brunton and Long, and Platidia Costa. Two species are described as new, Thecidellina persica sp. nov. and Argyrotheca ramshehensis sp. nov. The discovery of Thecidellina in Iran is the first confirmed occurrence of this genus in Oligocene deposits, filling the gap between known Eocene and Miocene occurrences. At the species level, the brachiopods investigated here show no affinity to those from the Lower Miocene Qom Formation.","PeriodicalId":50776,"journal":{"name":"Annales Societatis Geologorum Poloniae","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135104791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
